 Hi  all,

thank  you  for  bringing  such  wonderful  Aqua  knowledge  base  forum.  I  am  not  very  old  in  this  hobby  but  again  though  of  cross  checking  with  you.

 Recently  I  ordered  a  tank  dimension  of  L=48  inch,  H=18  inch  &  W=12  inch,  diameter=  8mm

The  LS  guy  gave  me  pricing  like  this:

 Glass:                    XXXX
 Silicon  +  labor:  XXXX
 Hood  (normal  fibre  one):  XXX
 Base  (normal  fibre  one):  XXX
 Filter:  XXX
 Airpump:  XXX
 Stones:  XXXX
 Plant:  XXX

I  want  you  to  verify  whether  these  pricing  are  ok  or  not?  I  am  in  Delhi  and  not  really  looking  for  high  cost  tank  at  present.  The  total  set  up  cost  is  touching  around  XXXX/-  :O  :O,  please  suggest  me!

Any  idea?  my  2  yrs  old  flowerhorn  needs  a  big  home  asap.

 Thank  you

 Regards,

 San

 Hood  (normal  fibre  one):  xxx
 Base  (normal  fibre  one):  xxx
 Filter:  xxx
 Airpump:  xxx
 Stones:  xxx
 Plant:  xxx

 1.  Looking  at  what  he  is  charging  you,  the  price  of  glass  is  taken  at  about  xx-xx  Rupees/sq  ft.  (Your  tank  is  going  to  need  between  21  to  25  sqft  of  glass  depending  on  bracing/supports)  Ask  the  price  of  8mm  glass  in  some  glass  store..for  comparison.

 2.  Silicon  +  Labor:  This  really  can't  be  compared  across  cities  or  even  stores.  He  can  always  claim  to  be  an  "expert"  and  hence  charge  accordingly.

 3.  Hood  and  Base:  I  didn't  understand  what  you  mean  by  this  (especially  the  "fiber"  base  ??)

 4.  Filter  +  Air-pump:  Depends  on  the  brand  and  out-put.  Check  brand  and  Check  the  output  of  both  Filter  and  air-pump  in  liter/hour.

 5.  "Stones"  are  not  really  necessary.  Just  sand  will  be  good  enough...(unless  you  want  to  go  for  a  "bright"  set-up  for  the  FH).

 6.  Plant:  Are  plants  necessary  in  Flower  Horn  tanks?  (I  don't  think  so..)

Over-all,  you  seem  to  be  over  charged  for  Tank  (Glass+Silicon+Labor)  by  just  a  little  bit  (~xxx  bucks)  by  the  standards  in  my  city  (Bombay).  However,  prices  and  labor  charges  vary  drastically  based  on  your  location,  rapport  with  the  Seller,  quality  of  goods/services  and  several  other  factors...

The  rest  of  the  goods  can  not  be  commented  on  without  knowing  brands  and  output/ratings.

 Good  luck,
 Sid

 Thanks  Umesha  &  Sid.

Sid,  u  r  right  unless  i  know  the  brand  and  features,  we  cant  comment  on  this.  I  will  find  it  out  tonight.

Flowerhorn  does  not  need  plant.  The  prices  were  given  over  phone  and  i  will  definitely  play  with  the  price  once  it's  ready.  I  am  just  bit  upset  with  12''  width.  Just  spoke  with  him...he  has  already  cut  the  glasses!!

 Bad  luck  at  start.

which  city  are  you  in?  I  made  a  tank  recently,  I  got  a  4x2x1.5  tank  in  that  amount  with  10mm  glass  Razz  &  12mm  base..

From  my  experience  following  should  be  the  rate  :
Total  glass  surface  area  =  19sqft  (8mm  is  around  xx-xxrs  saint  gobain  in  Blore)  so  19x55  =   XXXX  +  XXXX  extra  for  polish  /  grinding
Glue  GE2000  is  XXX,  max  u  will  need  2  for  multiple  coating  =  XXX,  I  paid  XXX  as  labor  for  my  tank   =  XXX
Rest  rates  look  okay  to  me  depending  what  make  and  model  is  he  providing.

It  is  an  expensive  hobby  Wink  if  u  want  to  get  seriously  into  it....

Yes,  I  was  going  to  comment  on  12"  width  being  too  small  for  a  FH...  If  the  tank  isn't  already  made,  just  get  him  to  increase  that  to  at  least  18"  or  maybe  24"  (or  anywhere  in  between  18"  and  24").

If  he  is  a  regular  tank-builder  he  can  easily  put  that  12"x48"  (and  two  12"x18")  glass  sheet  to  some  other  use.  Heck,  he  can  use  the  4ft  long  sheet  to  put  braces  in  your  4ft  long  tank..

Even  if  this  re-negotiation  means  you  can't  bring  the  price  down,  I  think  it  will  definitely  be  worth  it!!!!

Check  this  pic  for  braces:  http://www.austinglass.com.au/Braces.jpg

The  48"x12"  sheet  can  be  used  to  give  48"x3"   long  braces  at  the  top  two  and  bottom  two  "long  edges"...  The  18x12  sheets  (if  he  has  cut  them  already)  can  be  used  for  Cross-braces.

The  price  of  braces  is  usually  included  in  the  tank-price..(~xxxx  as  quoted  to  you)..  Don't  let  him  increase  the  total  price  due  to  this.

 Good  luck,
 Sid
