@Zakk:  I  have  done  as  much  as  i  can  (reading)  on  amano's  and  relying  on  IAH  as  my  last  option.  Secondly  these  shrimps  are  damm  costly  and  have  them  die  without  a  reason  is  frustrating.

i  know  just  what  you  mean  buddy.  it  can  be  frustrating  to  loose  fish  or  inverts   for  no  good  reason.

Deepak  might  have  a  point.  i  have  heard  my  friends  abroad  complaining  about  mysterious  deaths  of  their  shrimp  while  using  Prime.

Try  using  preconditioned  water  for  your  water  changes.  Am  sure  you  know  what  i  mean  and  do  not  need  to  get  into  the  nittygritty  of  the  steps  involved.

Can  i  ask  why  are  you  adding  Hypo  or  Prime  to  your  tank?

@Zakk:  If  not  in  the  tank  then  where  ????.  For  the  last  three  months  Hypo  before  that  Prime  though  i  still  have  stock  of  it.  Don't  use  prime  now  beacuse  it  bring  my  ammonia,  nitrite,  nitrate  down  to  nill  in  a  matter  of  minutes.  That's  good  in  a  fish  only  tank  but  in  a  planted  tank  would  personally  prefer  the  plants  to  use  them.  Using  Prime  and  then  adding  ferts  to  bring  the  NPK  back  to  levels  aimed  for  just  is  a  invitation  for  algae.

Why  do  you  want  to  resort  to  using  additives?  If  its  the  water  changes  thats  killing  your  shrimp,  logic  states  that  there  is  something  goin  on  with  the  water  conditions  during  the  period  and  up  to  24  hours  later.

Hypo  is  a  DeChlorinator  if  am  not  mistaken  (never  used  em).  My  question  is  why  dont  you  just  age  the  water  the  old  fashioned  way?  It  might  a  lil  more  time  consuming  but  at  the  very  least  you  dont  loose  money  on  stock.  40  gallons  is  roughly  2  buckets  of  water.  Invest  in  1  good  powerhead  that  has  the  capability  to  pump  water  up  from  the  bucket  everytime  you  do  a  water  change.  before  you  do  do  that,  try  aging  the  water  with  just  an  airstone  in  it  and  see  what  happens  when  u  do  your  next  water  change.

 ryel,

thats  exactly  what  am  saying  buddy.  am  old  school.  i  dont  believe  in  chems  or  conditioners.  i  am  of  the  firm  belief  that  we  are  unnecessarily  complicating  a  hobby  that  can  be  done  with  out  the  use  of  most  of  the  chems  out  there.  these  things  do  serve  a  purpose  but  eventually  leads  to  issues.

well  said  bro.  There  is  not  ONE  chemical  we  add  to  the  tank  that  we  are  sure  will  not  play  around  with  the  natural  environment  eventually.  keeping  tanks  should  be  about  the  environment  for  any  true  plant  or  fish  lover,  and  we  all  know  now  about  DDT,  don't  we?  It  was  used  for  over  a  hundred  years  in  this  country.  And  now  we  know  it  is  carcinogenic,  kills  all  manner  of  birds,  plants,  soil  microrganisms,  stays  in  the  food  cylce  years  and  years  after  a  single  use.

@Mortis:  But  surely  not  30  min.  And  even  if  the  shrimps  have  been  affected  because  of  no  dechlor  then  they  would  not  take  like  12  plus  hours  to  die  because  of  that  ????

What  plant  do  you  have?  What  i  meant  by  that  was  u  should  avoid  lucky  bamboo  plants  in  your  tank.  They  are  toxic  I  guess.
And  i  said  30  minutes  for  hypo  because  it  takes  time  time  to  declorinate  the  water  also  by  then  the  water  comes  into  room  tempature.  I  mean  whats  the  hurry.  thats  my  few  cents.
 Give  it  a  shot.

I  dont  know  what  is  causing  the  problem.  I  used  to  use  the  regular  fish  store  dechlorinator  which  is  a  solution  of  hypo  only  and  have  switched  to  Prime  for  the  past  3  months  because  it  neutralizes  heavy  metals  (copper)  Not  seen  any  problems  with  RCS,  CRS,  Tiger  and  Yellow  shrimp  so  far.

 To  all,
I  have  tried  using  aged  water  and  did  a  small  water  change  on  friday  (15%)  however  this  did  not  help  and  shrimps  continue  to  die.

This  is  becoming  a  huge  headache.

 Thank  You,
