 hey  guys
i  am  going  to  change  my  current  planted  tank  setup.
 is  a  2.5  foot  (l)  x  1  foot  (d)  x  1.5  feet  (h)  tank  with  a  2  feet  36W  PL  tube  and  no  CO2.

i  have  around  10  kilos  of  river  sand  as  the  substrate  currently.  and  a  lot  of  rocks.
what  i  am  planning  to  do  is,  remove  all  the  rocks  and  do  a  plain  setup.  but  i  don't  think  10  kilos  of  river  sand  is  enough  for  it.

i  have  seen  in  a  lot  of  shops,  those  people  put  a  top  layer  of  some  round  thing.  they  call  it  fertilizer  layer.

so  what  should  i  use  for  the  top  layer  of  the  substrate?

 my  current  setup-

 Hi

i  have  seen  in  a  lot  of  shops,  those  people  put  a  top  layer  of  some  round  thing.  they  call  it  fertilizer  layer.

this  is  the  substrate  which  is  available  in  the  market  for  planted  aquarium.  You  should  be  using  this  as  the  bottom  layer  and  not  as  the  top  layer,  or  you  can  use  100%  of  it.

Most  popular  substrate  is  ADA  amazonia  II

 Thanks
 Pavan

 Split  your  substrate  as  follows:

 1.  Bottom  layer:  About  an  inch  of  laterite  (red  soil).
 2.  Top  layer:  Gravel  (River  Sand  of  2-3mm  thickness)  about  3"  thick  in  the  front  and  about  4"  at  the  back.

This  is  the  most  basic  requirement  for  your  planted  tank.  Rocks  are  just  decor  and  do  not  help  grow  plants.  In  your  case  you  should  be  looking  at  close  to  20  kgs  of  gravel.

As  you  understand  more  about  planted  tanks  and  their  requirements,  you  can  slowly  experiment  with  ADA  and  other  specialized  substrates.  Meanwhile,  read  a  lot  about  planted  tanks  here.
