 Hi
Can  anyone  tell  me  what  is  the  right  procedure  to  hand  carry  live  fish  from  outside  India.  I  am  going  to  visit  Turkey  next  month  and  interested  in  freshwater  fishes.

 Thanks,
 Avik

 Hi  Avik!

There  is  no  procedure  to  carry  live  fish  from  abroad.  It  is  not  allowed.  If  you  are  lucky  you  can  get  through  Customs,  but  that  is  the  risk  which  you  have  to  take  or  if  you  get  a  kind  Custom  Officer  who  would  let  you  through   Thumb Up  .

you   need  to  have  an  import  license  &  the  seller  must  give  in  writing  that  the  fishes  are  completely  quarantined,  many  other  procedures  are  involved.  be  ready  to  shell  some  "kharcha-paani"  if  you  are  able  to  negotiate.

The  airport  security  will  not  allow  you  to  hand  carry  any  liquids  of  100ml  or  more.

No  hand  carry,  pack  the  fish  in  the  checked  in  baggage  and  hope  for  the  best.
Don't  try  to  bring  in  a  huge  quantity  of  fish.
About  a  dozen  small  ones  of  1  inch  size  in  multiple  small  bags  packed  in  a  rigid  container  would  be  the  limit.

You  have  large  discus  with  you....trouble.

There  will  be  no  bribes  involved,  it's  either  GO  or  NO  GO.  Bad  luck  Suneal  is  no  longer  at  Mumbai  Airport  Customs  !

I  will  be  checking  through  Kolkata  airport,  and  as  far  previous  experiences  of  the  international  terminal,  in  Kolkata  they  only  ask  "do  you  have  anything"  and  do  not  check.  It  happened  three  times  before.   Chuckle

But  packing  the  fishes  in  checked  in  bags  is  impossible.  Air  India  misplaced  bags  too  often.  I  have  to  be  happy  with  dry  goods.

 Thanks  guys.

 Avik,
It  may  not  be  a  good  idea  even  if  your  experience  is  they  only  ask!  This  is  because,  your  baggage  will  already  be  screened  and  officials  will  know  beforehand  (before  you  are  asked  the  question)  whether  you  have  anything  that  needs  to  be  declared.  So  you  are  better  off  declaring  and  then  hope  that  given  its  in  small  quantity,  you  will  go  hassle  free.  Overall,  its  too  high  a  risk  and  low  gains!

Singapore  is  tropical  fish  friendly,  any  passengers  from  land,  sea  or  air,  are  allowed  to  bring  in  no  more  than  30  pcs  of  tropical  fish  and  in  no  more  than  3  litres  of  water.  Simply  produce  them  to  the  Customs  Officer  at  the  Red  Channel,  and  the  officer  will  let  you  go.

But,  do  not  bring  in  fishes  that  are  under  CITES  control,  then  this  will  be  a  different  story.
