I  have  been  using  Eheim  2217  for  the  last  2  months  and  today,  decided  to  clean  the  same.

I  disconnected  the  power,  released  the  side  clips,  but  to  my  surprise  found  that  the  top  part
is  just  turning,  but  not  geting  released.  I  tried  to  pull  the  top  part  with  my  fingers  in  the  notch  for
 the  clips.  But  it's  stuck.

I  didn't  want  to  use  any  force,  hence  decided  to  put  it  back  and  the  same  is  functioning  smoothly.

Need  expert  advice  and  suggestion  on  how  to  open  this  filter.

 Regards,
 K  Ram

The  cannister  is  air-tight,  so  when  you  lock  the  quick-disconnect  in  the  input  and  output  pipes  and  try  to  remove  the  lid,  it  does  not  come  out  easily.  Disconnect  the  filter  from  the  inlet  and  outlet,  take  the  cannister  to  the  wash  room.  Open  the  knobs  (  keep  it  in  on  position  )  of  the  qick-disconnect,  so  that  all  the  water  in  the  cannister  flows  out.
NOW  try  opening  the  lid......it  will  come  out  easily  since  there  is  no  vaccum  force.

 Hello  Ram,

You  have  to  open  the  still  attached  single  isolation  valve  to  the  discharge  side  of  the  filter.

The  Vacuum  being  created  with  the  tap  closed  is  the  reason  the  top  of  the  filter  is  not  coming  out.

Adding  my  2217  issue  into  the  same   thread,  pls  don't  mind  ram.

I  seem  to  have  another  kind  of  issue  with  my  Eheim  2217.  Don't  know  if  it's  normal  or  not......

Everytime  the  power  goes  off  and  comes  back,  or  when  the  filter  is  switched  on,  I  can  hear  the  sound  of  the  impeller  blades  hitting  the  cover/casing  .  I  can  hear  this  sound  for  1-2  seconds  after  I  switch  on  or  when  the  power  comes  back.  Thereafter  it's  normal  and  runs  without  any  sound.

IS  this  normal  in  a  2217  or  should  I  be  concerned  ?!  Why  does  it  make  this  sound  ?!

 Regards
 Prabhu  M

Thats  normal.  Thats  caused  by  air  bubbles  trapped  in  the  impeller.  Goes  off  in  some  time,  as  they  are  pushed  out.  If  it  was  really  the  impeller  blades  rubbing  against  something,  it  wont  stop  after  sometime.

 @nytyn  ,
If  it  was  the  airbubbles  trapped,  then  it  would  go  away.  Why  does  the  sound  come  'EVERYTIME'  the  switch  on  the  filter.  And  hearing  the  sound,  it  sounds  like  the  impeller  hitting  some  thing.

I  would  not  worry  unless  this  noise  is  on  continuous  basis.
Power-cut  makes  air-bubbles  get  trapped  in  the  impeller.  When  power  resumes,  noise  is  caused  due  to  trapped  air-bubbles  playing  with  impeller  for  few  seconds.  Quickly  this  bubbled  area  is  cleared  and  filter  goes  back  to  silent  mode.

When  the  pump  stops,  the  soft  iron  core  that  drives  the  impeller  rests  against  the  magnet  inside.  Next  time  you  open  the  filter,
insert  soft  iron  core  into  the  hole  where  it  rotates.  You'll  find  that  it  gets  attracted  to  the  sides.
The  clearance  is  very  small,  the  ceramic  shaft  has  a  greater  clearance.

Next  time  the  filter  starts  the  soft  iron  core  will  be  touching  the  sides,  and  makes  a  noise.

 Madan,
So  do  you  say  that  this  noise  for  a  few  sec's  when  switched  on  should  be  OK  ?!  That  I  should  not  be  worried  ?!

You  should  be  worried,  if  you  have  very  low  voltage  for  a  long  time.  The  filter  will  continuously  make  noise.
The  rotor  does  not  speed  up  fully  and  will  keep  touching  the  sides.

You'll  finally  see  a  separation  of  the  individual  plates  that  go  to  make  up  the  soft  iron  core.
A  break  of  the  notch/spigot  that  locks  and  drives  the  impeller,  has  happened  to  me  because  of  this.
 How  soon?  I  don't  know.
Eventually  yes,  you'll  have  some  form  of  damage.

Switch  off  the  filter  when  you  have  low  voltage  for  an  extended  time  and  the  filter  continuously  makes  noise.

After  this  incident,  I  installed  a  servo  stabiliser  for  my  aquariums,  with  a  built  in  low  voltage  cutout.
A  one  time  investment  on  a  stabiliser  was  cheaper  than  the  rotor  of  a  2028  in  the  good  old  days.
I  was  running  6  Eheim  filters  at  that  time  with  a  total  investment  of  over  40K  on  the  filters.

That's  a  LOT  of  investment  on  the  filters  you  have.  No  wonder  Eheim  would  be  a  very  profitable  company  to  run   Chuckle

I  get  this  sound  only  for  about  1-2  sec  after  power  on.  So,  I  presume  I  should  not  be  worried....  ?!

Very  happy  to  note  your  feedback.

By  'single  position  isolation  valve'  -  you  mean  the  'inlet'  or  'outlet'  in  the  filter  ?

Thanks  Prabhu  for  your  detailed  inputs.

Yes,  I  did  disconnect  the  filter  from  the  inlet  and  outlet  leading  to  the  tank  and  also  took  this  to  the  washroom,  but  I  did  not  drain  the  water  from  the  filter,  which  could  be  the  problem.  I  will  try  again  next  weekend  and  let  you  know  if  this  issue  is  resolved.

Outlet  valve,  that's  on  the  top,  that's  what  will  allow  air  into  the  filter.
The  bottom  one  will  not  drain  the  filter  until  the  top  is  open.  Vacuum  again.

Prabhu,  I  now  run  2  filters,  and  4  more  ready  to  use  in  case  I  decide  to  increase  the  number  of  tanks  again.
 Some  I  sold  last  year,  1  of  2213,  and  1  of  2215.

I  have  never  had  an  Eheim  filter  fail  on  me  yet,  while  I  am  away  on  a  ship.
THAT's  why  Eheim  is  a  very  profitable  company  to  run  !  Chuckle
