Hi  friends,  this  is  my  first  post  here.   Smile

I  have  a  25  GL  nano  marine  tank  which  I  had  started  a  couple  of  weeks  back.  It  has  an  attached  small  sump  filtration  system  with  Seachem  phosphate  &  nitrate  control  filter  media.  A  LED  light  set  with  14000k  (combined  of  both  blue  and  white)  is  set  on  5  hours  daily.  Apart  from,  it  has  20  kg  of  live  rocks  and  seachem  peal  beach  sand  as  bed.  An  airstone  protein  skimmer  (with  Sander  wood  stone)  and  a  mini  wave  maker  are  set.  For  extra  filtration,  I  have  recently  added  one  EHEIM  2213  filter.

From  the  very  beginning  I  have  been  facing  brown  algae  problem  a  lot,  although  I  never  checked  its  PO4/NO3  level.  A  few  days  back  I  started  checking  them  and  found  that  Phosphate  level  was  very  high  in  the  water  I  used  (normal  underground  water)  and  Nitrate  was  moderate.  Then  on  suggestion  from  someone,  I  started  using  RO  water  and  I  have  noticed  recently  that  the  phosphate  level  is  decreasing.  Although  Nitrate  level  has  hiked  a  bit,  but  it  may  be  due  to  addition  of  some  more  LR.

I  use  Sechem  Reef  Salt  and  keep  the  salinity  level  at  proper  measurement.  Also  weekly  I  use  Reef-Aqua  Marine  Water  Supplement  solution  as  per  direction.

These  are  the  recent  images  of  the  LR.  The  sand  bed  is  dirty  due  to  brown  algae  and  other  dirt  particles.  Water  is  clear.  I  found  algae  is  decreasing  although  not  100%  sure.

Any  suggestion  from  the  photos  attached  is  welcome.  Also  I  request  you  to  let  me  know  how  to  clean  the  dirty  sand  bed  without  changing  it  as  a  whole?  Sad

 Thanks  in  advance.

Continue  running  it  for  a  while  before  adding  your  cleanup  crew,  they  should  take  care  of  the  algae

Nice  Rock  Krish.  Give  it  a  month  or  two  to  get  rid  of  Brown  algae  and  the  green  algae.  Basically,  it  is  new  tank  syndrome.

Airstone  skimmer  is  too  primitive.  Once  you  complete  your  6  week  cycle,  keep  changing  two  buckets  of  water  on  a  weekly  basis.  You  should  be  good.  I  have  my  QT  tank  which  is  of  3*  1.5  *  1   and  it  was  looking  better  than  my  Display  Tank  with  weekly  change  of  water  and  Live  Rock.

 Regards
 Jay

 Thanks  Jay,

I  know  Airstone  skimmer  is  primitive,  but  it  works  fine  except  the  botheration  of  maintaining  water  level.  Can  you  give  some  good  external  hang-on  skimmer  suggestion  for  my  20GL  tank?

And  the  rest  of  the  suggestion  is  welcome.:)

 Regards,

 Krish,

If  you  keep  up  with  the  Water  Changes,  I  think  you  should  be  ok  with  airstone  skimmer.  If  you  have  the  dough,  nothing  like  buying  a  better  one.

Ya  Jay,  I  am  not  upgrading  right  now.  I  shall  first  stand  my  tank  and  let  it  mature.  After  a  couple  of  months,  I  shall  think  of  upgrading.

 Thanks  for  your  concern.

 Regards,

Well  friends,  after  regular  water  change  with  RO  water  and  monitoring,  I  have  been  able  to  control  algae  growth.  The  tank  is  in  nice  condition  now  with  a  clown,  a  damsel  and  an  algae  eater.

 Few  shots  of  it.

 Your  suggestion,  if  any.
