 New  Glyptothorax  from  Arunachal  Pradesh
Tamang,  L  &  S  Chaudhry,  2011.  Glyptothorax  dikrongensis,  a  new  species  of  catfish  (Teleostei:  Sisoridae)  from  Arunachal  Pradesh,  northeastern  India.  Ichthyological  Research  58:  1–9.

 Abstract:
Glyptothorax  dikrongensis,  a  new  species  of  sisorid  catfish  from  the  Dikrong  River  in  northeastern  India,  is  described.  Glyptothorax  dikrongensis  can  be  differentiated  from  all  congeners,  except  G.  indicus,  G.  rugimentum  and  G.  obliquimaculatus,  by  the  presence  of  an  unculiferous  patch  on  the  posterior  region  of  the  lower  lip,  in  between  the  inner  mandibular-barbel  bases,  and  unculiferous  striae  of  the  thoracic  adhesive  apparatus  extending  anteriorly  onto  the  gular  region.  Glyptothorax  dikrongensis  is  distinguished  from  G.  indicus  by  the  following  combination  of  characters:  equal  distance  between  the  posterior  end  of  the  pectoral-fin  base  and  the  pelvic-fin  origin  and  between  the  pelvic-fin  and  the  anal-fin  origin  (vs.  distance  between  posterior  end  of  pectoral-fin  base  and  pelvic-fin  origin  greater  than  between  pelvic-fin  origin  and  anal-fin  origin),  and  the  pelvic-fin  origin  anterior  to  or  almost  at  a  vertical  through  the  posterior  end  of  the  dorsal-fin  base  (vs.  posterior  to  the  dorsal-fin  base).  Glyptothorax  dikrongensis  is  distinguished  from  G.  rugimentum  in  lacking  vertical  bars  on  the  body  and  caudal  peduncle,  and  having  a  deeper  caudal  peduncle  (8.4–9.2  vs.  6.1–7.6%  SL)  and  a  shorter  dorsal-fin  spine  (10.1–11.1  vs.  15.2–18.6%  SL).  It  is  distinguished  from  G.  obliquimaculatus  in  lacking  dark,  oblique  blotches  on  the  body,  and  in  having  a  shorter  dorsal-fin  spine  (10.1–11.1  vs.  13.4–16.4%  SL).

 Hi,

First  of  all  thank  you  for  the  nice  job  of  updating  and  adding  new  papers.

If  possible,  I  would  be  very  much  obliged  if  anybody  could  upload  papers  on  Labeo,  as  well  as  Schistura.

Internet  is  definitly  not  a  reliable  resource,  unless  you  know  where  to  find  the  papers.

Thank  you  very  much  in  advance

 Ben

Wow,  thanks  for  all  the  reponses.

Balaji,  thanks  a  lot  for  these  papers  will  go  through  them.

Beta:  I  am  just  trying  to  (at  least)  get  an  understanding  of  what  species  are  there  and  then  narrow  it  in.  The  reason  for  this,  is  that  I  keep  catching  and  seeing  all  sorts  of  different  loaches  and  most  of  the  times  am  at  an  utter  loss,  when  it  comes  to  species  identification  (That  even  includes  the  common  species).

To  give  an  example,  I  have  seen  L.  thermalis  from  a  lot  of  different  locations  in  South  India,  yet,  I  am  able  to  single  out  the  ones  from  around  Madikeri,  as  they  have  a  very  unique  pattern  (one  line  of  spots,  as  opposed  to  the  'leopard  pattern').  Same  issue  with  all  those  pencil  fish  species  :-)

So  if  I  can  at  least  get  a  good  idea  of  what  fish  are  there,  it  becomes  easier.  Papers  on  labeo,  because  I  have  absolutely  no  idea  :-)

Thanks  for  your  support  on  my  way  to  enlightenment  :-)

 Cheers
 Benjamin

You  need  to  first  get  a  book  such  as  Dr.  K.  C.  Jayaram's  'Freshwater  Fishes  of  the  Indian  Region'.
 http://www.flipkart.com/freshwater-fishes-indian-region-jayaram-book-819079521x

The  papers  that  come  out  are  usually  new  descriptions,  re-descriptions,  range  extension,  surveys  etc.  They  might  not  really  help  you  in  identification  in  most  cases  on  the  field.
Lepidocephalichthys  sp.  show  a  large  amount  of  variation  in  pattern  so  it  would  be  difficult  to  identify  them  just  going  by  pattern.

Thanks  for  the  advice,  Beta.  I  will  get  that  book  :-)

I  agree  on  the  Lepidocephalichthys,  quite  a  pain  to  identify  those  :-)  I  will  pickle  whatever  I  have  in  casualities  and  pass  it  on  to  you  guys  in  case  you  are  interested  :-)

 Thanks  again
