Rudie  has  completed  3  months  with  me.  Much  has  happened  within  the  last  month  and  I  have  shared  it  all  with  you  guys.  Still,  here  is  the  scheduled  monthly  update  just  to  keep  up  with  the  tradition.

Rudie  layed  eggs  again  this  afternoon.
I  switched  her  with  Adolf.  Adolf  was  tending  to  the  eggs  with  care  this  time.
In  the  evening,  a  couple  of  patients  and  relatives  visited  my  place.  Disturbed  by  their  presence,  Adolf  started  eating  the  eggs.
By  the  time  I  finished  attending  my  patients  and  decided  to  cover  the  tank,  Adolf  had  eaten  almost  the  entire  batch.  He  calmed  down  once  the  visitors  left.  Now  He  is  guarding  some  5-6  eggs.

But  alls  not  lost  Bro.   Smile   I  recounted  and  it  is  7  eggs  that  still  remain  in  Adolf's  care.  I  haven't  seen  any  fertilization  attempts  from  him  yet,  but  he  still  hangs  by  them.  Lets  try  batting  our  hopes  on  these.   Very Happy

 Hi  Kastor,

You  truly  are  the  FH  expert!  I  had  heard  that  a  female  cichlid  can  lay  eggs  every  2  to  3  weeks  under  ideal  conditions  (and  with  no  fry  from  prior  batches  to  take  care  of).  And  Rudie  is  doing  exactly  that!   :)

Adolf  definitely  sounds  like  he  needs  some  practice  at  being  a  father.  Hopefully,  there  will  be  babies  from  the  eggs  that  he  hasn't  eaten.   Thumb Up

 Thanks,
 Vicky

It  seemed  that  Adolf  didn't  want  to  waste  his  seed  in  fertilizing  such  a  small  quantity  of  eggs.   Sad
Meanwhile,  Rudie  killed  my  10  inch  pleco  and  contaminated  the  water  by  eviscerating  him.   Sad
It  seems  that  fate  had  me  this  time.   Wall Bang
I  was  left  to  clean  up  the  mess,  eggs  included.

While  I  was  cleaning  up  one  side  of  the  tank,  Adolf  and  Rudie  were  temporarily  housed  together.  Adolf  was  very  cool  with  it,  but  Rudie,  who  was  already  pissed  off,  attacked  him  viciously.  But  Adolf  took  her  head-on.  There  was  a  prolonged  lip  locking  session,  after  which,  Rudie  appeared  a  bit  subdued.  Adolf  made  no  attempt  to  attack  her.  But  Rudie  once  again  charged  at  Adolf,  this  time,  heading  for  his  anal  fin.  But  Adolf  countered  her  charge  and  bit  some  scales  off  her  right  cheek.  Shocked  at  this  unexpected  show  of  aggression  from  the  usually  docile  Adolf,  Rudie  hid  behind  the  filter.  This  time  Adolf  chased  her  around  the  tank.  This  was  the  first  time  in  the  last  three  months  that  he  was  the  dominant  one.

In  order  to  prevent  any  further  damage,  I  shifted  Rudie  back  to  her  side  of  the  tank,  from  where,  she  flared  at  Adolf  for  quite  some  time  before  calming  back  to  her  normal  self.

Its  time  for  me  to  go  Pleco-Hunting.  Meanwhile,  you  guys  watch  the  match  highlights.

Now  that  I  have  seen  both  of  them  on  the  same  side  of  the  tank,  it's  easy  to  tell  that  Adolf  is  definitely  bigger  than  Rudie.  Her  anger  is  justified--she  did  her  part,  but  he's  still  a  novice  at  starting  a  family.

Kastor,  have  you  thought  of  placing  a  clay  plate  under  the  divider  and  letting  Adolf  do  his  part  without  getting  a  chance  to  eat  the  eggs?  The  filter  is  on  his  side  of  the  tank,  so  there  definitely  is  a  chance  that  some  of  the  eggs  will  get  fertilized  by  the  sperm  that  flows  to  her  side.

BTW,  can  you  share  some  stats  on  how  long  and  high  they  have  grown  since  you  bought  them?

 Thanks,
 Vicky

As  a  matter  of  fact,  most  of  the  eggs  were  laid  on  a  plate  this  time.  Adolf  ate  them  because  he  was  freaked  out  by  the  strangers  and  followed  his  instinct.

Three  months  back,  when  I  bought  them,
 -  Adolf  was  2"  long
 -  Rudie  was  a  little  less  than  2"  long

 As  of  now,
 -  Adolf  is  well  over  6"  long
 -  Rudie  is  5"  long

I  will  have  to  measure  the  body  depth,  but  Adolf  is  roughly  3"  deep  (without  fins)  while  Rudie  is  roughly  2.25"  deep  (without  fins)
