Started with Rosy barbs - caught in the river behind our house (Nagpur/Kamptee) circa 1983
Many many tanks and fish later (none of which had CO2/ferts/good substrate and hence plants died within a few weeks)

6 Neon tetra's
2 Red Swords (need to be given/sold away - any takers?)
1 Sunset Platy male

~20 or so Platy babies resulting from baby machine in different stages of growth (more occuring every 4-6 weeks)

You have a seriously overstocked tank, the tank is barely fit enough for one gold fish and you have eight fish and assorted other fish.
Start Another thread and members can giude you on this tank, or you will problems with this tank.

Here’s not just the beginning but also a history…
I’ve always had fresh water tanks only. The hobby for opened up when a friend of my mother gave me a bowl of neon tetras way back in the early 1970’s. Obviously they all died in the shortest possible time. The hobby really started for me in my medical college days when I bought my first 2x1x1 tank. No plants to begin with. Fish list (if I remember correctly, that is):
1. Gouramis – blue, & pearl – pair each
2. Marbled angels – pair
3. Betta – red veil tailed
4. Paradise fish – pair
5. Green corys – pair
Within 6 months I had ich infested angles and made an isolation tank. Just before making that I had seen a friend’s tank that was larger so I also made a 4x2x2 with 8 mm glass and reinforcements. Around the same time another friend was leaving college and palmed off his 3x1.5x1.5 to me. Over the next 3.5 years I kept several fish in these tanks though I’ll be surprised if I remember the list tank wise.
1. Kuhli loaches
2. Yo-yo loaches
3. Clown loaches
4. Common river loaches (don’t know the zoological names) (caught in the wild)
5. Ramirez cichlids
6. Panchax
7. Rosy barbs
8. Tiger barbs
9. Green tiger barbs
10. Cherry barbs
11. Betas
12. Zebra danios
13. Blue danios (river caught)
14. Glass catfish
15. Plecos (3-4 types)
16. Cardinal tetras
17. Neon tetras
18. Widow tetras
19. Dwarf gouramis
20. Blue gouramis
21. Pearl gouramis
22. Three spot gouramis
23. Kissing gouramis (didn’t care for these too much so exchanged them rather soon)
24. Corys – peppered, albino, green
25. Guppies – veil-tailed, lyre-tailed, various others
26. Denisonis (river caught)
27. Hockey-stick tetras (I’m not sure if these are tetras)
28. Serape tetras
29. Red-tailed sharks
30. Red-fin sharks
31. Silver sharks
32. Albino rainbow sharks
33. Tiger (Bala) sharks
34. Otocinclus
35. Mollies (various types)
36. Platys (various types)
37. Swordfish (various types)
38. Angels (various types)
39. Piranhas
40. & Oscars
When my medical studies ended so did my hobby (or so I thought at the time). I sold all the tanks above (plus another 4x1x1.5 I had acquired sometime in-between to interested parties including a hotel and left the town of Manipal and Udipi in mid-1991.
In 2003, the aquarium bug got the better of me again while I just migrated to Wardha, near Nagpur. I was alone in a new location with only newly made friends for company (so I had lots of help ;-)); work was light (so I had lots of time); & there were a couple decent LFS in the town, 1 really good guy who actually gave out valuable tips to newcomers and genuine information as well
So within a month a started a 4x2x2 and a 2x1x1. I handed both these over to a friend who helped me regularly (and with great dedication during my absences, too) when I left the college in 2004. Fish list between these:
1. Emperor tetras
2. Harlequin tetras
3. Buenos Aires tetras
4. Glow light tetras
5. Rummy nose tetras
6. Peacock eels
7. Angels
8. Zebra loaches
9. Yo-yo loaches
10. Clown loaches
11. Corys
12. Tin foil barbs
13. Pearl danios (river caught)
14. Giant danios (river caught)
15. Channas (river caught)
In 2007 my son (who had seen my tank in Wardha) about 8 at the time wanted a tank for his birthday. He promised to “help me” take care of it too. So we planned this would be a rather hi-tech “toy” with Eheim filters, pressurised CO2 cylinders, fertilizer dosing, pre-treated substrates, timers for the lights and fans, etc. etc. This was my first experience with CO2 and external filters and most of this other stuff. All the previous attempts were purely DIY from stands & tanks to filtration and substrate with no CO2 or fertilization!!! I got myself a 60x15x30 (LxDxH inches). Pictures of this tank have been posted on IAH in my earlier posts; I cant seem to post the links here now. My initial fish list:
1. Threadfin rainbows
2. Bosemani rainbows
3. Red rainbows
4. Other assorted juvenile rainbows
5. Otocinclus
6. Chinese algae eaters
7. Yo-yo loaches
8. Zebra loaches
9. Clown loaches
Early on I realized the height was a poor selection and I had a tough time planting and gardening. Also realized the depth was a little too narrow and would have preferred a wider design. This was designed to fit into a space available at home. As my luck would have it we had a CO2 surge/ accident and I lost a lot of fish including some loaches and was completely dejected. I used to travel a lot those days (still do) so my next trip sort of rejuvenated my spirits; I persisted and re-set up the apparatus.
Fish list:
1. Bleeding heart tetras
2. Phantom tetras
3. Cardinal tetras
4. Lemon tetras
5. Congo tetras
6. Copper tetras
7. Red-eye tetras
8. Kuhli loaches
9. White cloud mountain minnows
10. Denisonis
11. Red, blue zebra and leopard danios
12. Upside-down catfish (these guys were tiny 1” when I bought them & grew like crazy with beautiful long fins – we all loved them. (large gentle giants, never ate a single smaller fish)
13. And a disastrous pair of long whiskered catfish (these looked rather small at 1.5-1.75 inches long and would lay icy still, all day long, sometimes on their sides, while they polished off the danios, minnows and copper tetras at night. They were so stuffed they wouldn’t move till I actually touched them, thinking they were dead!!. They looked lovely but they were out within a week!!!)
14. Survivor Otos and algae eaters
15. Survivor loaches from the previous disaster (2 clowns, 4 zebras, 3 yo-yos)
I know I had an overstocked tank but I had 2 Eheim 2217’s and cleaned them out every 2 months alternating the filters every month and tried to change 30-50% water 2-3 times a month. Did not have too many deaths except when there was a CO2 surge (or introduced any random good looking catfish. It’s all a learning process…)
Somewhere along the way I was introduced to IAH and attended the Bangalore conference during Mr. Amano’s visit. This site is an encyclopedia of information and personal experience on the hobby. Thank you all for the on-going ride, help and advice. In May this year the whole family went for a month long holiday abroad. I could not find anyone reliable to look after the tank. So I emptied it out completely after about 2 years of running time and shut it down. Have just been able to make time to re-start it so I’ve been reading IAH forums like a “man on a mission” for ideas and plans. I have also cut my tank height to about 21 inches. The job was done on site so I have relatively sharp top edges. Have covered these with one-sided black rubber tape so no one gets hurt and the roof weight is dampened. Will post my present project as it takes shape with pictures and details.

Hi Guys i have posted pics of my old setup and current setup:
Old Setup - Feb '10 (2 Angels, 2 Pengasius Catfish Shark, 2 Carp) Sorry no old pics of the tank, it is being used as a quarantine tank, currently being cleaned
Current Setup - Apr '11 (Same as above + 2 Plecos + 4 Carps + 3 Goldfish)
Planning on adding some more fish (Angels, corydoras, rainbow cichlids, curviceps, hatchet fish) and plants (anubias, java fern, amazon sword, cabomba, ludwigia)
However for this, I need to remove the plecos, pangasius catfish & carps/goldfish......so lets see how it works out and what all i am finally able to keep.
