I  have  been  doing  tetras  for  a  short  while  now  (about  2  years)  and  have  experimented  with  guppies,  mollies,  sharks  and  bettas  as  well.  But  I  have  been  interested  in  Malawi  cichlids  for  a  while  now.  Could  not  find  interesting  healthy  ones  easily  in  Blr  due  to  which  my  interest  was  dormant.  When  I  met  Prabhu  and  he  promised  that  he  was  going  to  get  some  good  cichlids,  I  decided  on  going  for  it.  Looked  around  for  rocks  that  I  could  make  cave  arrangements  with  but  could  not  find  much.  So  I  decided  to  improvise  with  granite  for  the  time  being.  Probably  it  was  a  good  idea  as  them  seem  to  be  making  the  water  hard.  Am  using  a  sponge  filter  and  sea  sand  with  broken  shells.  My  fish  play  a  lot  with  the  sand  -  constantly  changing  my  scape.

Am  in  the  process  of  making  DIY  caves  for  them  out  of  electrical  conduit  pipes.  Will  post  some  pics  when  they  are  done.

My  fish  seem  to  be  enjoying  the  set-up.  Attaching  some  photos.  Let  me  know  what  you  think.

In  my  opinion,  the  current  granite  arrangement  is  looking  very  good.  If  the  resulting  "caves"  are  too  small  for  your  fish,  just  stack  two  of  them  for  each  layer  before  laying  the  "ceiling"  of  the  cave.

The  current  set  up  is  looking  much  more  natural  than  going  for  those  DIY  "caves"  with  pipes.

Some  other  member  of  IAH  had  gone  for  these  DIY  caves  with  pipes  with  the  following  results:

 The  thread  is:  http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=14321&highlight=pipe+caves

Thanks  Sid  for  the  encouraging  comments.

I  took  your  suggestions  and  increased  the  height  of  the  caves.  My  cichlids  are  definitely  finding  it  easier  to  navigate  around.  I  think  it  has  improved  the  look  also  a  bit.  Will  post  some  pics  in  a  bit.  But  I  have  one  issue  -  since  the  caves  are  open/accessible  from  both  the  front  and  the  back,  whenever  one  of  my  fish  is  hiding  in  one,  another  fish  sneaks  up  from  behind  and  pokes  it  out  of  the  cave.  And  my  snow  white  socolofi  is  super-aggressive.  He's  the  king  of  my  tank.  He  always  bullies  everyone  else.  I  am  planning  the  caves  so  that  I  can  close  one  end  enabling  my  fish  to  hide/rest  inside  them  without  the  fear  of  anybody  sneaking  up  from  behind  and  dislodging  them.  My  cichlids  also  dig  a  lot.  They  kindof  change  the  scape  almost  on  a  daily  basis  -  moving  sand  around,  making  their  own  dug-outs,  passages  and  hiding  places.  Anyway  I  am  planning  to  insert  the  caves  in  between  the  granite  slabs.  Will  post  some  pics  once  done.

 Hi  Sriram

My  tank  is  about  8  gallons  (actually  10  gallons  minus  the  stones  and  sand).  How  many  cichlids  would  you  recommend  ?  I  already  have  5  of  them  living  there.  They  are  about  2  to  2.5  inches  each.

 Hi
Right  now  you  have  the  correct  number  of  fishes.   Chiclids  are  very  much  aggressive  when  it  come  to  their  territory.   Hence  adding  more  no  of  fishes  will  attrach  some  fight  between  them  for  territorial  region  and  you  may  sadly  endup  loosing  the  weak  fishes.

10  Gallons  is  too  small  for  mbunas  (unless  you  keep  only  1).  You  will  soon  have  to  get  a  bigger  tank  for  them.  From  the  picture,  the  tank  looked  bigger.

I  agree  with  you.  By  scaling  the  tank  next  to  the  newspapers,  I  would  say  that  there  is  way  more  than  10  gallons  in  the  tank.  What  are  the  dimensions?

I  am  using  normal  river  sand  as  a  substrate.  Contains  broken  snail  shells,  helps  with  the  ph  as  well.

The  dimensions  of  my  tank  are  11"x12"x18"  -  subtracting  the  substrate  and  stone  volume,  about  10  gal  or  less  I  would  say.

Yes  10  gallons  may  be  bit  too  small.  You  can  also  think  of  putting  some  rocks  just  to  break  the  'regular'  pattern  granite  slabs  make.
