 Tarang  got  it  right.

Now  here's  a  larger  contraption.  Very  mechanical  isn't  it  ?

The  "larger  mechanical  contraption"  in  Madan's  post  is  a  Chinese  fishing  net  (like  they  have  in  Kochi).

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_fishing_nets_%28of_Kochi%29

The  "correct  answer"  (given  by  tarang)  apparently  is  a  basket  fishermen  carry  to  keep/store  the  catch.

I  wonder  what  is  the  prize  for  this  Smile

 Sid

This  was  bought  at  a  souvenir  shop  at  Kaziranga,  it's  a  miniature  of  the  one  the  lady  is  using  in  tarang's  link.

It's  used  for  catching  fish  in  rice  paddies.

You  find  people  selling  small  fish  by  the  kilo,  on  the  road  side,  from  the  small  jar  like  thing  the  woman  has  tied  to  her  back.
 Jakoi  and  Kaloi.  The  twosome.

Never  heard  that  word,  but  as  quoted  by  Tarang  its  known  as  a  Jakoi.  The  one  in  the  1st  picture  is  a  very  miniature  replica  of  the  Jakoi,  which  is  used  to  catch  the  fish  and  then  transferred  to  a  Khaloi  which  looks  very  similar  to  a  clay  matka  but  made  of  bamboo  only  so  as  the  Jakoi.  Before  and  after  the  paddy  fields  are  harvested  the  village  women  folk  will  go  the  the  muddy  fields  and  place  the  Jakoi  besides  their  feet,  then  with  their  feet  they  would  slash  and  push  the  muddy  waters  towards  the  Jakoi  mouth,  hence  trapping  the  small  fishes,  the  fish  is  then  transferred  to  the  Khaloi.

Madan  Sir,  the  picture  you  have  shown  is  known  as  a  Tonni  Jaal  in  Assam,  few  are  three  times  the  size  in  the  picture.  Very  common  in  India  and  also  other  S.E.  Asian  countries.

Trevor  Sir,  will  try  and  get  pictures  of  the  women  catching  fishes  by  these,  next  time  I  go  out  of  Guwahati.  Smile

 Regards
 Simanta
