 Hi  All,

Finally  I  have  setup  my  marine  tank  (or  begun  rather).

Please  watch  the  video  of  this  initial  setup  in  the  link  below:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6b6tWtdxOH0&feature=youtu.be

I  am  a  novice  and  with  a  lot  of  reading  have  started  this  tank. So  experts  please  comment  on  this  setup

 Details:

 Tank  capacity-49  litre

 Substrate-Coral  Sand  10  kgs

Salt-  Red  Sea  1.5kg  for  45  litre

 Water-Mineral  can  water

 Filter-  Boyu  EF-10  external  cannister

 Lights-Boyu  PFA135

 does  this  setup  look  ok?

is  the  water  movement  created  by  the  spray  bar  enough  or  is  it  too  much?

I  have  also  have  a  5  kg  live  rock  which  i  am  now  keeping  in  a  sperate  bucket  with  saltwater.

When  can  I  introduce  the  live  rock  into  the  tank.

Also  the  live  rock  has  small  grass  liken  green  grow  all  over  it.is  this  normal?

Can  I  add  a  few  mollies  to  fasten  the  nitrogen  cycle  of  the  tank.

This  has  been  running  for  the  past  2  days.

 Experts  advise  please

 Vijay

This  tank  is  going  to  be  difficult  to  maintain.

Further  be  prepared  to  clean  the  canister  once  every  week.
Further  there  is  no  skimmer  so  water  changes  becomes  very  important  and  every  water  change  mean  a  change  in  water  chemistry.
Not  sure  if  the  water  movement  is  enough  from  the  spray  bar  it  really  depends  on  the  force  of  the  water  at  the  bar  only  you  can  determine  that.
Did  you  check  the  water  specs?   post  the  water  specs

When  running  a  nano  setup  i  think  it  always  good  to  have  a  sump  so  that  the  volume  of  water  is  doubled.

The  Dec  11  issue  of  Tropical  Fish  Hobbyist  has  an  article  on  a  7  gal  nano.  It  houses  only  one  clown  anemone  and  it  is  owned  by  a  very  experience  saltwater  hobbyist  who  monitors  the  nano  very  acutely.

 Moreover  it  has  a  sump.

Such  a  small  aquarium  is  inherently  unstable  as  per  the  article.

If  you  want  to  add  mollies  gradually  acclimatise  them  to  salt  or  they  may  die  of  an  osmotic  shock.

All  the  best  ,  do  research  well  and  if  possible  go  for  a  bigger  tank  .  Smile

I  say  its  too  small,  even  i  had  started  a  7  gallon,  got  scared,  and  changed  it  to  a  24  gallon.
OR  u  gotta  be  an  expert  in  marine  keeping.
I  shifted  everything  to  the  new  tank,  and  discarded  the  old  tank.
I  think  u  gotta  do  the  same..  u  cant  keep  many  fish  in  that  too.  Getting  corals  is  difficult  too(atleast  here)  .  ┬áHardly  1  Clown.  Or  1  damsel.  nothing  more.  some  corals..(if  u  get  your  hand  on  em)
 upgrade  the  tank...

U  can  add  the  live  rock.
I  think  small  grass  thing  is  okay,  a  pic  would  be  helpful.
Cant  really  tell  about  the  water  movement,  can  see  some  turbulence  in  the  video..what  is  the  displacement  of  your  Powehead?
Fully  adult  Mollies  are  brackish,  i  also  used  to  them  speeden  up  the  Cycling  process,  u  can  add  a  few  shrimp  in  a  sock  and  hang  it  in  the  Tank,  that  will  rot  and  help  in  cycling  too.

And  btw  u  dont  have  a  Hydrometer  /  Refractometer?
And  how  will  u  moniter  the  tempereture?  Lot  of  things  u  gotta  work  on,  dont  end  up  in  a  disaster  (like  i  did,i  see  that  u  are  headed  towards  it,but  dont   Thumb Down  )

 Best  of  luck!   Thumb Up

 Hi  Nick,

please  see  the  picture  of  the  live  rock  which  i  am  going  to  use  and  give  your  comments.

also  the  water  parameters  measurement  will  be  done  by  my  aquarist  who  lives  nearby

i  will  buy  test  kits  soon  when  adding  the  fish.

please  tell  me  comments  on  live  rock.

Looks  like  some  kind  of  cyno.  Its  normal  in  new  tank.  You  can  maintain  this  tank  pretty  good  as  long  as  you  do  not  over  stock  it  and  do  2X5%  water  changes  per  week.  Take  the  canister  filter  out  and  add  a  power  head  for  water  movement.

 Thanks   Gremlin,

the  only  positive  comment  i  received  for  this  setup.

what  is  the  livestock  limit  for  this  tank

i  am  thinking  of  a  pair  of  clownies

can  you  also  answer  my  other  questions  in  the  post  too?

also  what  you  mean  by  remove  the  filter?

you  mean  remove  the  filter  itself  and  add  only  a  powerhead.?

Yup,  canister  filter  will  only  cause  problem  by  building  up  nitrates  and  PO4  so  its  better  to  run  the  tank  without  it.  Skimmer  will  remove  the  dissolved  organics  by  skimming  before  they  breakdown.  Since  you  don't  have  a  skimmer  you  have  to  do  that  in  the  way  of  water  changes  and  since  your  tank  is  small  its  not  good  to  do  too  much  water  change  at  once  so  you  do  small  frequent  water  changes.

As  for  life  stock,  ya  a  pair  of  clowns  will  be  good.  Just  make  sure  you  don't  feed  too  much.  The  green  stuff  is  probably  some  kind  of  turf  algae,  try  to  get  them  off  with  a  steel  brush  and  add  them  to  the  tank.

DO  NOT  add  molies  to  cycle  the  tank,  just  add  some  food  or  a  piece  of  shrimp  to  start  the  cycle  and  check  ammonia  and  nitrate  and  nitrite.  You  can  read  info  on  cycling  the  tank  on  net.  Wait  atleast  3  to  4  week  to  add  the  fish.

Dont  forget  the  water  changes  and  to  feed  less.  Its  the  key  to  this  tank  with  no  skimmer,  if  you  don't   do  this  your  tank  will  be  overtaken  by  alages  and  you'll  lose  interest.

 Thanks  for  the  advice,

so  if  i  remove  the  cannister  filter  then  what  other  filter  to  use?

and  i  also  find  there  there  is  a  mini  protein  skimmer  in  boyu  (BOYU  201)

shall  i  buy  this  and  fix  this  to  the  tank  so  that  the  skimmer  will  add  value  to  the  tank?

this  moulded  tank  already  came  with  a  top  filter  and  it  was  very  nic, but  i  cut  it  out  and  installed  the  cannister  filter  (waste  of  money?)

i  will  add  the  live  rock  and  throw  in  fish  food.

will  the  adding  of  the  mini  protein  skimmer  make  the  water  changes  less  frequent?

what  is  the  next  filtration  option  now?

 Vijay

for  this  type  of  tank  i  like  water  change  than  protein  skimmer, also  your  tank  wont  have  much  bio  load  so  i  think  u  cant  see  more  skimate  in  it.

Regular  water  change  should  do  the  trick  for  a  small  marine  setup..............  But  from  my  experience  bigger  tank  better  results  and  lower  maintenance......  If  u  dont  have  hydrometer  yet  i  think  it  is  as  necessary  as  the  tank  for  a  marine  setup  (hope  u  have  it)  ........     Wish  u  luck  Thumb Up   Thumb Up   Thumb Up
