 Hello   Smile

I'm  planning  to  make  a  new  6  feet  tank  for  my  house.  The  measurements  of  the  tank  are  as  follows:

 Length  -  72  inches

 Width  -  24  inches

 Height  -  36  inches

It's  going  to  be  a  270  gallon  tank  and  going  to  be  placed  in  a  long  corridor  connecting  the  two  wings  of  my  house.  My  question  is  will  12  mm  glass  be  good  enough  for  making  this  tank?  Please  advice.

 TIA

 Hi  Tia,

The  primary  factors  which  affect  the  thickness  of  the  glass  to  be  used  for  an  aquarium  are:  Length  and  height.

You  need  14mm  at  the  very  least  (with  plenty  of  braces)  for  a  6  ft  long  and  3  ft  tall  tank.  Ideally,  you  need  16mm  glass  (also  with  sufficient  braces.)

Following  are  some  handy  "calculators"  for  this:

 http://www.theaquatools.com/building-your-aquarium

 http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/planasystem/ig/Guide-Charts--Tables--Diagrams/Glass-Thickness-Calculator.htm

 Good  luck,
 Sid

(PS:  12  mm-thick  glass  will  be  pretty  OK  for  a  6x2x2  tank.)

   Thanks  for  the  reply.   Smile

You  mean  the  3  feet  would  be  hard  job  to  keep  up  in  cleaning  the  bottom  of  the  tank  or  your  referring  to  the  stability  of  the  tank?

 @  Sidrock:

   Many  thanks  for  the  detailed  reply.  So  I  guess  I'll  be  settling  for  a  6  X  2  X  2  or  7  X  2  X  2  tank.  I  guess  then  the  12mm  glass  will  suffice  then?

The  3  feet  height  is  proving  to  be  a  tad  risky  I  guess.   Shocked

 Tintin,

 6  X  2  X  2  is  the  max  size  you  can  make  with  12mm  glass.  If  budget  is  a  serious  constraint,  make  a  6  X  2  X  2  with  12  mm.  If  budget  is  not  a  constraint,  you  can  make  a  6  X  2  X  3  with  19mm  glass.  14  or  16mm  glass  is  not  available  in  my  town,  so  I  am  advising  19mm.

7  X  2  X  2  would  be  a  risk  to  take  with  12mm  as  well.  I  would  recommend  19  mm  for  that  too.

See,  this  is  something  that  involves  life.  Life,  I  mean  of  the  children  playing  near  the  tank,  or  if  you  are  nearby  when  it  breaks  and  shatters,  could  mean  serious  risk  to  life.

All  this  speaking  comes  from  personal  experience,  learnt  from  failures  and  burning  lots  of  my  own  money,  time  and  energy.

i  absolutely  agree  with  nytyn.   I  have  experienced  such  an  incident  in  my  house.  Please  do  not  compromise  with  glass  thickness  and  bracings  appropriate  for  your  tank  size.  all  the  best  Thumb Up

 @  nytyn:

Thanks  for  the  info.  This  really  helps.  I  think  I'll  pretty  much  go  with  a  6  X  2  X  2  tanks  for  the  sheer  better  stability  of  the  tank.  I'll  try  and  see  tomorrow  if  14  or  15  mm  glass  is  available  for  the  6  X  2  X  2  tank,  if  not  then  I'll  go  with  12  mm.  The  thing  I'm  worried  about  now  is  will  the  6  X  2  X  2  tank  be  stable  with  12mm  thick  glass,  will  the  glass  sustain  the  pressure  of  the  water?  I'm  kind  of  worried  now.

 Hi  tintin1982,
Are  you  going  to  make  the  tank  as  planted  or  cichlid  tank??
If  you  are  making  it  a  cichlid  tank  then  better  go  for  15mm.

 Hi  Tintin,
Last  time  you  didn't  tell  me  you  are  going  for  a  biggie,  any  ways  all  the  very  best.
If  its  a  planted  one  then  its  gonna  cost  you  a  fortune!!!!

Keep  tan.  cichlids  if  you  can

 @Rocky:
Thanks  man!..  This  is  because  I  have  also  been  considering  going  for  a  180-220  gal  tank.

@TIA:  As  others  have  already  asked:  What  fish  are  you  planning  to  keep  in  this  tank?

Height  and  width  do  not  have  to  be  the  standard  2ftx2ft.  A  planted  set-up  will  benefit  from  a  slightly  tall  tank  and  you  can  potentially  reduce  the  width  (~18").  If  you  plan  to  keep  Arowanas  or  any  "monster  fish",  a  wider  tank  (2.5-3  ft)  will  be  better  and  the  height  can  be  the  same  without  affecting  the  required  glass  thickness.

 Cheers,
 Sid

it  is  the  water  pressure  created  by  the  height  of  water  that  matters,  so  max  height  for  a  12mm  glass  which  is  easily  available  is  2  foot,  but  if  u  are  using  frame  for  the  glass  u  can  increase  the  height  but  it  will  be  difficult  to  clean  the  glass  at  the  bottom, use  polish  ground  edges  to  build  if  its  coarse  ground  the  edges  look  akward  and  also  will  have  a  slight  chance  of  leak

 @  Abhishek
I  have  been  having  this  thought  of  a  big  tank  off  late  so  deciding  to  take  the  plunge!  Going  for  a  big  tank  and  a  nice  computer  upgrade  at  home  being  the  intense  PC  gamer  I  am.  I  tried  to  call  you  yesterday  mate,  couldn't  get  through  due  to  network  jamming.  Will  try  today,  need  to  have  a  word  with  you.   Smile

   @  El  Sid:

Many,  many  thanks  again  for  the  in-depth  help  you  have  provided.  I  plan  on  keeping  Oscars  in  this  tank.  The  other  obsession  I  have  is  with  Barbs  and  I  wanted  to  keep  huge  numbers  of  barbs  in  the  tank,  so  that  once  they  school  about  it'll  look  awesome.  It's  either  going  to  be  Oscars  or  a  huge  number  of  Barbs.
