Did you leave the babies with their parents before going? The parents might have eaten them. It is generally adivsed to remove the parents once the fry are free swimming. |

Hi Abhi! Sorry about your convict babies lost. Were the babies with their parents?
Last month I have also lost my jewel chichlid babies. But 10 babies are left in their first breed. I think it is big challenge to grown the babies. |

I guess the exact reason is unknown.I have come up with the following possibilities -
1.The parents might have that fear that others may eat their fries. So in this fear i guess they end up eating their own ones.I dont see this happening in your case since you have no other tank mates with whom the convicts are sharing their tank, unless of course their is too much of disturbance near the tank.
2.You said that you were not there for a few days. The fries might not have had adequate food during that period of time and hence they died.
3.They are no doubt caring parents but only uptil a certain period of time.Once the fries are free swimming, they let them fend for themselves.
4.Many say either one of the parents have to be removed.I dont exactly understand the meaning of it.If the male can eat the fries, so can the female right?
5.The male being the aggresive of the two most probably wanted to breed again. The female resisted and hence he ate the fries instead
I hope i have given a lot of reasons for you to choose from Abhis Da.
Btw, sorry for your loss. But dont worry, they do indeed breed like pigs and you 'll soon have a batch of fries again
Best of luck. |

1> No......no other fish in tank
2> No......someone feed them once a day
3> No......The day I left home they are only 2 days old...so no question of free swimming
4> No......This was their 2nd time breed in same place...1st time also they did the same but no prob...
5> No idea.... |

What a strange behaviour...........
I am really became surprised about their behaviour ...........
Lastly I have arround 15 babies of 1st lot left and they are about 1.5"....now I observed that everyday one of them is dying....I cheked the dead fish.....eye are no more. more or less whole tale is lost, lowerside of the body looks like half eaten....Now only 2 of them are left..........
What the reason !! Any idea !! Why !! |

Hi Abhi! I have also some jewel cichlid fries. Some are growing very fast and some are very small. I think big fries eat small. |

*My own Theory*
I think cichlids may eat their young because they dont have a very develped brain(yet) and they rely on thier genes heavily for lots of things. And their genes may only have the information to protect only the very small fry. This makes them excelent parents, but the Instructions on the genes end here. After the fry grow up into Fish like creatures, The parents dont understand if its a fry or just another small fish(a.k.a food).Hence they let their stomachs decide, and eat the fry.If they had a developed brain, they would realize that their fry have grown into fish and they would protect them too.

One thing I forgot to metion that they already separate from their parents long time back ....when they start feeding their own.....I kept them in a separate tank..........
THAT'S WHY I AM VERY SURPRISE............ |
