I  just  thought  I  would  post  a  photo  of  my  pond  that  I  took  the  other  day,  I  have  made  some  very  minor  alterations  to  the  pond  in  the  last  year  or  so  but  nothing  major.

I  have  also  just  purchased  my  final  3  koi  for  my  collection,  all  hand  picked  from  Japan

 Hi  utsuri:

 Doitsu  kujaku:

 Doitsu  hariwake  yamabuki:

There  are  a  couple  of  fish  that  I  bought  small  and  their  patterns  havent  developed  as  I  would  of  liked  so  these  may  be  moved  on  this  summer,  this  will  give  me  the  chance  to  get  another  koi  maybe  but  for  now  my  collection  is  complete   Smile

 Great  looking  Koi.

How  do  you  manage  this  in  the  winter?  (In  the  first  picture,  it  seems  like  this  pond  is  not  completely  indoors.  Is  it?)

 Cheers,
 Sid

 Cheers,
 Sid

The  pond  is  enclosed  on  2  sides  and  has  a  roof  over  it,  the  two  sides  that  are  left  open  are  sheltered.  The  pond  stays  fairly  warm  all  winter  with  the  pumps,  UV's  and  air  pumps  running  the  only  down  side  is  that  because  of  the  roof  the  pond  doesnt  get  full  sun  so  it  takes  a  bit  longer  for  it  to  warm  up  compared  to  open  ponds  but  on  an  upside  it  also  doesnt  suffer  the  substantial  temperature  drops  in  the  spring  like  open  top  ponds.

The  fish  are  certainly  happy  and  will  feed  all  winter  and  have  still  grown  over  the  last  winter.

 Thanks  Alistair   Smile

The  pond  is  just  over  6000  gallons  and  goes  from  6'  deep  at  the  rear  of  the  pond  to  just  over  7'  deep  at  the  front,  it  has  3x  Hozelock  ecomax  9000  filters  running  that  have  been  modified  slightly,  each  filter  houses  a  16w  UV  (normally  probably  not  enough  but  because  of  the  roof  adequate).  I  have  a  Koi  Pro  50  air  pump  running  that  delivers  50L/minute  to  3x  6"  ceramic  discs  on  the  bottome  of  the  pond  and  a  4"  ring  airstone  in  the  bottom  of  each  filter.  Each  filter  runs  at  around  4000  litres  each  hour.

I  have  a  submersible  pump  that  runs  straight  to  the  drain  and  once  a  fortnight  I  let  it  drain  for  an  hour  or  so  which  removes  about  30%  to  40%  of  pond  water  and  then  drop  hose  pipe  in  and  start  filling  which  usually  takes  the  rest  of  the  day.
