Nice  start  Aroop,  try  to  even  out  the  front  substrate.  Any  reason  why  you  added  river  gravel  on  top  of  the  contra  soil.  Had  you  not  topped  it  with  river  gravel  the  tank  would  have  had  a  much  nicer  look.

Remove  all  those  sword  plants  behind  and  add  some  thin,  fine  leaved  stem  plants  of  your  choice.  For  a  tank  this  size  its  better  to  use  fine  leaved  plants.

 Good  luck!

Finally  one  of  the  ultimate  gurus  of  Planted  tanks  has  responded...  Very Happy  ...Well  the  only  reason  why  I  added  those  sword  plants  was  it  would  provide  a  place  for  the  angels  to  lay  their  eggs  just  in  case  I  am  lucky  enough  to  get  them  to  breed...To  be  frank  they  do  seem  to  affect  the  aesthetic  look  of  the  tank...What  would  you  propose  an  alternative  or  a  good  choice  of  background  plants...Shall  I  go  for  cabomba  red  ?...I  need  to  do  something  about  the  internal  filter  too  I  guess  na  Prem...And  Prem  where  can  I  get  a  Philips  Trulite  2  feet  in  size  in  Chennai?...

Many  on  the  forum  are  going  to  get  offended  if  you  make  such  statements.  I  am  still  learning  and  thats  what  keeps  this  hobby  so  addictive.

The  tank  is  too  small  for  angels,  the  ideal  ones  should  be  tetras,  neons  will  be  ideal  for  small  tanks.

Go  for  Rottala  red,  Rottala  walachii,Mayca  etc.  I  have  grown  these  plants  without  Co2  successfully.  Cabomba  will  grow  very  big  so  not  a  good  choice.  Well  its  been  a  long  time  since  i  went  out  searchin  for  lights,  Parry  corner  should  be  a  good  place.

Oopsi   Shocked  ...No  offence  meant  to  all  gurus  at  IAH...Advice  is  always  welcome  from  all...Thats  the  only  way  I  can  learn  from  my  mistakes...

Will  go  for  the  tetras  if  thats  the  case...My  LFS  has  a  stock  of  neon  tetras  with  him  currently...Hes  also  placed  orders  for  Lemon,  Penguin,  Rummy  Nose  and  cardinal  tetras...If  I  get  them  at  a  price  I  will  go  for  tetras...I  have  even  asked  for  feather  fin  rainbows  because  I  find  them  real  adorable....

Will  head  for  Parrys  for  the  lighting  as  most  electrical  shops  seem  to  point  to  Parrys  when  they  dont  have  stock....

 Hi  Guys,

Had  a  few  queries  regarding  maintaining  a  planted  tank...How  do  I  do  a  WC  in  a  planted  tank...Do  I  just  siphon  out  20  -  30  %  of  the  water  from  the  tank  and  replace  it  with  fresh  water?...Usually  in  my  old  tanks  I  used  to  siphon  out  all  the  poop  and  stuff....So  how  do  I  go  about  the  same  in  a  planted  setup...

Also  how  long  do  I  need  to  leave  the  lights  on  in  the  tank...Is  there  a  specific  time  period  for  which  the  lights  should  be  switched  on?...I  usually  go  to  bed  pretty  late...So  the  lights  are  usually  on  from  morning...  I  am  not  pretty  sure  if  I  am  doing  the  right  thing  by  leaving  the  lights  on  from  8:00  AM  to  close  to  midnight...

Its  the  same  here.  Just  wipe  the  glass  off  any  algae  or  dirt.  Just  take  care  not  to  disturb  the  substrate,  so  that  you  don't  uproot  the  plants.

Maintain  a  photo  period  of  about  6-8  hours  initially  then  increase  gradually  to  10  hrs.  This  is  to  allow  your  plants  to  set  in  and  to  prevent  outbreak  of  algae  due  to  excess  lighting.

Follow  the  instructions  on  the  bottle...  But  go  for  much  lesser  than  what  is  prescribed  looking  into  facts  like  planting  density  etc.  Gradually  increase  it  to  the  recommended  level,  again  watch  out  for  algae  issues.  Observation  and  patience  is  the  key  here.  Smile

its  a  nice  looking  tank  for  a  first  timer  :)

hey,  you  could  get  the  "Phillips  Bonsai"  light  at  any  electric  shop....thats  a  dual  T5  tube  setup  -  36Watts  and  <2  feet  in  length  Smile  should  cost  about  500  bucks  for  the  whole  setup  including  the  holder  choke  and  lights....  1  of  these  should  do  for  you.....

And  about  the  plant  liquid  fertilizer,  i  guess  its  too  soon  to  add  some.  i  think  we  are  not  supposed  to  add  any  liquid  fertilizer  (there  is  no  need)  for  the  first  few  months..maybe  4-6.......WAIT  for  the  comments  from  the  experts  though..

keep  washing  the  glass  and  do  20%  water  change  daily.....that  helps  to  keep  away  the  algae......  smaller  tanks  are  more  difficult  to  maintain....so  GOOD  LUCK  Smile

KaT  can  you  give  me  a  precise  location  of  where  I  can  get  a  Philips  Bonsai?...  The  electrical  shops  around  my  area  give  me  wierd  looks  and  expressions  when  I  talk  about  these  things...For  them  its  always  their  way  or  the  highway...So  I  gave  up  looking  for  lights...Settled  for  the  2  Lifemax...Since  you  gave  a  suitable  option  I  will  give  it  a  try  provided  you  give  me  directions  to  the  place..Else  I  head  to  Parrys  as  Prem  suggested....

Keeping  my  fingers  crossed  about  the  algae  outbreak...Thats  the  last  thing  I  want  right  now...I  have  2  CAE...and  3  juvenile  SAE's  in  the  tank  for  now...But  still  I  dont  want  to  take  my  chances...Will  wait  for  expert  opinion  about  the  ferts....Angel_lovers  given  some  nice  advice  too...

Also  could  any  one  tell  me  why  the  base  of  a  few  of  my  plants  are  mostly  in  a  withered  state...What  I  meant  to  say  was  the  leaves  of  the  plant  would  be  all  dark  and  a  withered  state  closer  to  the  area  where  it  is  attached  to  the  soil...While  as  for  the  tips  its  always  green  and  healthy?....Is  this  anything  to  do  with  lighting  ?...Or  less  ferts?...

 Experts  need  your  help....

Aroop  it  is  normal  for  this  to  happen  during  the  acclimatization  stage,  unless  it  is  too  severe  and  the  stem  itself  is  rotting.
