Guy's...  there  are  piles  and  piles  of  laterite  being  dumped  in  yelahanka  for  filling  of  some  excavtion  done  before,  the  work  is  going  on  pretty  fast,  so  hurry  up  &  help  yourselves..
Directions...  while  going  from  hebbal  flyover  towards  airport  you  will  get  a  Y-junction  where  right  goes  to  airport,  you  take  left  which  goes  towards  yelahanka  police  station,  on  the  way  there  is  a  level  crossing  for  trains..  continue  till  you  see  lots  of  granite  shops  on  left...  you  will  see  lots  of  letarite  with  mud  dumped  there..  there  is  also  a  cross  road  to  left  on  this  stretch..  there  also  you  can  find  the  maaal...
hurry  up  before  they  fill  up  the  excavation....  good  luck!

Yes  100%  safe  for  aquarium,  because  they  have  dug  it  up  freshly  and  the  laterite  is  sill  moist..  which  it  indicates  its  contamination  free,  Its  also  of  very  good  quality  because  its  bright  red  to  brown  in  colour  indicating  good  iron  content,  brought  half  a  gunny  bag  full  for  myself  and  have  put  it  in  a  bucket  of  water  for  cleaning..  Did  you  collect  some...?

Vikas..  Laterite  is  weathered  clay  from  tropical  or  subtropical  areas  burned  by  the  sun  over  thousands  of  years.  Its  porous  appearance  contains  high  levels  of  iron-oxide  (the  more  reddish  –  brown  appearance,  the  more  iron),  contributing  to  a  high  cation  exchange  rate.  i.e.  laterite  attracts  nutrients  and  holds  them  in  “storage”  until  the  plants  can  utilize  them  through  the  root  system.
Laterite  does  not  release  minerals,  but  can  store  nutrients  for  the  plants.  Laterite  for  aquarium  use  is  generally  baked  for  sterilization  purposes.
Laterite  plus  a  bit  of  manure  (5%)  is  an  ideal  lower  layer  up  1  to  2  inches  .  above  this  you  can  use  regular  gravel  of  2  inches..  for  growing  plants.

Hi..  firsts,  the  link  u  have  given  is  not  working..  to  use  it  in  a  working  planted  tank..you  will  have  to  make  it  into  clay  by  mixing  with  water  (  you  can  also  mix  a  small  amout  organic  fertilizer  as  well  with  this)..then  dry  it  till  becomes  very  hard.  then  place  this  very  deep  in  the  substrate..ok

 Nidhi,

The  correct  word  is  slurry  Smile
Mix  this  slurry  with  regular  river  gravel  2-3mm  size.  No  need  to  dry  it.  Add  this  to  the  bottom  most  layer  of  your  substrate  around  2-3  inches  thick.  Above  this  add  another  inch  of  inert  river  gravel.  The  top  layer  is  to  prevent  the  slurry  from  tainting  the  water  when  you  plant  or  uproot.  Please  do  not  add  any  manure  to  the  substrate.

This  is  just  red  soil,  what  you  find  in  Yelahanka  and  surroundings.  But  it  is  as  good  for  the  planted  tanks.  The  true  Laterite  is  found  in  Western  ghats  and  the  coastal  plains.

 Regards,

Thanks   for   correcting....  I  think  mullaji  wats  to  use  laterite  in  his  tank  which  is  already  well  planted  and  running..
Do  have  any  other  solution  for  this.
