A  friend  of  mine,  Herman  Meeus,  President  of  the  Belgian  Killifish  Association  ("Belgische  Killifish  Vereniging")  is  looking  for  the  killifish  Aphanius  dispar  stoliczkanus  from  Gujarat.

Does  anyone  have  any  information  about  these  killifish?

Is  Aphanius  dispar    found  in  Gujarat  or  surrounding  areas?

Is  there  a  Killifish  Society  in  India?

 Please  Help.

Look  forward  to  hearing  from  you.

 Happy  New  Year

I  see  you've  asked  this  question  in  a  couple  of  places...  Smile

To  the  best  of  my  knowledge,  there  is  no  formal  killie  club  in  India.

Do  you  have  any  information  on  the  date  it  was  last  collected?  That  and  a  collection  locality  (if  available)  would  be  a  place  to  start  with.

 Hi,

This  may  have  already  be  known  but  Fish  Base  states  the  following  :-

 1.  Alphanius  dispar  stoliczkanus  is  referred  as  Aphanius  dispar  dispar

 Details  are  at
 http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=4813

Some  reference  form  fishbase  states  :-

Indian  Ocean:  Egypt  to  Somalia  southward  to  Eil,  a  landlocked  population  in  the  Siwa  Oasis,  western  Egypt.  Immigrant  through  the  Suez  Canal  into  the  southeastern  Mediterranean  basin,  Egypt  and  Israel.  Elsewhere:  Dead  Sea,  Red  Sea,  Persian  Gulf,  western  India;  landlocked  populations  in  Saudi  Arabia,  Iran.
Biology:      Occurs  in  coastal  zones,  also  found  in  oasis  pools  with  hyper  saline  to  fresh  water  (Ref.  3788).  Forms  schools.  Chiefly  a  herbivorous  species  (Ref.  13530).  Not  a  seasonal  killifish.  Very  difficult  to  maintain  in  aquarium  (Ref.  27139).  Spawn  in  areas  where  roots  of  hyacinth  or  other  floating  plants  abound  (Ref.  44327).

 Occurrence  :-  http://www.fishbase.org/Museum/OccurrencesList.cfm?ID=4813&GenusName=Aphanius&SpeciesName=dispar+dispar&fc=212&StockCode=5042&sps=&vlm=

In  India  I  guess  it  is  available  in  Kutch  Region  In  Gujarat,  has  any  IAH  members  seen  it  in  LFS,  I  guess  one  reason  to  have  a  Native  Indian  Fish  Database  as  a  part  of  this  site  is  this....

 Hi  retro_gk  &  joyban,
Thank  you  for  taking  time  to  reply,  which  is  very  helpful.
I  have  passed  your  comments  to  Herman  Meeus  and  will  let  you  know  what  he  has  to  say.
Perhaps  he  might  like  to  join  indianaquariumhobbyist.com

Do  we  have  any  IAH  members  in  Gujrat?

 Best  fishes,
 Iggy

Dr.  Murthy  is  from  Vadodara,  Gujarat.  We  can  ask  him  to  keep  a  lookout.
Have  you  tried  contacting  Tony  Pinto?  He  had  come  for  a  collection  trip  to  India  sometime  back.

 Had  a  reply  from  Herman:
"Aphanius  dispar  stoliczkanus  has  been  found    in  Gujarat:  "in  a  small,
quiet  freshwater  stream  at  the  village  Joorun  and  at  Lodai  along  the  edge
of  the  Rann  (Kachi),  West  India".        He  does  not  have  a  date  for  collection.

Do  you  know  where  these  villages  (towns?)  are?

 Thanks,
 Iggy

 Guys,
Give  me  sometime  I'll  get  back  to  you  with  the  info.  I  only  need  a  good  identification  snap  to  show  to  my  rural  contacts  -  they  might  have  a  different  name  but  will  talk  to  them!  -  by  any  means  does  it  have  a  shining  spot  on  it's  head  when  viewed  from  above?  (I  have  to  answer  this  question  to  the  local  rural  contacts  -  please  specify!)
 regards,
 aquascapes
 please  reply  soon

Thank  you  Aquascapes  for  offering  to  help.
I  have  asked  Herman  Meeus  for  some  images  which  I  will  post  as  soon  as  possible.

How  do  I  post  a  picture  to  this  forum?

The  fish  with  the  golden  spot  when  viewed  from  the  top  is  most  probably  Aplocheilus  lineatus  (Striped  Panchax).    I  caught    some  of  these  when  I  was  in  Goa  back  in  1995!

I  exchanged  e-mails  with  Tony  Pinto  a  few  days  ago.    His  collecting  trip  did  not  take  him  to  Gujarat.

 Best  wishes,
 Iggy

I  came  to  the  same  conclusion  -  though  I  have  not  seen  the  fish  yet  but  from  the  village  fishermen  -  they  find  a  lot  of  small  fish  with  glowing  heads    Chuckle
So  I  concluded  it  might  be  Panchax  but  in  your  post  somewhere  I  happen  to  read  the  Killie  family  so  I  just  wanted  to  make  sure!
please  read  the  How  To  section  for  loading  snaps  on  the  site

 Still  trying  to  post  Image.
 However  when  I  went  to:
Upload  image  to  IAH  as  detailed  in  http://indianaquariumhobbyist.com/community/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=685.
I  could  not  find    how  to  do  it.

PostPosted: Fri Jan 06, 2006 7:59 pm Post subject: Aphanius IMAGE Reply with quote

I  have  managed  to  upload  image  of  both  male  and  female  Aphanius  to  the  IAH    iggy  gallery.
I  have  tried  to  download  this  image  to  the  forum  using  instructions  but  my  right  click  on  mouse  does  not  have  "copy  image  location".
Right  click  under  Properties  copied  URL  address  after  highlighting  and  right  clicking  to  copy  and  then  pasted  above.
 Hope  it  works.
If  not,  Aquascape  could  you  kindly  download  Apahanius  image  from  my  iggy  Gallery  for  me  on  to  this  forum  so  that  all  can  see  what  Aphanius  looks  like.
 Thanks,
 Iggy
