i  will  be  starting  a  fishless  cylce  soon.  im  based  in  mumbai  (bandra  -  town).  i  need  to  be  able  to  accurately  measure  the  level  of  ammonia/nitrites  (if  possible  nitrates).  can  someone  suggest  a  reasonable  (yet  accurate)  kit?  and  where  to  get  it?  i  dont  want  something  really  expensive.

Thanks  Iqbal....  But  id  prefer  picking  it  up  from  a  store.  Can  anyone  help...  Also  can  anyone  suggest  a  reliable  kit?   does  nessler's  reagent  give  acurate  results  or  just  confirms  presence  of  amonia?

I  use  API  Ammonia  Test  Kit,  I  am  happy  with  it.  It  contains  2  reagents  (both  liquid)  ,  Take  5  ml  in  a  test  tube  which  is  provided,  8  drops  from  each  reagent,  shake  for  30  sec,  let  it  stand  for  5  min,  compare  color  against  test  result  color  coded  strip  for  Freshwater  or  Marine.

Negative  result  @  Nautilus.  Infact  came  away  pissed  off.  The  girl  @  the  counter  was  offering  a  NO2  test  kit,  claiming  it  was  a  test  for  ammonia  (Azoo  NO2,  PH  FE  etc  kits  were   all  they  had).  The  senior  animals  (they  sit  in  a  cage  like  enclosure)  were  least  bothered.  Looks  like  corporate  setups  are  all  they  are  interested  in.  Felt  like  a  visit  to  a  state  bank  of  india  branch.

Another  problem  I'm  having  is  finding  pure  ammonium.  Even  hardware  stores  don't  seem  to  know  what  I'm  saying.  Any  help  in  this  regards?  I  am  almost  feeling  like  a  fishless  cycle  is  a  pain  in  the  @#*€m  I  know  I  can  use  alternate  measures,  but  wanted  to  be  as  accurate  as  possible.  Can  sm1  pls  help.

 Buddy,

I  got  a  tetra  5  in  one  kit  from  Crawford  market,  Aamir  bhais  shop  (the  corner  shop,  alternate  to  Piscies)  for  XXX  bucks.  I  dont  remember  how  many  strips  are  there  in  it,  but  the  cost  of  one  test  comes  to  around  40  bucks  i  think.  I  think  around  20  strips.  Will  go  home  and  check.  It  had  the  tests  for  GH,  KH,  PH,  Nitrates  &  Nitrites.  No  Ammonia  though.  Btw,  this  was  some  time  back.  Not  sure  he  still  stocks  them.

Personally,  i  dont  find  these  very  accurate.  Ive  not  used  anything  else,   yet  the  colors  that  show  on  the  strip  dont  inspire  confidence  as  to  me  having  acheived  the  very  correct  reading.  But  it  should  be  somewhere  close.

I  too  looked  for  ammonia  kits  and  didnt  see  any  in  crawford.  You  dont  even  need  it.  You  could  manage  with  Nitrite  and  Nitrate  kits.  I  use  these  very  rarely  now.

Thanks  Alistair,  but  I  had  already  checked  with  Aamer  Bhai  (Water  World),  he  told  me  to  come  on  Saturday  &  I  doubt  if  he  will  have  the  kits  that  I'm  looking  for.  I  dont  want  test  strips  as  I've  heard  they  are  not  very  reliable.  I'm  getting  increasing  frustrated  with  the  state  of  things  in  Mumbai  (shudder  to  think  of  the  state  in  the  rest  of  the  country).

Im  really  not  sure  if  tests  kits  are  a  necessity.  My  test  kit  has  been  gathering  dust  after  initial  few  months  of  my  first  tank.  Never  used  it  again.

You  can  start  the  process  by  putting  in  small  quantity  of  fish  food  daily  (very  small  quantity).  Run  the  whole  setup  for  3weeks  (with  small  water  changes)  and  your  tank  will  be  ready.  Just  make  sure  to  introduce  few  fishes  in  one  go  and  keep  a  gap  of  around  a  week  between  adding  fishes.

just  my  2paisa  advise.  Im  not  telling  you  not  to  buy  it.  But  think  how  useful  it  might  be  in  the  long  run  and  then  decide.
