In nature, fishes's may go weeks on without any food.Fasting definetely improves ones appetite, but frankly speaking, i wouldn't want miy ones to go without food even for a day. |

i am a FH keeper
well fasting a day in a week is good reducing unwanted fats and full utilisation of pontential inside them
what is the size of your FH ??
well remember these kind of food regiem or schedule should be applied from juvilien or yonger stage
FH are good in memory and has some 6th sense ( sometimes) i had a 6 ince ed dragon whic i wanted to apply on the fasting method
so whenever i used to fast it it used to jump banging the hood at certain time
it approximately jumps at the time when i normally used to feed him ....... may be kind of magic
but due to his head banging jumps i dint want him to fast ......... so it is hard to apply fastingschedle on a mature stage of fish

Hi,
My flowerhorn is about 4 inches and it is a red dragon.
I thaught of fasting my flowerhorn one day in a week is because the food that we feed is high in protein which will affect the fish digestive system and also will cause to some diseases if there is any undigested food.............please let me know if my idea is good or should i continue feeding every day..? |

this is the stage of maturity
just fast it one day in a week and see the reactions on that day ..................... i hope the fasting schedule will suit him
you are feeding only chingmix and humpy head .... its good but you can add more varied diet like weakly shrimp / prawn .....i have used chingmix , grandumo, humpy head , ever red , super red syn, starry and VIKING
my best suggestin viking flowerhorn products are really good in all aspects
viking pellet has a bit more quantity of fats ......... protein is just good for increasing kok growth ....... viking provides over all body balance just like chingmix and its also cheap compared to humpy head

I lost my RTC after a year due to a high protein diet which consisted only of liver and nothing else.He was fed everyday.I guess then fasting him for a day would be fine. |

Digging out old posts eh?
Here's my take on fasting and changes in feeding according to the growth stage.
Fasting fish during the growth phase is not recommended by me.
It is wiser to add fibre rich feed to the existing regimen rather than fasting. Hikari offers a wide range of fibre rich feed for cichlids.
Once the flowerhorn reaches around 8 to 10 inches and its growth slows down, the feeding must be marginally reduced in both quantity and frequency.
The alternatives to normal frequency voracious feeding at this stage are:
1) Once/Twice a day feeding 7 days a week.
2) Normal frequency 5 days a week with 48 hour continuous fasting.
3) Normal frequency on alternate days.
( * Normal Frequency = Same frequency as in the growth phase. It varies with every fish and owner. It is what the individual fish is used to. ) |
