your setup looks good..i like the hood and the lights too..
just a word of thought,i think the driftwood would look better if it would be placed vertically..
what plants are you planning to add? |

@ Hrishi -- i will try to get the driftwood vertical but I am concerned with stability of this piece as i dont want it falling down every time i do some maintenance or try to rescue a sick fish or banish a troble making fish..lemme see what i can do.
Hi all,
Thanks for the boquets ....any brickbats? Please note that i will be covering this hardscape with golden color 2-3mm gravel so the dark stones will be further contrasted....more stone available but they are in my temporary tank holding my displaced fauna. The substrate that you see now is 2:1 laterite & Soilrite.
I will include some more pics of the stand...its actually a wooden "dress" if u will - mounted onto my old powder coated M.S stand...got my carpenter to make this alongwith the furniture for our house. The hood lets me slide it back and forth for maintennace. All electricals, filter, CO2 set up etc will be concealed in the stand.
My tentative plant plan is as follows. Please feel free to comment with regard to the type of plant or the number of plants planned. it may look like underplanting but since its not an ADA tank i guess i can take it slow and cut/ replant at will...
Foreground
ELEO PARVULA --> DWARF HAIR GRASS --> 15 nos
Midground
APOnogeton CRISPUS --> RED BULB PLANT--> 2-3 nos
BLYXA JAPONICA --> DWARF BLYXA --> 4 nos
DIDIPLIS DIANDRA--> DIDIPLIS --> 5 nos
HYDROCOTYLE LEUCOCEPHALA--> PENNY WORTH LARGE --> 3 nos
Background
CABOMBA CAROLINIANA --> GREEN CABOMBA --> 5-10 stems
CABOMBA PIAUHYENSIS--> RED CABOMBA--> 5-10 stems
MAYACA FLUVIATILIS --> MAYACA--> 10 stems
ROTALA ROTUNDIFOLIA “RED” --> SMALL MINT (RED) --> 10 stems
ROTALA WALLICHII (RED) --> RED AMBULIA --> 10 stems
VALLISNARIA SPIRALIS --> COMMON VALLISNERIA --> 5 stems
On driftwood
MICRO.PTEROPUS--> 'NARROW LEAF' JAVA FERN --> 1 nos
Java Moss
The intended liquid dosing regime will be with Potassium Nitrate, Sulphate & Phosphate for Macros and Microsol B solution for Micros... water changes once in 10-15 days....I am very bad with weekly WC hence not comitting to that.
Light will be almost 4 WPG as i have 55W X 4 Osram HO PLLs - but give the height from water, etc, etc....i think i shoudl get an effective 3W/ Gallon. The lights will be on a Frontier timer and i will need to vary the timings as per growth of plants.
CO2 is a new thing for me...so will have to fiddle around and see what works best. Will be using a ceramic diffuser.
cheers till the next update... |

due to its inexpensive nature..
on the other hand it involves more hassle..changing the solution every 7-10 days.. |

Bang On! Cause the way you put it seemed like you were recommending DIY CO2 since he is a beginner to using CO2 !
Also DIY CO2 produces inconsistent CO2 generation based on temp of surrounding. Inconsistent CO2 is root cause for lot of algae's including the tough ones like BBA. Unless its a basic level planted tank , Its better to go in for pressurized.
CO2 Kits are a one time investment and not as expenisve as made out to be as well, Only maintenance is CO2 filling once in 2-4 months depending on the cylinder size, On the long run they prove to be more economical and less headache. |

Even I stick to Seetharam.
Initially even I started DIY CO2... Algae Bloommmmmmmmmmm
Then I moved to pressurized setup... Now no more algaesssss |

i can see my "new to CO2..." comment has set up a chain reaction on merits of DIY vs pressurised CO2
what i meant to write was that i was new to pressurised CO2 ...i have been through the DIY stage during my last scape...tried the airstone, diffuser & reactor options...somehow could never get the needed PPM consistently...i use a drop checker for checking co2 level. I am afraid i couldn't even generate CO2 necessary for an algae bloom always had issues with mix needed....frequency of change...tried using 2 bottle "generators" in parallel, etc...
anyway long story short i planted my tank on Friday night after a back breaking 5 hour session...will post the pics asap...got some cell cam pics but not too happy for posting purpose...
now the challenge is in dosing & Water changes.. |

Kamthi,
Can i suggest you one thing?
Try to use something other than the dwarf hair grass, of course, it is very easy to grow and spreads fast enough to cover the foreground, but once it get gets established ,it becomes a mess to maintain it, you will have algae strangled in it, pieces of moss which have dislodged start growing from the grass.it becomes very dirty with time loosing all its shine to algae. if you can comb the whole area of the grass then it would be one of the most beautiful plants to have if not, it becomes a nightmare for maintenance. |

Mad max,
Can you please suggest one nice foreground instead
or 2/3 for me to choose from, i.e. easy on scape and work.
Thank you. |
