if  you  keep  pigeon  blood  or  red  map  or  checkerboard  then  lighting  is  mandatory.otherwise  they  will  have  peppering  on  their  body.

Ask  your  self  this:  can  you  live  with  out  light,  natural  or  artificial,  for  a  prolonged  period  of  time?  The  same  applies  to  your  fish.

 Rajiv,

from  the  looks  of  your  post/s  am  gonna  go  out  on  a  limb  and  say  this  before  i  really  flip  on  you:  LEARN  TO  USE  GOOGLE!  dude  i  mean  come  on!  have  you  even  bothered  doin  the  basic  reading  on  the  fish  you  want?  as  long  as  you  are  expecting  to  be  spoon  fed  by  the  other  hobbyists,  i  dont  see  you  remaining  in  this  hobby  for  a  prolonged  period.  I  understand  you  have  questions  but  have  you  even  made  an  attempt  to  find  out  about  keeping  Discus  or  did  you  just  randomly  wake  up  and  decide  "Ok!  I  wanna  keep  Discus!"  and  came  on  here  and  started  asking  questions?

Any  living  organism  needs  light  for  their  metabolic  activities.  Not  only  PB  based  strains,  even  if  you  are  keeping  any  Turq/  SS  based  strains,  they  also  become  darker  with  stress  bars  prominent  if  kept  in  dark.  But  this  happens  only  for  a  while,  15-20  min  after  switching  on  the  light  they  become  normal.  But  always  go  for  a  low  watt  light  for  your  discus  tank.  They  don't  like  high  lights.
And  Zakk  is  right.  do  some  research  using  google.  You  will  get  lots  of  basic  information.

 Banglaman  don't  misguide  people  pls.

Who  told  you  it's  only  mandatory  for  "pigeon  blood  or  red  map  or  checkerboard"  only

Light  is  always  essential  ...........but  for  discus  it's  recommended  low  wattage......and  it  is  irrespective  of  any  strain.....

And  Parvu  Achintya  is  not  right  at  all.............

 Zakk  you  are  absolutely  right........

Sorry  Abhida.  Actually  I  was  mixing  up  the  lighting  things  with  the  dark  background.  It  was  a  mistake.  I  am  sorry  for  posting  wrong  information.   I  have  edited  and  corrected  the  post.
