Keeping  aquarium  since  a  long  time.  Many  times  think  about  to  keep  discus.  But  I  don’t  like  this  precious  fish  in  bare  bottom  tank.  My  wife  likes  only  three  fish  species:  Discus,  Oscar  and  Silver  dollar.  She  always  inspired  me  to  buy  discus  but  I  always  used  refuse  her.  Many  times  she  got  irritated.  But  I  want  to  engage  her  in  my  hobby.  So  I  decided  to  keep  the  Discus  in  a  tank.  I  want  to  start  discus  keeping  on  marriage  anniversary  or  her  birthday.  Fortunately,  Venky  Sir  has  started  thread  to  sale  his  discus  on  April  19,  2010.  I  contacted  him  and  told  all  the  matter.  He  advised  me  to  keep  Torquise  Discus  in  planted  aquarium  and  agreed  to  give  me  a  healthy  and  beautiful  pair  of  Discus.  I  went  his  home  at  evening  and  got  a  pair.  His  home  is  approx  25  km  away  from  my  place.  But  the  traffic  of  Delhi  will  take  1  hour  and  35  minutes  in  the  way.  Every  red  light  was  increasing  my  heart  beat.  At  last  I  reached  home  without  any  causality.  First  of  all,  I  removed  fish  from  the  4  footer  planted  aquarium  and  housed  them  in  another  2  footer  and  left  only  4  sarpe  tetra,  4  mollies  and  several  guppies.  My  wife  and  kids  stood  around  the  aquarium.  After  that  I  released  Discus  in  this  tank.  They  found  a  corner  within  a  few  second  and  hide  behind  water  sprite  plant.  They  had  not  taken  any  food.  I  was  disappointed.
Next  day  I  contacted  to  Venky  and  tell  him  the  situation.  He  told  me  don’t  worry;  they  will  be  normal  within  2-3  days.  I  tested  the  pH  of  water  and  reported  to  Venky.  He  told  me,  “All  things  are  normal”.  I  read  a  lot  of  from  internet  and  other  sources  and  feel  that  now  I  am  able  to  keep  Discus.
On  dated  April  23,  2010,  I  removed  all  other  fishes  excluding  a  pair  of  mollies,  four  small  sarpe  tetras.  After  two  hours  they  came  out  and  enjoyed  food.
Need  a  lot  of  suggestions  to  run  this  aquarium  successfully.  I  am  planning  to  introduce  two  more  Discus  (Red  color),  2  Albino  cory  and  1  dozen  Neon  Tetras  in  future.
A  lot  of  Thanks  to  Venky  Rajshekhar  Reddy  for  fish,  valuable  suggestions  and  help.

 Dear  Rajiv,

Your  discus  looks  nice  in  this  planted  tank  .  Good  that  you  have  not  started  with  smaller  size  discus  in  this  planted  tank  .  You  need  to  do  controlled  feeding  with  discus  in  planted  tank  .

What  are  you  feeding  them   ?
What  is  your  WC  schedule  ?
What  is  the  tank  water  Temp  ?

 Thanks

For  your  information  Scorpio,  the  turks  were  bought  from  Shiva  4-5  months  back  when  they  were  very  small.

The  setup  looks  good.   As  I  said  earler  you  should  keep  discus  in  a  number  of  six  or  above  for  them  to  feel  secure.  Have  you  got  Hikari  Bio  Gold?  Nirav  has  a  stock  of  it  and  you  can  approach  him  for  it.  Shiva  has  enquired  about  the  feeding  regime.  Kindly  answer  him.  If  today  my  discus  are  looking  healthy  and  fine.  It  is  all  the  good  inputs  and  guidance  I  received  from  Shiva.  Which  in  turn  I  am  imparting  to  you.

 Some  questions  knocking  my  brain:

 1.  Can  I  apply  fertilizer  for  plants  in  this  aquarium?  As  I  read  till  now,  Nitrate/Nitrite  are  harmful  for  Discus.  Can  I  dose  only  micro  elements  such  as  Microsol  B  etc.
 2.  What  will  be  ideal  temperature  for  this  tank  for  Discus  and  plants  both?
 3.  I  also  want  to  keep  one  more  pair  of  Discus  in  this  tank.  Which  one  will  Hardy  variant  of  Discus?  I  will  prefer  any  Reddish  shade.
 4.  One  of  my  friend  suggest  me,  AIRSTREAM  SPONGE  FILTER  for  this  tank.  Where  can  I  got  the  same?
 5.  Best  foods  available  in  the  market  to  fulfill  there  all  the  requirements.
 6.  If  I  keep  minimum  bioload  in  the  aquarium,  can  I  change  50%  water  twice/thrice  in  the  week  or  daily  water  change  is  mandatory?
 7.  Want  to  buy  a  good  book  for  study  about  discus.  Which  one  is  best?  Any  e-book  ..........

 Please  help  me.

 Hi  Rajiv,

That  is  a  nice  view  !  BTW,  what  is  the  amount  of  lighting  in  your  tank?  Do  they  get  stressed?

 Regards

Venky  Sir,  if  you  have  a  question  regarding  discus,  the  answer  will  be  beneficial  for  all  the  Discus  lovers.  The  answer  of  Genius  one's  question  always  shows  the  ways  to  others.

Controlled  feeding  and  less  WC  will  not  stunt  your  discus  ,  Your  discus  will  grow  at  normal  rate  and  not  as  fast  as  commercail  breeders  grow  with  force  feeding  and  multiple  WC  .
