I  have  made  a  new  30  gallon  freshwater  fish  tank  and  decided  to  keep  mollies  in  it.  Now,  I  read  that  mollies  prefer  brackish  water.  This  keeps  them  stay  more  active  and  healthier  I  guess.  Also  I  came  to  know  they  prefer  hard  water.  So  my  question  is,  how  to  make  the  water  inside  my  new  tank  brackish?  Table  salt  I  guess  will  not  do  the  job  so  should  I  add  marine  salt  instead?  If  so  then  how  much  for  my  30  gallon  tank  after  every  water  change?  Btw,  just  a  little  info,  I  do  add  around  10  drops  of  anti-chlorine  solution  in  the  tanks  after  my  water  changes...  hope  this  will  not  harm  the  mollies.

This  tank  will  be  cycled  with  2  mollies  first  and  then  after  3-4  weeks  I  will  add  more  mollies  in  the  tank.

 TIA   Smile

Mollies  are  generally  found  in  brackish  water.  But  they  can  be  kept  and  be  bred  in  freshwater  too.  They  accept  a  wide  range  of  salinity.  Mollies  can  even  live  in  a  perfect  saltwater  aquarium.  Its  not  necessary  that  the  tank  you  are  planning  for  the  mollies  has  to  be  brackish.

If  you  are  about  to  add  salt,  add  rock  salt  instead  of  table  salt.  It  has  lesser  iodine  content  in  it.

How  much  rock  salt  should  I  add  after  every  water  change?

A  tablespoon  of  rock  salt  should  be  enough.

Mollies  do  well  in  salt,  brackish  or  fresh  water  but,  they  do  best  if  the  water  is  hard.  Just  use  your  regular  water  and  add  some  coral  pieces.  This  works  well  for  me  with  my  P  schenops,  P  petensis  and  my  Gold  Dust  mollies.  Too  well  in  fact–  more  babies  arrived  today.
