 Hi  guys,

My  4  feet  tank  has  got  infested  with  small  snails.  Don’t  know  where  they  came  from  but  my  guess  is  that  the  snails  came  from  Golden  Sand…

From  what  I  understand  from  optics  available  on  the  forum,  either  you  introduce  1  or  2  Assassin  Snails  or  introduce  Clown  Loach.

It’s  another  problem,  that  I  am  not  getting  either  the  Assassin  Snails  or  Clown  Loach  in  Mumbai.

Would  require  your  advice  on  what’s  the  best  option  for  low  tech  or  semi  planted  tank.  Should  I  go  for  Assassin  Snails  or  Clown  Loach  or  both  or  there  is  another  option  which  I  should  pursue.

 regards
 Anil

 hii  anil,

my  opinion  is  assassin  snail,  they  are  pretty  good  cleaners  and  a  pair  will  clean  off  all  the  snails  in  couple  of  days.  my  experience  with  assassin  snail  is  gr8.i  love  this  tiny  eaters.  i  have  been  keeping  this  snails  since  last  6  months  and  have  never  seen  the  trace  of  the  small  snail.  just  before  few  hours  i  found  out  that  my  snails  have  bread  and  have  few  eggs  scattered.  i  am  not  sure  that  they  are  of  assassins  but  hope  they  hatch.

opinion  for  clownloach,  they  are  very  beautiful  but  are  very  active  they  need  good  swimming  space  and  can  damage  your  delicate  plants  also.  they  also  grow  out  huge.

you  can  try  out  yoyo  loach,  but  they  some  time  loose  the  taste  of  snail.

good  remedy  till  you  didnt  get  the  snail  is  you  can  keep  the  slice  of  cucumber  at  night  and  after  few  hours  you  can  remove  it  when  covered  with  snails.  repeat  this  process  till  you  control  the  snail  population.

i  have  tried  to  use  the  snail  remover  medications  which  are  commercially  available  but  to  my  disappointment  the  snail  population  was  controlled  but  i  also  lost  few  delecate  plants  and  fishes.  avoid  using  it.

If  your  tank  has  shrimps  then  do  not  introduce  loachs...  In  that  case  assasin  snail  is  the  best  option.

 Anil,

Loaches  are  best  for  cleaning  up  snails  if  you  cannot  get  hold  of  Clown  Loaches  try  Yo  Yo  or  Zebra  available  at  Kurla  east.

 Regards

Or  you  can  use  rock  salt  in  good  quantity.  Snails  dies  in  salt  water.  I  have  used  it  before.  After  24  hours  Change  50  water  to  reduce  salinity.

 Deepak,

Would  the  salt  effect  shrimps  and  fishes.  I  am  desperately  trying  to  control  snails  in  one  of  my  tanks  which  breeds  Fire  Red  shrimps  and  Cardinal  Tetras.

Yes  they  effect  the  fish  and  shrimps  but  it  will  eradicate  the  snails.  No  problem  if  its  24  hours.  After  24  hours  change  50  water  thats  good  enough  for  the  fish.  I  have  kept  fish  in  heavy  salt  for  3  days  to  kill  fungal  infection  it  worked.  Now  my  fish  are  fine.  Too  precaution  you  can  keep  your  snails  and  fish  in  hospital  tanks  for  24  hours  too.
 Give  it  a  shot.

 Opps!  My  Bad.
I  meant  for  precaution  transfer  your  fish  and  shrimps  in  hospital  tank  and  add  good  amount  of  rock  salt  in  your  main  tank  to  kill  snails.  That  way  you  can  keep  your  fish  and  shrimps  safe.  Then  you  can  change  50%  water  even  after  2  day  days.
