 Hi,

My  friend  recently  setup  a  planted  tank.  To  our  horror  we  found  that  the  tank  is  infested  with  leeches  !!!  is  there  any  medication  that  can  kill  the  leeches  without  affecting  the  plants  ?  and  can  administered  directly  into  the  tank.

 Please  suggest

 Thank  you,
 Jithin

Had  some  Corrys  but  have  removed  them  now  so  practically  only  plants  in  there  now.  Want  to  know  when  will  it  be  safe  to  add  the  fishes  again.

Jithin  -  Get  hold  of  some  puffer  fish  and  add  them  to  the  tank  for  couple  of  weeks  which  will  eat  all  the  leeches.

Not  from  practical  experience  Vignesh!  This  was  a  tip  given  by  a  plant  farm  owner  in  Malaysia.

yes  Prem  i  have  also  read  puffer  fish  do  eat  leeches.and  so  do  dwarf  albino  frog.but  both  of  them  eat  shrimps  and  other  invertebrates.

Quarantine,Prevention  always  better  than  cure.so  always  dip  plants  in  p.p  before  they  arrive  in  your  beautiful  tank.

Leeches  in  the  aquarium,  well  faced  this  issue  only  once  long  time  back.  My  fault  pulled  up  some  wild  plants  from  a  local  stream  and  put  it  in  the  aquarium,  and  3  leeches  piggy  backed  on  them.

Not  sure  what  plants  you  have.  What  I  did  was  remove  the  fishes,  mixed  salt  in  the  tank  for  5-6  mins.  and  the  leeches  came  to  the  surface,  scooped  the  3  with  a  net  and  finally  WC.

 regards
 Simanta.

Simanta's  idea  is  perfect  for  leaches.  When  I  used  to  go  for  trek,  where  are  the  routes  are  typically  infested  with  leaches,  we  used  to  carry  salt  in  the  handkerchief  and  applied  whenever  the  leach  catches  on  to  the  leg.  The  leach  just  loosens  the  grip  on  the  leg.  Leaches  also  doesnt  like  tobacco

However,  am  not  sure  how  it  will  work  for  the  plants.

@Raj  no  yar  i  didn't  administer  the  salt  in  the  tank  caugth  the  fishes  which  had  leaches  on  them  and  put  them  in  container  with  salt  water.  the  leeches  would  immidiately  release  their  grip.  then  i  moved  the  fishes  to  a  seperate  quarentine  tank.

Dont  have  anything  exotic  yar  just  have  the  following

 cryptocoryne  wendtii
 echinodorus  amazonicus
 echinodorus  tenellus
 sagittaria  subulata
 Red  Lilly
 and  some
 vallisneria
