 There  should  be  a  ninimum  distance  of  1  foot  between  the  water  and  leds
 And  corals  that  require  less  light  should  be  at  the  bottom  of  tank  if  kept  on  top  it  will  bleach  due  to  excess  light

 Where  did  you  read  this  ?

 A  friend  of  mine  ¬†uses  4x  30watt  LED's  2"  from  the  water  surface,  tank  dept  is  10"  and  Light  to  coral  distance  is  3".

 And  he  also  has  been  running  Maxpect  Fixtures  on  a  12"  and  18"  deep  tank  without  any  bleaching  of  any  corals.

 The  main  reason  why  its  normally  kept  at  12"  from  the  water  surface  is  to  get  a  good  spread  and  prevent  salt  creep.

 I  second  wyelin..

 Abhishek,  the  leds  you  have  are  enough  for  softies  and  some  lps  but  not  enough  if  you  venture  into  more  light  demanding  corals  or  sps..  The  par  value  on  these  donot  seem  to  be  high  enough..

 If  you  happen  to  see  some  Cree  led  or  edisonled  fixtures  like  the  ones  made  by  our  DIY  guru  PK,  you  will  see  the  intensity  of  the  leds  ..  They  are  placed  at  a  height  of  18  "  to  24  "  and  yet  enough  powerful  to  bleach  a  new  acropora  placed  on  the  sand  bed..

 I  agree  with  you
 These  are  not  cree  but  enough  for  what  I  have
 I  will  also  get  some  cree  to  replace  the  existing  leds.

 @freakabhishek

 whether  you  install  CREE  or  Edison,  the  1  foot  distance  is  maintained  not  to  prevent  bleaching  of  corals.

 Even  SPS  dominated  tanks  have  many  acros  &  monti's  placed  at  the  bottom  of  the  tank  with  LED  fixtures.  So  does  it  mean  that  acros  &  montis  are  less  demanding  corals  in  terms  of  light???

 The  imp  thing  is  LED's  are  spread  of  light  rather  than  penetration.  Again  it  depends  on  the  number  of  LED's  you  install.

 The  best  thing  about  LED's  are  that  you  can  add  more  strips  depending  upon  your  tank  size.

 Corals  will  bleach  if  its  not  acclimatized  to  intense  lighting.
