 Dear  IAH  members,

I  am  Swami  from  Chennai,  working  for  a  global  logistics  company.

Like  all  of  you,  i  am  a  person  who  wants  to  engage  in  something  creative  and  challenging  rather  than  just  spending  time  everyday  doing  the  routing  home-office-home  stuff.  I  pursue  few  hobbies  through  which  i  keep  myself  engaged  and  enjoy  the  same.

Photography  -  been  doing  this  for  sometime  now  for  my  self  joy  and  have  not  participated  in  any  competition  or  such.  I  have  a  descent  Nikon  gear  comprising  of  Nikon  D-80,  SB600,  18-70mm,  70-300VR,  50mm  Prime,  Tamron  90mm  macro  prime.  I  am  a  member  of  ePhotozine  and  off  late  have  not  been  participating  much
Audio  HIFI  -  a  member  of  HIFIVision  and  have  a  start  up  gear  with  NAD  amp,  CA  CD  player,  Mission  speakers  and  a  DIY  Fostex  Zigmahornett  speaker,  alongwith  my  Yamaha  AVR
Bikes&Car  -  a  member  of  Team-BHP  and  i  own  a  Ford  Fiesta  1.6  petrol  and  also  recently  acquired  a  used  Enfield  Thunderbird
I  like  DIY  and  try  my  hands  on  whatever  is  possible.

Ok,  not  to  bore  you  guys  too  much  -  getting  into  the  topic  -  my  Cichlid  aquarium

I  got  into  this  hobby  small  time  7  years  back  and  had  a  2  1/2  feet  tank  with  some  community  fishes  for  a  couple  of  years  and  when  shifted  to  a  house,  abandoned  due  to  space  issues.  Now,  that  i  have  moved  into  a  bigger  house,  i  started  off  again  with  this.  But,  this  time,  little  more  adventurous  and  carefully  taken  steps  in  building  up  one  by  one  before  finally  setting  it  up  last  week.

After  having  several  thoughts  and  investigating  more  into  forums  like  IAH  and  others,  i  thought,  i  should  get  into  Malawai  Mbuna  Cichlids.  So,  started  working  on  designing  accordingly.

Before  even  shifting  from  my  old  house,  i  started  making  the  3D  styrofoam  background  for  my  48"  x  18"  x  21"  tank.  It  was  great  to  make  that  and  came  out  lovely  (with  few  flaws  offcourse).  I  cemented  it  and  soaked  it  in  water  for  few  days.

Due  to  the  projected  weight  of  the  tank,  i  decided  to  use  a  carpenter  to  design  my  tank  stand.  Made  it  out  of  a  solid  structure  using  3  x  3  padauk  frame  and  then  covered  it  with  plywood  with  inner  shelves  etc.,  A  real  rock  solid  stand  to  take  that  tank

While  there  are  many  pros  and  cons  for  a  UGF,  since  i  had  it  successfuly,  i  decided  to  have  one  this  time  also,  but  supplementing  it  with  a  DIY  wet/dry  filter  which  shall  sit  within  my  tank  hood.  It  came  out  fine,  i  suppose

DIY  hood  -  This  was  not  very  complicated  as  i  had  few  tools  to  get  this  done  and  used  the  carpenter  to  measure  and  cut  the  wood  for  the  requirement  and  fixed  the  lights  etc.,

Ordered  the  tank  with  a  12mm  glass  and  everything  was  in  place.

Setup  -  Used  one  full  can  of  silicone  to  paste  the  background  to  the  glass  and  used  a  40  kgs  gravel  substrate  to  fill  the  bottom.  Added  a  little  of  fake  ground  cover  and  used  just  simple  rocks  which  i  got  from  the  construction  site,  cleaned  them  up  well  and  laid  them  out  in  the  tank.

Left  it  filtering  for  a  couple  of  days  and  daringly  (right  or  wrong  !),  i  introduced  12  x  1"  mbuna  cichlids  to  start  the  cycling.  It  is  now  exactly  1  week  and  i  have  done  3  water  changes  of  15%  during  this  period.  So  far,  they  are  active  and  doing  great  and  has  all  the  qualities  of  a  Malawi.  There  are  few  blue  zebras,  red  zebras  and  a  couple  of  intermediate  ones.

WHILE  I  HAVE  DONE  all  the  above  based  on  my  non-aquarium  skills,  NOW  comes  the  real  part  of  keep  these  guys  peaceful  and  i  thought,  i  should  not  waste  anymore  time  in  registering  myself.  As  i  am  trying  to  learn  about  the  species,  what  with  what  etc.,  etc.,  i  need  specialist  help.

I  thought  i  would  give  a  introduction  on  this  and  will  subsequently  post  pictures  and  ask  all  my  questions  going  forward  and  i  am  sure,  i  can  seek  help  and  assistance  from  all  of  you.

If  it  will  be  of  any  help,  i  will  write  a  breif  description  on  some  of  the  DIY  i  have  done  for  this  tank  as  mentioned  above.

 Have  a  great  weekend.

 Swami

Hello,  sorry  for  not  responding  earlier  as  i  got  tied  up  unfortunately.  Also,  struggling  to  find  a  way  to  get  the  first  picture  on.  So,  here  it  is  and  hope  it  works.  Still  finding  an  easy  way  to  insert  this.

Self  comment  on  the  image  -  it  was  taken  in  a  hurry  as  i  wanted  quickly  to  respond  to  this  thread  and  not  with  any  white  balance.  So  a  reddish  blue  tint  is  visible  which  is  not  the  way  it  looks.  I  will  do  a  proper  photo  shoot  later.

Agreed  that  a  lot  of  more  work  needs  to  go  into  the  decor  to  hide  the  filter  tubes  etc.,  which  i  plan  to  do  after  the  cycling.  Thinking  of  the  best  way  to  do  it.  Let  me  first  share  my  3D  rock  work  with  you  all  and  hope  it  is  of  some  use.

 Material  i  used  :
Thick  styrofoam  (which  i  got  from  the  airport  cargo  complex)
 Regular  1"  thick  styrofoam
 Fevicol
 Toothpicks
 Cement
 Sand
 Some  acryclic  paints

Measured  a  full  length  piece  of  styrofoam  to  form  the  base
Cut  random  pieces  out  of  the  thicker  one  and  gave  it  some  shape
Pasted  them  randomly  on  to  the  base  using  fevicol  and  inserted  toothpicks
While  doing  this,  i  tried  to  take  care  of  getting  as  much  caves  and  crevices  with  some  bland  rock  surfaces  to  look  natural  and  random
 24  hours  drying  time
Cut  the  total  length  into  3  random  pieces  for  easy  handling  and  pasting  later
 Started  Cement  work  :
 First  coat  -  thin
Second  coat  -  thick  with  sand  -  i  used  both  brush  and  my  hand  to  apply  this  to  all  parts
 Third  coat  -  thin
Fourth  coat  -  Slightly  thicker  to  finish  it  off
Sprayed  water  every  4  hours  for  approx  7  days  to  keep  it  wet
At  the  end  it  became  solid  and  good  (still  it  is  thermocol  and  we  need  care)
Applied  PEBEO  acrylic  colours  and  weathered  it
Again  sprayed  water  for  a  couple  of  days
 All  ready

Once  the  tank  was  available  to  me,  cleaned  the  glass  and  use  a  full  silicone  can  liberally  and  quickly  pasted  them.  Left  it  for  a  couple  of  days  and  it  was  strong.  There  were  no  issues  while  adding  water.  I  found  some  places  were  chipped  while  transporting  this  stuff  from  my  old  house  to  my  new  one.  I  will  take  care  of  it  little  later  when  i  do  a  good  water  change.

These  little  cichlids  are  enjoying  each  and  every  bit  of  those  small  caves  and  crevices.  I  tried  to  get  local  rocks  as  close  to  the  background  to  place  it  on  the  substrate.

This  is  just  10  days  old  and  a  long  way  to  go.

Hope  you  like  it.  My  question  hour  is  yet  to  start  and  i  will  come  for  help  once  the  tanks  matures  a  bit.

PLEASE  let  me  know  how  to  insert  a  picture  which  can  be  seen  by  members  once  the  post  is  open.  Not  by  clicking  a  link  etc.,  Thanks  and  have  a  great  day

 Swami

Hi,  i  am  sorry  i  do  not  have  any  pictures  while  making  it.  Actually  it  is  a  time  consuming  process,  but  quite  easy  if  you  have  the  patience.

 Hi,  Welcome  to  IAH
Nice  background  and  good  sized  tank.
In  my  opinion  it  would  look  even  better  if  the  colour  of  substrate  matches  the  background.
Further  UGF  are  not  suitable  in  a  cichlid  tank,  many  of  them  are  very  good  diggers  of  sand  and  do  expose  the  ugf  plate.
Mbuna  are  quiet  territorial  in  nature  and  a  ratio  of  one  male  to  3  female  is  advisable.
Also  they  need  a  fair  amount  of  veg  in  their  diet  to  keep  them  healthy
They  have  been  my  favorite  fish.
This  was  one  of  my  tanks.
