Hermits  are  great.  The  clean  up  a  lot  of  gunk.  The  only  disadvantage  would  be  that  if  you  have  precariously  placed  rocks  etc  they  can  be  dislodged  by  the  crab  and  can  fall  and  if  they  hit  the  tank  it  can  break  but  then  to  prevent  that  from  happening  keep  a  small  crab  and  make  your  scaping  crab  friendly.

and  they  do  come  along  with  fancy  calcerous  turbans
   ROFL

Dr.  the  hermit  crabs  are  substrate  shifters  and  will  help  the  aerobic  bio-bacter  in  your  substrate  to  come  in  contact  with  o2  rich  water  and  florish!
They  can  also  be  good  scavengers!  Which  hermits  do  you  want  to  keep?
Some  of  them  come  in  beautiful  colours!
One  more  suggestion  is  to  take  out  the  anemone  from  the  small  tank  unless  you  have  the  hard-ware  to  support  the  anemone's  requirements
 Sorry  for  the  late  answer

I  had  a  crab  once.  Hermit  or  Highwayman  I  have  no  clue.

I  have  a  feeling  that  the  molly  that  was  dissected  in  cross  section  was  an  incident  that  the  crab  had  to  do  with  as  an  accused.  COuld  never  file  a  chargesheet  though.

 Aqualife,
please  go  easy  on  your  caps  lock  -  I  don't  like  shouting!
In  your  holy  observations  -  what  does  a  hermit  crab  release?  what  kind  of  organisms  -  please  specify.
hermit  crabs  don't  have  their  own  shells  and  take-up  any  shell  that  fits  them  and  that  is  not  heavy  for  them  to  carry,  it  is  highly  recommended  to  see  that  the  hermit  change  the  shell  that  it  is  carrying  from  the  wild  so  that  nothing  accept  the  crab  enters  your  tank!

Chuckle  Dont  tell  me  you  cant  find  a  shell!
go  to  your  local  beach  -  collect  one  and  clean  it  properly  if  possible  acid  wash  it  and  rinse  it  with  a  lot  of  running  water  =  BINGO!
Take  your  hermit  out  in  a  tub  with  the  aquarium  water  and  put  the  new  shell  in  the  tub  as-well  -  if  all  goes  well  he  will  switch  to  his  new  home  overnight!
