Was  in  dire  need  of  a  proper  lighting  hood  and  didnt  want  to  go  the  Acrylic  way  as  all  my  DIY's  were  in  acrylic...

so  searched  for  lighter,  stronger  material  and  ended  up  with  Aluminum.

Wanted  a  patterned  hood  and  ended  up  with  the  following  design..

This  is  the  basic  design  of  the  hood

This  is  the  inside  of  the  hood..  without  the  lighting  fixtures.

The  concept  was  to  hide  the  ballast  and  other  wiring  in  the  1.5"  bended  portion  at  the  base.  Most  the  Electronic  ballasts  are  1.5"  in  thickness  maximum  and  if  you  we  look  at  T5s  they  were  in  1.25"  in  thickness.

the  hood  is  ready  after  fabrication...  with  error's  in  the  sizes.

will  post  those  pictures  soon...  need  to  thank  ashwin  for  taking  those  pictures.

 Pk

Hey  PK,  Looks  good.  Which  software  was  used  to  make  these  designs?  Also  why  the  holes?  How  do  you  feed  fish?

the  holes  are  for  the  3"  fans..

This  is  a  hang  on  hood.  not  an  enclosed  hood.  can  use  metallic  string  to  hang  it  from  the  ceiling  or  can  make  separate  posts  that  will  rest  on  the  tank  sides  and  this  will  sit  on  top  of  that  similar  to  that  of  ADA  or  other  Chinese  Hoods  available  in  the  market.

used  google  Sketchup  for  the  design.

had  asked  my  carpenter  to  do  the  job  and  since  my  supervision  was  not  complete  on  the  job  it  had  a  few  errors  that  need  ratification.

the  missing  components  were  the  hole  for  the  fan  and  reduction  in  the  sizes...it  was  4'X1'6"  hood..  but  the  height  was  reduced  to  3"  instead  of  the  required  5"  so  fixing  the  fan  was  an  issue.

these  are  the  pics  of  the  hood  that  was  done..

 inside  the  Hood

Full  Hood  Shot  :  without  removing  the  sticker...

side  shot..  not  a  perfecto  pro  finish..  but  its  good  enough  for  me.

shot  showing  the  riveting  of  the  edges..here  the  bend  was  on  1/2"  instead  of  the  required  1.5"  so  there  was  an  issue  as  the  ballast  when  placed  inside  would  project  outside.

the  curve,  it  was  only  1"  curve  instead  of  teh  2.5"  requested  for.

What  a  bummer  when  these  guys  don't  make  to  specifications.  I  see  that   you  posted  so  many  images  in  one  post.  It  does  not  allow  me  to  post  more  than  3  attachments  in  a  post.  How  did  you  do  it?  Also  since  this  will  be  a  hanging  kind  of  hood  (not  enclosed),  why  do  you  need  the  fans?

need  fans  @  an  angle  to  hit  the  water  to  reduce  temp  also  the  fans  on  the  hood  will  reduce  the  heat  of  the  bulbs  that  affect  water  temp.

upload  pics  to  the  gallery  and  link  them  to  your  post  using    command.

Excellent,  looks  like  a  professionally  made  one.  How  would  the  cost  compare  to  the  ready  made  aquarium  light  fixtures  ?

mod-the-pc  :  costs  about  50-60%  of  the  regular  hoods  of  that  size  and  having  about  8  bulb  fixtures  in  them...  rivetting  was  done  by  me...  but  the  bending  was  done  by  my  carpenter,  and  NO  they  dont  do  it  on  a  regular  basis,  since  this  is  a  guy  who  works  for  me,  i  could  force  it  upon  him.

hey  shreyas:  thanks  for  the  appreciation..  can  take  u  in  as  sishya  anytime   Welcome   but  at  a  fee  -  the  fee  shall  be  the  total  cost  of  all  my  DIY's  so  far   ROFL
regarding  the  hood  :  was  longing  to  do  this  for  long  and  u  have  seen  my  marine  hood  and  how  shabby  it  is...  so  been  designing  one  for  long  and  just  now  got  the  time  to  do  it...  and  since  it  was  done  by  my  carpenter  it  was  less  time  from  my  side...  the  pattern  was  required  to  give  the  hood  a  shape..otherwise  it  will  look  like  a  curved  top  didnt  want  that...  if  i  wanted  a  flat  or  a  simple  curved  top  then  my  labor  cost  on  it  would  have  been  50%  lesser!!!  as  they  just  need  to  bend  it  not  hit  the  grooves  and  bend  it  at  the  grooves.
