Here  is  a  picture  of  Aplocheilus  panchax  that  I  caught  in  a  small  stream  in  Calangute  Goa  in  October  1995.    That  night  there  was  a  rain  storm  and  the  next  morning,  the  stream  was  roaring  with  water  with  no  fish  to  be  seen.    Later  at  Baga  where  the  river  empties  into  the  sea,  I  saw  some  panchax  swimming  in  the  sea  near  the  shore.

 Don't  you  mean  A.  lineatus?

I've  caught  them  in  brackish  water  a  couple  of  times  in  Kerala...  all  sizes  from  fry  to  adult.

 Hello  Aquascapes,
Thank  you  very  much  for  taking  the  time  and  trouble  to  meet  with  the  Faculty  Head  of  the  Dept.  of  Aquatic  Biology  of  Veer  Narmad  University  -  South  Gujarat  tomorrow  Monday.
I  hope  that  the  Professor  will  be  familiar  with  Aphanius  dispar  stoliczkanus  and  where  to  find  it.
I  am  keeping  Herman  Meeus  informed  of  all  developments  although  he  has  also  joined  Indian  Aquarium  Hobbyist  .
I  am  sending  you  a  message  to  your  e-mail  address  to  give  you  further  details  of  the  Aphanius  project  for  you  to  show  to  the  Professor  when  you  meet  her.
Wishing  you  luck  and  thank  you,
 Iggy

 Dear  sir,
I  just  happened  to  meed  Dr.  Ghadia  and  she  has  confirmed  the  fish  profile  she  needs  a  day's  time  to  find  the  address  or  the  name  of  the  person  who  has  done  some  research  work  on  the  fish  -  She'll  get  back  to  me  as  soon  as  she  has  the  info.
 regards,
 aquascapes
P.S.    The  local  fishermen  know  and  identify  the  fish  as  "PIPUDA"  (just  making  sure  I'm  not  leaving  any  loose  ends)  Very Happy

 Hi  all,

Really  excited  to  get  the  info  on  this  fish,  this  just  proves  that  as  an  organisation  if  we  were  to  look  for  a  particular  fish  with  the  right  contacts  we  can  do  so.

This  also  does  mean  that  we  as  a  website  should  have  database  about  the  ornamental  fishes  &  plants  and  then  each  region  can  contribute  on  the  same,  like  "aquascapes"  is  doing  for  "  Aphanius  dispar  stoliczkanus  ".

This  could  be  an  open  database  for  members  to  edit  or  add  information  of  these  fishes  in  the  wild.  (  like  fishbase.org)  and  could  be  used  as  a  reference  point  by  us  members    /  visitors  and  students  or  research  students  as  well  as  govt.  officials.

I  as  a  member  would  be  happy  to  contribute  my  bit  from  my  region  which  is  Delhi  and  would  like  to  propose  a  database  section  for  both  Indian  fishes  and  plants.  Also  we  could  take  help  of  Govt.  officials  /  College  Teachers  /  Prof.  etc  to  build  up  this  data  base.  This  could  also  include  biotype  visits  by  IAH  members.

Admin  /  Moderators  /  Members    what  do  you  think  ?

 I  agree    Thumb Up
we  should  do  something  about  it    Bounce    Bounce
I'm  forwarding  this  thread's  matter  to  Dr.  Ghadia  just  now  as  she  has  also  started  to  take  the  matter  seriosly.
(She  might  even  join  IAH  Cheer  )

We  are  all  ears,  its  just  that  decisions  like  these  might  be  easy  to  take  and  more  difficult  to  implement.
There  are  quite  a  few  of  us  who  are  involved  in  running  IAH  and  all  of  us  need  to  thrash  out  issues  like:
--  Setting  up  a  database  might  involve  further  customization  of  the  PHP  system.
--  Permissions  to  add/modify  information  in  the  database.
 --  Avoiding  copyright  violations.
 --  Ensuring  accuracy  of  information.
--  Ensuring  consistency  in  presentation  and  structure.

Since  we  are  working  on  a  major  upgrade  of  IAH  which  is  currently  being  delayed  by  my  laziness,  please  bear  with  us  and  I  will  ensure  that  it  is  worth  the  wait.
Meanwhile  keep  the  ideas  flowing!  We  are  listening  Very Happy

No,    I  am  sure  all  members  will  contribute  including  the  TADA  members  but  what  we  were  probably  looking  for  is    a  database  which  the  admin  &  the  moderators  will  have  to  provide,  it  will  be  a  database  fed  from  the  backend,  so  it  is  a  software  issue  &  the  site  arch.  issue.

I  am  sure  the  site  admin  will  have  a  solution  for  us.

 Regards

 Sujoy

And  we  are  also  waiting  for  the  write-up  on  your  trip  -  nice  to  know  that  you  are  back  in  action  after  the  tiring  trip!  I  envy  you  for  the  plants  -  sp.  the  ferns  and  pelia  Sad
