Another  month  and  another  trip.  This  time  the  place  was  the  Amirthi  Reserve.  Its  located  about  30  Kms  from  Vellore.  It  is  more  of  a  tourist  spot  for  the  locals  than  it  is  for  outstation  tourists.

We  left  at  around  3  AM  as  usual  after  very  little  sleep  and  lotsa  everything  else.

L-R  :  Prasoon  Rajeshwaran  Shankar  Bala  (behind  Shankar)  Me  and  Sai

Breakfast  was  in  the  car  and  we  reached  Vellore  at  around  6:30.  The  first  spot  was  a  river  that  was  running  outta  the  reserve.

 The  Spot

Not  Really  Wild  Is  It  ?????????

 Collecting

There  was  nothing  really  exciting  here.  L.thermalis  R.daniconius  a  Puntius  SP.  and  this  blighter.

I  dont  think  we  have  any  good  pics  of  the  Puntius.  This  is  the  only  one.  The  dorsal  has  a  red  sheen.

We  had  a  small  conversation  with  a  farmer  and  he  mentioned  how  the  elephant  menace  was  ruining  'em.  Trampled  fields  everywhere  and  this  was  not  really  a  place  known  for  elephants.

We  spent  bout  20  mins  here  and  decided  to  move  on.  Prasoon  Rajeshwaran  and  Sai  started  collecting  rocks  from  here  and  by  the  time  they  were  done  the  place  looked  like  it  had  been  quarried.

We  decided  look  around  first  and  then  head  into  the  reserve.  The  second  spot  looked  promising  but  there  was  absolutely  no  sign  of  anything  related  to  life  in  these  waters.  Sai  spotted  a  turtle  (???)  and  someone  spotted  a  dead  crab.  Zilch  otherwise.

Dont  get  fooled.  There  s  nothing  here.

 The  solitary  evidence  of  life.

Following  this  path  we  reached  a  small  village  and  we  found  purself  a  rather  willing  guide  who  offered  to  take  us  to  a  nearby  water  body.  Lemme  add  at  this  point  that  he  was  reeking  of  Arrack  and  things  suddenly  started  looking  bright  for  me.

 The  view  from  the  village

We  reached  a  small  temple  and  he  asked  us  to  remove  our  footwear  to  proceed  further  as  this  was  sacred  ground.  I  found  this  logic  rather  daft.  Footwear  not  allowed  but  drunk  people  are.  That  would  make  quite  an  awesome  signboard  me  thinks.

After  a  small  trudge,  a  small  but  beautiful  waterfall  and  no  fish  later  we  headed  back  and  ensured  our  guide  had  enough  money  to  get  some  fluids  back  in  his  system.  By  this  time  I  started  wishing  I  had  some  down  my  system  too.  The  complete  absence  of  fish  had  started  to  get  on  my  nerves  by  now.

Funnily  enough  a  few  huts  (!!!!)  in  the  village  had  Tata  Sky  and  Dish  TV.  I  have  a  retirement  plan  made  up  now.

Heading  back  to  the  reserve  we  hit  another  spot  and  Im  not  gonna  speak  bout  it.  I  guess  its  becoming  rather  predictable  aint  it????  Lets  skip  a  few  spots  and  head  straight  to  the  reserve  please.

We  had  to  walk  say  half  a  kilometre  to  reach  the  water  and  we  had  some  who  walked  willingly, some  who  grumbled  and  some  who  had  to  be  pulled.  The  view  enroute  was  awesome.

Prasoon  probably  hates  this  pic.  He  had  to  walk  over  all  the  mortar  cement  and  other  flat  and  even  surfaces.

 The  View

 The  Waterfall

There  were  some  couples  around  having  fun  (pun  intended).  We  left  our  bags  and  Prasoon  offered  to  guard  'em.  A  few  disturbing  pics  that  emerged  as  a  result  of  his  boredom  should  hopefully  never  see  the  light  of  day.

A  few  swishes  of  hand  nets  later  we  had  loadsa  Wood  Shrimp,  the  same  Puntius  Sp,  Garra  mullya,Channa  gachua  and  some  Ghost  Shrimp.

 The  Shrimp  had  fantastic  colouration.

 Now  you  are  talking!!!!!!   Fish!!!!!

By  now  the  crowd  had  become  huge  and  there  were  around  30  people  engaging  in  rather  lewd  behaviour  (PM  Prasoon  for  pics).

Disclaimer  :  There  was  this  claim  that  I  was  looking  at  some  of  'em  gals  and  exclaimed  awesome.  The  true  story  is  I  had  a  bag  with  a  gachua  in  it  and  thats  all  I  was  looking  at  it.  If  any  of  you  had  seen  what  THEY  looked  like,  you  would  ve  known  what  Im  talking  bout.

An  hour  and  a  rather  sleazed  up  biotope  later,  we  started  packing  the  fish.  I  hadnt  sighted  any  cats  and  hence  wasnt  satisfied  enough.

 A  few  random  pics  :

The  Biotope.  You  can  see  Bala  and  Rajeshwaran  on  the  extreme  left.  Thats  where  all  the  fish  were  collected  from.

 A  different  view.

There  was  a  small  zoo  in  the  reserve  and  we  decided  to  check  it  out.

There  was  a  live  adult  rabbit  inside  this  enclosure.

The  most  colourful  of  'em  all.

Done  with  the  zoo,  we  decided  to  head  to  Vellore  for  lunch.  On  our  way  back,  we  saw  some  local  guys  fishing  and  stopped  and  guess  what  I  saw.

They  were  quite  dead  but  they  were  and  are  atill  cats!!!!!  Lotsa  'em  too.  A  Mystus  sp.  We  tried  out  luck  with  the  nets  and  had  no  luck.  So  I  'borrowed'  a  Mystus  from  the  fishermen  and  'borrowed'  it  all  the  way  home  to  my  tanks.

 Some  of  the  catch  :

 Salmostoma???

 P.bimaculatus

 P.bimaculatus  and  Esomus????

They  had  also  caught  some  good  sized  Channa  but  since  I  had  already  taken  4  gachuas  from  the  trip  I  decided  not  to  indulge  in  'borrowing'  again.

The  Mystus  had  a  dark  red  blood  coloured  spot  on  the  lower  lobe  of  the  caudal.  Initially  I  thought  twas  a  disease  but  by  the  time  I  reached  home  the  damn  lobe  had  fallen  off.  Now  he  s  in  on  his  own.  Eating  FBS  and  BW.  Seems  ok.  Dono  if  the  lobe  will  grow  back  though.

Prasoon  Rajeshwaran  and  Sai  were  collecting  rocks  and  I  wonder  if  they  re  gonna  build  an  entire  fishroom  with  the  pile.

Thats  one  fourth  of  what  it  became!!!!

A  colleague  of  mine  had  suggested  this  restaurant  called  Baby  Residency  (  zero  marks  for  creativity  for  that  I  say!!!).  Starving  by  now  we  were  looking  forward  to  the  biryani  but  twas  past  3  and  twas  all  done.  Parottas  I  strongly  believe  are  amongst  other  things,  are  some  of  the  greatest  things  man  has  ever  done  for  himself.  I  had  this  Ceylon  Chicken  stuffed  parotta  and  man  I  wish  I  could  chew  the  could  now..............

Needless  to  say  Rajeshwaran  had  bitten  more  than  any  of  us  could  chew  and  more.  But  good  news  for  anyone  who  has  met  him.  He  s  allergic  to  prawns.  So  I  ordered  all  the  prawn  I  could  eat  and  more.  Never  has  a  meal  been  more  fulfilling.

 Take  Outs  :

 1)  Not  worth  a  second  visit.
 2)  Cold  running  water  doesnt  always  mean  fish.  Thumb Down
 3)  Arrack  stinks  even  the  next  morning.
 4)  Prawn  for  everyone  on  me!!!!!!!!!!

Good  Write-up  da.  you  summed  up  very  well.  The  place   looked  very  promising  but   it  disappointed  us....

You  forgot  to  mention  about  the  live  bearer  that  Shankar  wasn't  sure  about..  dont  know  when  Prasoon  is  going  to  take  a  good  picture  of  the  same.

Can  you  share  the  picture  of  the  Mystus  and  the  picture  of  the  Ghost  shrimps  that  you  had  taken?   ROFL

 Cheers
 Bala

Very  nice  write  up  and  pictures,  Balaji.  Chuckle

 Let  me  summarize,
You  did  not  find  any  fishes  in  spots  having  no  sleaze,  and  the  only  spot  having  abundant  fishes  had  sleaze/lewd  behavior  all  around.
Hmmm!  interesting.  validates  our  observation.  What  say,Trevor?

 Nayak.
