I  am  not  a  Cichlids  expert,  but  I  belive  they  do  need  a  hard  water.  and  thats  why,  in  UK  people  keep  them  with  coral  sand.  I  am  not  sure  if  you  can  get  them  in  India  or  not.

You  should  be  fine  as  you  have  a  lot  of  limestone.

 But  the  tank  looks  good.

 Good  Luck  Smile

 Hi  Rohan,

I  too  got  a  bunch  of  M.  Lombardi  soon  after  your  last  post.  Thanks  for  your  help  and  information  with  that.

(I  am  thinking  of  these  as  a  "learning  curve"  before  I  move  to  Frontosas  and  other  exotic  Tangs.)

About  the  latest  video:  Is  that  one  fish  already  turning  yellow  in  color  or  is  that  just  due  to  the  lighting?  (Because,  I  had  no  idea  they  (the  males)  will  start  showing  their  yellow  color  so  early  in  their  life!)

Also,  another  question  for  you  as  a  PM.

 Thanks,
 Sid

That  fish  started  turning  yellow  after  they  settled  in  well.  So  far,  I  see  two  males  in  there.

Easily  available  in  Bombay.  For  this  setup,  the  rocks  (limestone)  help  raise  the  pH.  Cushed  coral  has  not  been  used.  Have  PM'ed  you  some  more  details.  You  could  also  check  with  fellow  hobbyists  from  Pune.   Smile

Thanks.  This  is  an  update  after  I  gave  away  two  males  from  the  batch  to  avoid  a  lot  of  aggression.

 Hi  Rohan,

It  seems  I  only  have  one  male  in  my  batch  of  Metriaclima  lombardoi.  (Only  one  has  turned  yellow  the  rest  have  same  pattern  as  juveniles.)

I  just  added  4  Melanochromis  Auratus  to  the  tank.  They're  still  juveniles  so  can't  tell  the  gender.

I  plan  to  do  the  same  thing  with  Auratus  as  with  the  Kenyi  (Lombardois):  Keep  4  females  for  each  male  with  lots  of  hiding  places  in  the  tank.  And  till  I  put  them  in  something  larger  than  a  3  footer,  I  plan  to  keep  only  one  male  per  species.

(Next  additions  are  going  to  be  Giraffe  Cichlids  (Nimbochromis  venustus)  if  I  can  find  juveniles  for  the  right  price.)

 Cheers,
 Sid

PS:  I  seem  to  have  one  loner.  It  was  sold  to  me  as  a  Kenyi  (called  "Blue  Morph"  by  LFS  guys  in  Bombay).  But  I  don't  think  it's  a  Kenyi.  It  is  a  solid  blue  (without  stripes).  Will  try  to  post  pictures  for  you  guys  to  help  ID.

I  got  the  Auratus  from  a  LFS  in  Ghatkopar  for  around  the  same  price  as  the  M.  Lombardoi  of  similar  size.

I  have  also  seen  them  at  Kurla  (Kurla  Aquarium)  along  with  several  other  Malawi  Cichlids.  The  fish  at  Kurla  Aquarium  were  a  bit  larger  and  hence  the  price  was  higher.

Currently,  Kurla  Aquarium  (obviously  besides  Aakar)  seems  to  have  the  best  collection  of  Malawi  and  SA/CA  Cichlids.  (They  even  had  a  few  frontosas  the  last  time  I  went  there.)

I  could  only  go  there  late  last  night  (Thursday).  So  most  of  the  shops  were  already  closed  or  shutting  down  (which  might  explain  the  seeming  exorbitant  price  one  them  quoted  for  a  2-inch  Giraffe  cichlid).

 Cheers,
 Sid

 My  guess  is  Pseudotropheus  socolofi

 The  picture  is  uploaded  here:

The  fish  is  the  foreground  is  the  "unknown",  the  one  behind  him  is  the  Lombardoi.

(I  know  the  tank  looks  dirty,  but  it's  mostly  dirty  from  the  outside  and  it's  not  a  display  tank.  Smile)

Looks  like  a  Metriaclima  lombardoi  to  me.  Lets  wait  for  the  Cichlid  experts  to  ID  that  guy.   Very Happy

The  Melanochromis  Auratus  in  the  background.  (first  picture)   Thumb Up
