 Hi  all

Opening  this  thread  as  I  was  being  asked  to  do  to  get  better  response  ,  hopefully  it  helps.

Wanted  to  know  if  any  hobbyists  from  Mumbai  or  Navi  Mumbai  setting  up  a  planted  tank  or  done  it  lately,  as  i  wanted  to  source  laterite  ,  river  sand  and  plants  for  my  new  set  up.  Not  able  to  find  any  in  Vashi  LFS.

 My  tanks  specs  are  -  30  X  18  X  18
Planning  to  use  an  existing  BOYU  1000  internal  filter.  No  CO2
Driftwoods  would  at  last  be  put  touse  (collected  from  the  last  trip  near  Pune)
It  would  be  a  only  plant  tank  for  sometime  and  would  like  to  go  for  an  jungle  set  up.

How  much  substrate  would  be  required  for  my  tank  specs.  Light  suggestions  as  it  would  be  on  my  terrace  (no  prob  for  indirect  light  during  day)

 Looking  ahead  for  expertise.

PS  -  want  to  set  up  this  tank  by  next  weekend  before  leaving  for  my  tour.

Set  the  tank  up  after  returning  from  your  tour,  Any  type  of  planted  tank  needs  lots  of  monitoring  and  care  in  the  initial  days.  Its  when  the  tank  has  settles  down  into  stable  state  that  you  can  take  it  easy  and  skimp  on  the  maintainance  aspect.

Well  thats  all  fine  there,  tank  size, filter  wood=need  to  soak  it  before  tour.  :)

To  the  substrate  part,  simple  calc-  you  need  2.5"  as  an  average  thickness  of  substrateso  thats  30X18X2.5=75X45X4.5cm3=15.8liters.
So  what  you  need  is  1/3rd  of  lowest  base  as  Laterite/redsoil/any  safe  fertile  soil  =  5liters  =  ~6-7Kg

Rest  of  10liters  sand=appx~13Kg  of  sand.
Grain  of  sand  -better  to  be  in  3mm-5mm.

If  people  dont  reply  here,  blast  the  people  with  PM  whom  ever  you  see  posting  updates  of  their  tank.

Light  2ftX2  PhilipsTrulites=2X18=36W.  Thats  should  be  fine  to  grow  decent  plants,  with  some  very  efficient  DIY  Aluminum  hood  <  which  you  should  be  doing  now.
And  keeping  them  as  close  as  possible  to  water  surface  to  avoid  light  spills.  Rock On

That  will  be  easy  with  few  nice-Good  looking  weeds<after  tour.

Till  then  happy  and  safe  journey.  Thumb Up
 Enjoy!i

Thanks  a  lot  Mayur  and  Sai  you  are  always  there  to  help  out  man   Thumbs Up

What  if  we  use  fine  sand  say  less  than  3  mm  ,  does  it  hinder  in  roots  catching  ground  or  any  other  specific  reason.

What  are   the  plants  i  can  go  for,  my  interests  are  in  growing  moss  on  wood  and  a  carpet  too.

 Hey  bro,

Moss=  Java  will  survive,  it  will  grow,  flourish  too.  But  little  slow  than  hI-funDa  tanks.
Carpet  plant=  my  ever  favourite  jodi(pair)  of  tenellus  and  dwarf  sagittaria  happily  throw  1runner  per  week.

As  your  other  plants=  Dwarf  ambulia/giant  ambulia,  rotala.sp,  and  the  every  junGely  valisineria.
 Crypt.wendtii  and  aponogeton  bulbs
You  can  surely  go  for  more  costly  low  light  plants  like  fern/anubias.  But  I  wouldnt  have   Sad   for  my  pocket.

Your  assumption  with  fine  sand  is  right,  to  add  to  that  anareobic  sand  is  bad  for  any  animal  life,  google  it  out.

 Cheers!
