Idea  came  from  Ravi's  post.  We  all  get  to  see  many  brilliantly  colored  marine  fishes  that  leave  us  awestruck  and  wondering  whether  we  get  freshwater  fishes  in  such  vibrant  colors?

So  please  list  down  the  fishes  that  you  think  suits  the  category.
The  few  that  comes  immediately  to  mind  are,

 Betta  Sp.
 Labio  bicolor,
 discus?  not  really.

African  Killie  fishes,  Mbuna  and  Bosemani  Rainbows  (in  their  habitat)  come  to  mind  first.

Wow!...  This  thread  start  out  with  a  comparison  to  colorful  marine  fish..  and  are  we  really  discussing  bettas  and  tetras???

In  my  opinion,  only  freshwater  fish  which  can  be  compared  to  the  marine  (reef)  fish  are  African  (Malawi  and  Tanganyika)  Cichlids,  and  maybe  some  SA/CA  Cichlids..

 Just  my  2ยข,
 Sid

Photos  can  be  deceptive,  but  among  the  ones  that  I  have  seen  in  person,  these  three  fit  the  bill  IMO

 Labidochromis  caerluleus
 Sciaenochromis  fryeri
 Nimbochromis  venustus

The  victiorian  cichlids  are  stunning,  but  I  have  not  seen  any  in  person.

let  me  first  list  the  natives  to  my  best  knowledge.
almost  most  of  the  Indian  Barbs  e.g  Melon  barb,  Punitus  Denisonii,  Odessa  barb  are  sure  stoppers
anabantids  such  as  Channa  sp.  e.g  Assam,  Bleheri,  the  Stewarti  complex  etc,  pseudosphromenus  dayi,  Ctenops  noblis,  colisa  sp  etc....
 members  of  the  Sicyopterus  sp.
 Dermogenys  pusillus
 barilius  sp
The  Etroplines...  give  them  good  living  conditions,  you  enjoy  interesting  coloration.
most  of  the  other  natives  such  as  Loaches,  Pseudoglavia  sp,  Hara  sp,  catfish,  Nandus  Nandus,  don't  have  bright  colors  but  they  sure  do  have  an  interesting  behavior,  body  form,  textures  and  markings.
then  out  of  Indian  Freshwater  which  ring  a  bell  in  my  mind  are
most  of  the  american  cichlids  e.g  the  Veija  family,  Dwarf  cichlids,
 Killi  fish
 Rainbows
 Characins
 Bettas
 African  cichlids.
...............................................correct  me  if  im  wrong  fellas...  Sick

Lets  not  forget  the  cute  darios  and  badis.  Small  but  loads  of  colors.

There  are  a  lot  many  American  cichlids  and  livebearers  as  well  on  the  list.

One  more  thing  I  strongly  feel  is,  freshwter  tanks  are  quite  rarely  maintained  with  proper  lighting  (and  substrate)  that  enhance  the  colors  unlike  Salty  setups.

I  am  in  agreement  with  Hamza  in  that  the  lights  we  use  for  for  our  freshwater  tanks  are  a  culprit  in  not  showing  off  the  fishes  in  their  true  colours.  Freshwater  fishes  use  more  refraction-reflection  (like  well  cut  diamonds)  to  show  colours  than  saltwater  fishes  (they  rely  on  pigments  more).  This  makes  the  light  doubly  important.
