 Hello  ,

I  am  setting  up  a  3  feet  fresh  water  tank  to  house  few  plants  and  few  fishes.

I  want  this  to  be  self  sufficient  ecosystem  or  rather  as  close  to  an  ecosystem  as  possible...

Correct  lighting  is  of  prime  importance  and  thats  where  i  am  seeking  your  help...I  plan  to  set  up  3  ,  20  W  hitachi  T4s  (  i  think,  they  are  T4).

 Please  suggest  how  to  proceed.

 thanks  in  advance,

 Tan

Your  lighting  is  too  low  you  must  have  at  least  150W  of  lighting.
If  I  am  not  mistaken  your  tank  is  2ft  deep  and  15inch  high,  or  is  it  other  way  round?

Tanvinder,  with  a  2ft  high  tank  you  better  go  for  angels  or  discuss.
Planted  tanks  with  2ft  height  need  a  lot  of  light.

I  plan  to  put  some  Guppies  and  swordtails..  and  then  introduce  coin  size  angels..

I   might  also  add  some  neon  tetra  if  am  able  to  find  them.

Few  plants  like  Valesnaria  and  Cocumba  will  be  planted  to  provide  some  shelter  to  the  young  ones  before  they  are  eaten  by   Angels...

No  discuss  as  of  now..  have  no  experience  with  them  so  would  not  want  to  test  in  this  initial  phase...  probably  would  try  it  in  next  3  months.

Coming  back  to  teh  orignal  topic...  i  plan  to  set  up  two  T4...  would  that  be  enough  for  basic  plants  which  i  mentioned  above?

 thanks,

Tanvinder,  you  can  have  gaint  vals,  anubias  and  ferns  in  the  tank.  Few  crypts  might  also  do  fine  with  low  light.  Im  really  not  sure  about  cobomba  though.

If  you're  new  to  discuss,  keeping  discuss  would  be  a  big  NO.
Try  to  keep  plants  as  suggested  by  Deepak.

On  a  similar  sized  tank(36x18x24)  I  have  2  36watt  plls.  I  have  grown  the  same  plants  that  I  have  mentioned  earlier  without  any  problems.  And  2  of  the  anubias  even  flowered.  Make  sure  you  have  a  good  filter  with  good  amount  of  flow.

 Tanvinder,
Please  update  your  location....it  would  be  helpful  to  know  that  cause  we  can  guess  about  the  temperature  too.

If  this  is  your  first  planted  setup,  I  suggest  go  with  easy  plants.  Valisneria,  Cryptocoryenes,  Ferns  and  may  be  Annubia.  In  that  case  you  won't  need  much  light.  What  you  have  will  be  sufficient.  With  150  watts  light  you  will  need  CO2,  dosing.....  So  may  be,  try  initially  with  these  plants,  and  with  the  advent  of  winter,  you  can  gradually  move  towards  a  heavily  planted  setup
Regarding  fishes:  Do  not  try  Angels  and  Neons  in  the  same  tank.  Guppies  and  Neons  togather  will  be  fine

Drop  the  idea  setting  up  anything  new,  till  the  time,  heat  goes  down.  Everything  will  be  dead.  Wait  for  the  rains  to  start.

 Tanvinder,
Welcome  to  the  aquarist  club  of  45  degrees  celsius.  I  am  tempted  to  agree  with  Tirtha   but  knowing  how  impossible  to  resist  setting  up  a  new  tank,  will  not  discourage  you   Chuckle

Try  easy  going  plants  (my  previous  posts)...and  yes,  do  install  a  small  fan  (all  of  us  are  doing  that  now).  And  if  the  temperature  inside  your  room  is  below  30  dgrees  then  it  will  not  be  a  problem  at  all.  So  make  a  modest  beginning  with  crypts,  Anubias,  Ferns  and  Vals.  All  of  them  will  survive  the  heat  (upto  28-30  degrees  tank  temp).  However,  make  sure  you  do  not  put  too  many  fishes  at  this  stage.
