Hello guys,
I have an outdoor tank measuring 4'x5'x3' (lbh) , and have the following fish in it.
-3 ID sharks, (nearly 6-7 inches each)
-1 albino ID, (about 6 inches)
-1 Koi (diamond) (about 5 inches)
-1 black angel (about 4 inches)
- some tetras,
-some zebras,
-some rosy barbs,
-one tinfoil barb (around 5 inches)
-a pair of swordtails
-a pair of plecos ( one about 4 inches, one about 7 inches)
-one golden gourami (about 4 inches)
-two silver gourami (about 3 inches)
generally all fishes have been healthy and active, but fromt he past one week or so, they havent been eating (the gouramis are still eating though). the koi eats too, but it doesnt come up to the surface like it used to, it just eats from the bottom, nipping from plants here and there, the others too seem to be eating the plants these days, cos I have a lot of floating torn leaves, but i cant be sure. today morning though,I found some thread like stuff (green and smelly), floating on the water surface, I've seen thread like stuff (probably poo) but its always on the bottom, and I dont think it was green before, any inferences to be made? Please help guys.

Fish usually slow down during the winter. Koi are active down to 5ºC, platies and swordtails hibernate at temps lower than 15ºC. I don't know how cold it gets in your area–I've only been in Mumbai and Bangalore.
I'd still suggest doing the water change as it always helps the fish.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies I change water every week, around 80% of the water onlky though.. i dont like to remoet he fish to another tank, and again getting them back, as my ID's get very very agitated, and its quite difficult too, to catch them in the tank. it must be the winter, because except for wheat dough they aren't eating anything at all. yeah they make it a point to eat any shoots of water lily, though.

Good to hear about the waterchanges, I'd scale them back to around 50% or less as the really big changes you are doing can be stressful. At that size your ID's are more vegetarian that carnivore but at 10-15 inches they'll consider the rest of your fish to be snackfood. Koi, while beautiful, do get big and can live at least 50yrs. One of my relatives has a pond full and the oldest fish was according to Ojiisan, born in 1909.

^^
How many years do you reckon it might take for the ids to get to that size? the biggest one, about 8 inches is one year old (atleast one year since i got it, and it was about 2 and a half inches then, so overall, i reckon it should be about 1 and a half years not more.). and water changes, cant hep it, atleast for some weeks more, got a dust problem with some road works going on, even though its covered

sireesh, the green thread like algae must be spirogyra. google it and see the images.
how cold does it get in your area? if it is too cold, u should put a heater or two in that tank. it is better tank that doing nothing as the winters approach. the fish will huddle close to it which will prove if they are feeling chilly or not .

I have a heater, though its ntp as powerful as it should be. i have a thermometer, and without the heater it goes to around 74 or 75 fahrenheit at the coldest times. on an average it stays around 78 or so. the3 heater is for 300 ltres, and the tank now has about 600 litres( im filling it to half only, so that itll be warmer), but no, the fishes dont huddle around it, they are otherwise quite normal. and thanks, ill check on spirogyra.

The koi, swordtails, zebra danios, rosy barbs and possibly tetras and plecos should be ok at those temperatures. The gouramis will have problems if the air temperature gets below 70º, angelfish like it warmer as do the rest of the fish.

with the heater it stays at around 79 all the time. is that okay? what should I do? I also wanted to know about the IDs, at what age do they generaly cross a foot in length?

The tank should be ok at that temperature. It depends upon the fish I've had angels survive at 70º but never breed again and some species of tetra and barbs can survive as cold as 40º
In a large tank well fed ID's can grow to at least 2ft long within 3yrs. This big aquarium at Pau Pau Garden in the Ginza has several that are 4ft long and the tank they are in is huge.

mine is a 1200 litre tank. the ids were a little short of 3 inches when they came to me about 14 months ago, and for two months trhey were in a 100 litre tank. from then they are in my 1200, and feed is abundant. the biggest one is still about 8 inches. should i be worrying?
