 hi

i  have  just  started  to  keep  marine  tank  for  the  past  2  and  half  months.  the  tank  size  is  36lx18hx15w.  i  am  planning  to  move  to  a  bigger  tank  of  size  L48x  H24Xw15,  it  is  a  imported  moulded  tank  from  minjiang  which  has  a  top  filter  built  in

i  wish  to  know  can  i  just  buy  a  cannister  external  filter  than  going  for  a  sump.

 please  advice

 thnaks  and  regards

External  filter  for  a  marine  is  not  that  useful.  At  the  most,  you  can  use  it  with  active  carbon  and  for  chemical  and  mechanical   filteraton.
For  biological  filteration  you  would  require  Live  rocks  and  please  dont  skimp  on  the  skimmer.

IF  you  have  a  skimmer,  carbon  is  not  mandatory  and  the  mechanical  filteration  can  be  handled  by  the  top  filter.  In  such  a  situation,  I  would  say,  the  canister  would  be  waste  of  money.

All  the  best  for  your  new  venture

 HI  manu.

To  add  to  the  above,  would  suggest  to  increase  the  width  to  at  least  21".
IF  you  want  to  avoid  a  sump,  you  can  make  use  of  Hang-on  skimmers/equipments  too.

A  sump  and  a  canister  filter  cannot  be  replaced  for  each  other  and  have  their  individual  uses  and  advantages.

Would  suggest  you  do  a  lot  of  reading  before  ordering/makink  the  new  tank.
Start  with  tank  size,  specificatons  and  then  only  consider  the  filteration  required  for  the  volume  of  water  therein.  Even  an  inch  of  difference  in  size  could  make  considerable  difference  in  water  volume.

 thanks  for  the  reply

there  is  already  18  to  20  kgs  of  live  rock  in  the  existing  tank.  the  bigger  tank  i  mentioned  was  gifted  to  me  by  my  friend,  just  shifting  the  tamarine  to  that,  so  would  take  your  adivce  on  not  buying  on  the  external  filter

 thanks  a  tone  once  again

 regards
 manu

Well  if  you  are  shifting  to  the  bigger  tank,  make  use  of  the  old  tank  as  a  sump,  rather  than  getting  an  external  canister.  Any  longterm  marine  hobbyist  will  vouch  on  the  success  they  have  had  with  sumps  rather  than  Canisters.  Personally  having  so  many  friends  and  have  done  atleast  over  300  setups  haven't  seen  any  long  term  successfully  running  marine  tank  with  a  canister  alone.  You  need  to  have  the  right  mix  of  live  rock  and  other  things  to  keep  the  system  as  close  as  possible  and  as  precise  as  possible.
