i  have  tried  this  and  made  it  too.  here  is  a  pic:

 works  O.K.
not  excellent,  faced  leaking  problems.  at  one  point  of  time,  i  almost  felt  like  the  container  is  gonna  EXPLODE!!
There  will  be  a  lotta  pressure  inside  it.
When  u  switch  off  the  pump,(or  it  switches  of  by  itself,  like  it  happened  to  me,my  mom  removed  it  ARGHH)  the  water  was  still  flowing  to  the  box,  and  i  had  a  mess  to  clean  up  later.
I  feel  the  PVC  pipe  with  a  cap  works  better,  that  too  for   a  45  gal,  u  can  try  making  one,  if  it  works  out  fine  ,  then  put  2  of  em.

or  u  can  get  a  huge  PAINT  CAN,  and  seal  it  up  with  "J"  Clamps,  i  have  seen  it  on  the  net,  some  guy  making  it!

Try  to  go  for  a  Bottom  up  design  rather  than  a  top  down  design,  it  will  do  more
 efficient  nitirification

Now  this  is  getting  interresting.  So  whats  the  plan  Samir?
Ya  I  forgot  to  tell  u  that  I  have  seen  syphon  pipes  thicker  than  usual  in  motor  parts  shops.  They  are  trasperant  &  bigger  in  diameter.  That  may  come  in  handy.

 Hi

I  am  going  to  make  this  as  told...even  if  it  fail...I  have  nothing  great  to  lose
I  have  cheaked  out  the  costs  of  material(excpt  pump)  and  it  is  under  150

The  problem  with  paint  can  is  its  diameter...too  big  and  less  efficiant

 Samir,

I  would  suggest  you  to  not  make  hole  in  the  lid,  as  it  ll  get  difficult  to  make  lea  proof.  Instead  check  this  design,  hole  on  two  sides.  It  worKs....simply

Just  get  hold  of  a  thicK  rimmed  bottle.
4mm  Rubber  sheet  cut  to  shape.

 The  thing

Pump-  ask  for  water-cooler  pumps.  But  depends  what  volume  of  your  tank  is.  You  ll  get  from  600l/h  onwards.  Just  see  you  have  enough  space  of  filter  media  after  adding  the  pump  in.

 Good  luck.

What  is  that  container  you  used?

ashwin1224  wrote  (View  Post):

Why  would  you  need  a  stronger  pump?
I  guess  you  are  using  a  cooler  pump  from  the  H/W  store.  These  pumps  don't  have  a  liter/hr  rating.  Instead  they  have  height,  i.e.  the  height  you  want  the  water  to  rise.  This  would  depend  on  where  you  keep  the  canister,  not  where  you  place  the  pump.  Also  suppose  ,  if  your  height  comes  to  be  1.5  meter,  get  a  pump  with  more  than  2meter  capacity.  Thats  how  you  can  get  flow  required  for  the  filter.

I  dont  have  any  pump  as  of  now  ...Thanks
