i  am  planning  to  set  up  a  new  planted  aquarium  of  dimension  5x1.5x2  feet.  I  am  confused  whether  to  go  for  cfl  or  MH  or  t5ho.  which  one  would  be  better  for  this  height  and  also  economical  to  setup  and  run.

why  not  use  T5HO's,   When  this  can  save  some  power.   If  the  power  usage  is  not  a  constraint,  then  go  for  MH  else  the  T5HO's  would  be  ideal.

Else  you  can  use  the  PLL's  which  are  easily  available  at  in  the  electrical  Market.

ive  been  a  fan  of  T5s.....they  save  power  and  generate  less  heat....6-8  T5  HOs  covering  the  color  spectrum  should  do  nice....  (1  choke  drives  2  tubes)
you  could  also  look  at  a  combination  of  T5  HOs  and  MH.....

If  you  havent  made  the  tank  yet,  I  would  suggest  to  go  for  5x2x2  tank  or  a  5x2  with  20  inches  height.  This  way  you  will  pretty  much  be  able  to  grow  any  foreground  plant  you  want  with  T5  HO.

I  personally  prefer  the  T5  HO.

Pondicherry  is  a  very  hot  place.  I  would  definitely  suggest  t5s  as   MH  will  raise  the  water  temp  tremendously.  Also  depends  what  plants  you  want  to  keep.
Generally  speaking  .5  to  1  watt  per  gallon  of  aquarium  water  is  good.  the  lights  need  to  be  of  app  6000K  .  but  i  have  tried  using  the  ones  taht  are  available  in  the  market  as  regular  T5  fittings  and  normally  find  even  these  to  be  quite  good  for  medium  light  requirement  plants
The  cheapest  lighting  that  you  can  do  is  these  regular  T5  s  but  then  the  plant  list  you  can  grow  will  be  restricted  .
many  people  also  use  a  combination  of  t5  aquarium  grade  app  6000k  and  actinic  03  for  top  quality  lighting
 hope  this  is  of  help

 Definitely  MH!

No  offense  but  anyone  opting  for  a  5x1.5x2  planted  tank  shouldnt  have  a  problem  with  electricity  bills!   Smile

Further  for  people  suggesting  HO's,  given  that  the  water  column  will  be  over  20-22",  how  will  the  HO's
reach  the  bottom  plants?  Will  the  light  be  enough?

By  the  way  Vasigerji,  try  for  a  range  of  6000-7000K  bulbs.  I  have  used  OSRAM,  GE  bulbs  with  good  results.
Also,  assuming  you  will  use  a  lot  of  powerful  lights  and  little  aeration,  do  try  to  install  a  couple  of  PC  fans  or  regular
4"  exhaust  fans  to  keep  things  cool  inside  the  hood!

 Regards,
 Amod

may  be  5-6,  36  watts  PLL   along  with  a  good  reflector  can  do  the  job.  i  have  used  them  for  my  1.5ft  deeep  aquarium  and  it  works  fine.

CFLs  generate  a  lot  of  heat,  not  as  much  as  MH  lamps,  but  quite  a  bit.  You're  better  off  with  T5s.

If  this  is  your  first  try  at  planted  tanks,  T5s  would  be  a  great  choice,  they  offer  more  room  for  error  than  MHs  do.

I  would  suggest  going  for  T5s/T5  HO.  I  have  those  36watt  PLLs  on  my  3footer  and  they  generate  lot  of  heat.  If  I  were  to  build  a  4'+  tank,  I  would  go  with  T5s  for  sure.  For  their  efficiency,  I  have  changed  over  to  T5s  for  regular  room  lighting  too  Smile

what  watts/gallon  would  you  recommend....  i  think  mine  is  a  100  u.s.  gallons  approx.  some  say  that  3-4  watts/gallon  is  desirable  for  a  planted  aquarium  while  others  suggest  that  for  a  tank  this  size  the  watts  per  gallon  can  be  reduced  to  2  watts/gallon  or  even  less.  Please  help  me...

note:  at  present  I  am  experimenting  with  a  10  gallon  planted  aquarium  with  2x18  watt  cfls  with  6500K  and  the  results  are  good.  I  have  this  setup  for  about  a  year  now  and  the  plants  are  growing  good.
