nice  trip  pics  of  mangrove  life.  esp.  the  red  crab  in  action.

about  the  skull  -  shows  different  kinds  of  unknown  lives  hidden  in  the  mangroves  which  we  haven't  discovered  it  seems   Smile

   Surprised  for  the  Dolphin  story.

 And  to  continue  -

Later  that  morning,  after  surveying  the  beach,  we  entered  the  mangrove  belt.  Initially  the  periphery  of  the  forest  had  the  typical  pnuematophores  and  secondary  roots.

In  the  above  location,  these  species  were  found  in  abundance.  Seems  to  be  the  typical  habitat  for  them-

Female  fiddler  crab,  the  males  are  notoriously  difficult  to  get  close  to,  i  don't  have  a  decent  shot  yet.

Attached  are  some  Biotope  shots  taken  by  my  friend  Soham.  A  great  many  thanks  to  him.
In  those  locations,  other  than  the  crabs  pictured,  we  found  large  numbers  of  Periopthalmus  and  a  species  of  hermit  crab.

 Thanks  folks,

another  interesting  species  we  found  in  the  mangroves  was  this  semi-arboreal  crab.  We  spotted  one  as  high  as  10  feet  above  the  water  level,  and  this  was  during  high  tide.  Geosesarma  sp.  from  the  looks  of  it  -

Will  post  the  fish  we  caught  in  the  morning.  Smile

Sorry  for  the  hiatus  folks,  got  caught  up  with  some  work.  :)

Coming  back  through  the  casuarina  grove,  we  found  this  little  guy.  Any  thoughts  on  ID?  These  seem  to  be  completely  terrestrial,  as  i  didn't  find  any  on  the  beach  or  anywhere  near  water  neither  day  nor  night.  They  live  in  burrow's  at  the  base  of  the  trees  and  seem  to  be  communal,  we  found  2-3  together  in  some  burrows.

 Forest  crab

 Burrow

We  found  this  old  fellow  gliding  around  in  the  groves  too,  a  lovely  Rat  Snake.  Fairly  7  feet  in  length  and  with  a  nice  pattern  variation,  almost  like  a  checkered  keelback.

I  am  of  relatively  slight  build  Very Happy,  but  for  an  indication  of  size  -

That's  not  a  problem  in  this  area,  located  right  on  the  fringes  of  the  sundarbans  and  far  enough  from  the  buffer  and  core  areas.
The  very  real  and  present  threats  that  are  there,  are  from  Wild  boars  and  drunk  tourists.  There  have  been  attacks  from  wild  boars  quite  often.

Nice  pics  and  it  looks  like  a  very  interestig  place.  Just  wondering  if  any  of  you  ever  been  to  Pichavaram  near  Chidambaram  in  TN.  It  is  one  of  the  biggest  Mangrove  forest  in  the  world.  We  use  to  visit  that  place  whenever  we  visited  our  dad's  village  near  Cuddalore
