 color=blue]Hi  Friends,
After  being  18  months  into  marine  aquarium  hobby,  I  have  realized  that  we  have  no  proper  source  for  lighting  requirements  of  our  aquariums....fresh  water  or  salt  water.  We  have  to  largely  depend  upon  LFS's  in  our  cities  or  towns.  Again  most  of  the  time  the  availability  is  not  assured  or  you  might  never  get  what  you  excatly  desire.  Even  if  its  available  its  quality  or  performance  may  not  be  guaranteed.
Surfing  on  the  net  &  after  having  gone  through  various  websites  I  observed  that  reknowned  companies  laike  Philips,  Osram  &  Havells(  which  has  taken  over  Sylvania)  do  manufacture  aquarium  specific  lights  but  these  are  not  available  in  India.  I  hence  decided  to  enquired  with  these  companies  of  which  the  Havells  have  responded  in  a  positive  manner.  Incidentally  they  maufacture  coralstar, aquastar  &  a  few  other  kinds  of  T5  &  T8  lights  under  the  Sylvania  brand  ,which  are  aquarium  specific.
I  really  am  interested  to  know  here  on  IAH  as  to  how  many  of  us  would  be  interested  to  buy  them  if  Havells  imported  them  for  us.
 Regards,
 Prabakar[/color]

I  am  interested...............However  in  India  we  do  have  ADA  lighting  Available  Specifically  for  Aquarium

I  would  still  be  interested  as  the  ADA  lighting  are  comparatively  expensive.........

Do  let  me  know  if  you  are  importing  them

 Hi  Anish,
I  would  like  to  know  where  ADA  lightins  are  available.

 Friends,
The  company  executive  has  told  me  that  he  would  be  calling  me  within  a  day  or  two  after  enquiring  with  the  concerned  departments.I  guess  they  might  import  if  our  quantity  is  large  &  so  the  pricing  would  largely  depend  on  the  quantities  as  well  as  the  import  duties  involved.  I  checked  with  two  websites,  the  minmum  retail   prices  start  from  Euros  13  to  14  for  the  18/24  watt  tubes  upto  Euros  16  to  18  for  54  watt  tubes.
 Regards,
 Prabakar

 Hi  all,

I  also  had  this  problem  of  finding  proper  lighting  for  my  tanks  when  I  started  off  in  this  hobby  of  planted  aquariums.  After  having  done  a  good  deal  of  reading  etc,  I  have  found  out  that  the  best   and  more  importantly  affordable  lights  for  planted  aquaria  are  in  the  following:
 1.  A  colour  temperature  of  6400K  or  more.  8400K  would  be  quite  good.
 2.  A  CRI  of  90  or  more.
 3.  A  80  lumens  or  more  per  watt  output.

For  small  tanks,  I  use  a  T5  High  Output  Starcoat  24  watts  GE  lights  on  a  Luminic  T5  24  watts  tube  fitting.  Each  tube  come  fitting  costs  around  Rs  600.  Each  tube  is  of  2000  lumens  and  with  fitting  is  around  2  foot  in  length.  So  for  a  normal  2.5  footer  or  3  footer  tank,  six  such  fitting  will  give  around  12000  lumens.  Which  in  my  opinion  is  really  good  and  works  out  to  nearly  25  lumens  per  square  inch.  Costing  wise  it  will  still  be  under  Rs  4000  which  is  far  far  cheaper  than  any  ADA  or  branded  aquatic  lighting.  And  plant  growth  is  lush  and  robust.

For  bigger  tanks,  I  use  a  T5  Phillips  HO  lamp  and  fittings.  The  Philips  lamps  are  54  watts,  CRI  90,  colour  temp  8400  K  and  each  tube  is  4400  lumens.  Each  fitting  is  approx  4  foot  in  length  and  each  fitting  takes  in  2  tubes.  I  use  8  tubes  in  4  fittings  in  a  five  foot  tank  and  the  entire  setup  costs  around  Rs  8000.

Anybody  can  directly  contact  the  phillips  or  GE  offices  to  get  the  exact  product  code  and  accordingly  order.  The  phillips  lamps  are  manufactured  in  the  Netherlands  but  Phillips  India  can  get  you  the  same  in  a  couple  of  weeks  time.

 Cheers,

 Vijay.

 Hi  Friends,
The  HAVELL  people  contacted  me  today  again.  They  have  asked  me  what  quantity  of  stock  I  could  pick  up  from  them  on  behalf  of  the  aquarists.  So  I  really  need  a  good  response  here  or  this  thing  is  not  going  to  work  out.
I  might  have  to  ask  the  local  LFS's  also  if  they  would  buy  them.
 Regards,
 Prabakar

Since  there  was  hardly  any  response  regarding  the  coralstar  &  aquastar  lights  manufactured  by  Sylvania  UK,  I  guess  I've  to  inform  the  Havell  executive  about  the  lack  of  interest  from  fellow  aquarists  here  on  IAH.
 Thank  you.
 Regards,
 Prabakar.

 Dear  Friends,
These  are  the  details  of  the  lights  that  I  had  asked  Havell  about.
 1.Sylvania  Make  24  W  T5  HO  Coralstar  lamp  with  10000  K  temperature  -
 2.  Sylvania  Make  24  W  T5  HO  Aquastar  lamp  with  10000  K  temperature  -.
Incidentally  they  do  manufacture  lamps  with  higher  wattage  upto  4'  length....but  I  have  not  enquired  regarding  those.
 Regards,
 Prabakar
