 Hi  friends
                Starting  a  new  thread  as  i  donot  know  how  to  change  the  title  of  my  earlier  thread  ....  educate  this  moron  Wink
                Today  I  went  to  the  LFS  and  was  happy  to  see  my  4  footer  in  one  piece  ,  should  be  in  my  home  by  Monday  (positive)  ..

 So  i  was  having  a  casual  chat  about  filters  and  one  of  the  guys  in  there  dropped  this  bomb  -'  The  filter  that  i  am  about  to  buy  ,  an  EHEIM  LIBERTY  200  (HOB)  won't  be  able  to  handle  the  67  gallon  soon  to  be  planted  tank   effectively  '.   The  reason  he  cited  was  algae  issues  .

 Is  that  true  ?

 Please  throw  some  light  on  this  HOB  filter  issue

 Are  there  any  alternatives  ....  I  donot  want  to  spend  shitloads  of  money  on  an  Eheim  2215/2217  atleast  for  the  time  being  (  cons  of  being  unemployed  i  guess  Wink  )

 Regards

 u  dont  need  to  Compulsarily  spend  Loads  of  money  on  filters  ,like  eheim.

 If  i  was  in  your  place,and  i  always  have  money  issues  Razz   i  would  buy  2  Good  HOB's  with  good  turn  over  of  water,  they  are  pretty  cheap.
 if  that  wasnt  enough,  i  would  ve  bought  another.  thats  all.
 OR
 Try  getting  a  top  filter,  and  fix  the  outlet  to  a  spray  bar.

 The  Eheim  2042  has  a  capacity  of  200GpH  .

 Do  you  think  i  should  be  pretty  safe  adding  another  Eheim  2024  ?  Are  algae  outbreaks  due  to  poor  filtration  ?

 Thanks

 The  reason  HOBs  arent  recommended  for  planted  tanks  is  because  they  disturb  the  surface  too  much  and  also  because  they  do  not  ensure  that  flow  is  even  throughout  the  tank.

 You  could  go  with  a  smaller  HOB  for  filtration  capacity  and  a  powerhead  to  ensure  good  circulation

 Oops  !!  The  EHEIM  2042  is  rated  only  for  a  50  gallon  tank  whereas  mine  is  a  67  gallon  ...  so  don't  you  think  it  is  a  bad  idea  going  for  a  smaller  HOB  with  even  lesser  filtration  rate  ???  I  don't  know  about  all  these  filtration  stuff  (  NOVICE  Wink  )  ...  Guys  just  give  your  suggestions..

 Drawbacks  of  surface  agitation  -  Any  ??

 Can  a  couple  EHEIM  2042  atleast  manage  to  reach  the  filtration  potential  of  a  EHEIM  2215  ?  I  feel  this  is  a  better  upgrade  path  in  terms  of  money  ,  atleast

 Thanks  guys

 Is  this  supposed  to  be  a  planted  tank  or  non  planted?
 If  it  is  going  to  be  a  planted  tank  forget  about  HOB,  they  disturb  the  surface  too  much,  the  surface  agitation  drives  out  CO2  which  is  needed  by  plants  to  grow.
 Go  in  for  internal  power  filters,  if  external  filter  are  out  of  range.
 If  the  tank  is  non  planted  then  surface  agitation  is  good  for  the  tank,  you  can  also  mix  one  HOB  with  internal  power  filter.

 This  is  going  to  be  a  planted  tank  and  the  order  for  the  HOB  has  been  placed  last  saturday  .  The  shipment  should  be  comin  to  the  LFS  this  Thursday  and  hopefully  i  can  get  the  HOB  by  Friday  .

 Tank  should  be  here  any  minute  now   Very Happy

 Aren't  there  any  ways  to  reduce  surface  agitation  ,  like  some  DIY  stuff  or  maybe  some  plants  that  can  do  with  very  less  amount  of  CO2  ??

 Note  :  I  can't  afford  a  CO2  setup  and  a  canister  filter  at  the  moment

 Thanks  mate

 Gautham,  Go  for  Sunsun  303B.  It  costs  half  of  eheim  and  works  as  good  as  eheim.  I  am  using  one  on  my  70  gallon  tank  and  it  works  like  a  charm!!

 All  the  best..

 Hi

 HOB  wouldn't  do  the  job  in  a  67  gallon  tank.  Even  two  HOB  filter  wouldn't  give  you  the  desired  filtration.

   I  don't  know  models  of  other  make  but  in  Eheim  2217  would  be  the  best  selection  for  you.  Though  Eheim  is  costly  then  Sunsun  or  JBL   but  again  it  makes  up  with  quality  and  longevity  .

 Since  its  a  planted  tank  ,  i  presume  that  you  will  be  keeping  fishes  also  in  it.  HOB  would  have  enough  filter  media  for  growth  of  beneficial  bacteria  ,  which  are  very  essential  for  health  of  livestock  in  a  planted  tank.

 If  financial  constraints  prevent  you  from  investing  in  Ehiem,  then  purchase  Boyu  ,  Sunsun  or  JBL.  But  external  filter  is  must  for  a  tank  of  67  gallon  size.

 Regards

 Update  :
 The  tank  came  in  one  piece  and  pretty  happy  about  the  size  ;)

 As  for  the  filter  ,  i've  placed  the  order  and  there  is  no  way  it  could  be  cancelled  .  The  primary  thing  is  the  expenses  have  already  shot  up  above  the  roof  (  way  over  my  stipulated  budget  );  nearing  the  5  figure  mark  ;  That  too  without  hood  and  lighting  ,  fishes  ,  plants  Sad

 Even  if  i  keep  the  bioload  low  ,  maybe  like  20  neon  tetras  do  you  guys  think  i  stand  a  chance  to  go  ahead  with  a  HOB  filter

 Another  painful  option  is  dropping  the  whole  idea  of  planted  tank  and  go  ahead  with  a  simple  scape  with  rocks  and  a  school  of  Tiger  Barbs  .  I've  always  had  a  thing  for  the  tiger  barbs  .  What  say  ??

 Regards

 Since  you  are  on  a  tight  budget  I  would  still  stick  to  my  earlier  suggestion  of  a  smaller  capacity  HOB  just  to  provide  enough  filtration  media  and  surface  area  for  your  bacteria  and  another  power  filter  to  provide  you  with  good  flow  in  your  tank  and  also  for  a  little  additional  filtration  media.

 You  could  also  go  with  2-3  lower  flow  rate  internal  power  filters  and  in  one  keep  sponge  and  in  the  others  fill  in  other  filtration  media  such  as  ceramic  rings.

 Just  trying  to  help  you  get  the  best  filtration  setup  for  your  planted  tank  and  budget.

 Gautham,

 And  I  also  have  Liberty  200  and  feel  it  would  be  inadequate  for  a  67gallon  tank.  Another  similar  one  would  be  good.

 If  the  only  possibility  is  going  for  another  HOB,  go  for  it.  I  have  seen  HOB  filters  which  have  bigger  media  compartment  (than  2042).  Go  for  such  a  filter  and  get  good  quality  media.

 Regarding  HOBs  in  planted  tanks,  It  would  depend  on  what  kind  of  plants  you  want  to  have.  Reminds  me  of  a  very  beautiful  tank  at  Dinesh's  place  with  glosso.  It  was  running  a  HOB  with  DIY  co2.  I  am  not  saying  that  HOBs  work  very  well  in  planted  tanks,  but  given  proper  care,  it  should  not  matter  much.  But  definitely  not  advisable  if  you  are  going  for  pressurized  CO2.

 You  might  have  to  compromise  on  few  types  of  plants  which  need  high  co2.

 All  the  best

 Firstly  ,  thanks  for  the  valuable  piece  of  information  .  It  is  an  added  plus  since  you've  got  first  hand  experience  with  the  EHEIM  2042  .

 1.  I  don't  plan  on  going  for  a  pressurised  CO2  ;  atleast  for  now  .  My  wallet  is  already  drained  to  the  core   Sad

 2.  No  DIY  CO2  too  ,  not  experienced  enough  to  handle  the  swings  in  pH  .

 3.  Already  my  choice  of  plants  are  too  narrow  without  pressurized  CO2  .  What  plants  do  you  guys  suggest  ??

 4.  HOB  filter  thats  rated  for  a  50  gallon  tank  -  No  pressurized  CO2  -  Household  tubelights  for  lighting  -  Empty  wallet  -  I'm  in  pretty  deep  shit  right  now

 5.  Gotta  experiment  with  real  hardy  plants  for  atleast  a  month  and  if  they  manage  to  survive  i'll  go  ahead  with  the  planted  setup  .
 The  Painful  Option  :  Else  i'll  strip  down  the  whole  decayed  scape  and  go  for  a  rocky  scape

 6.  Fishes  :  Was  contemplating  about  introducing  a  school  of  Neon  tetras  and  Glowlight  tetras  earlier  .  Now  this  seems  to  be  a  distant  possibility  ,  the  reason  being  tetras  show  their  true  colors  in  a  Planted  setup  and  they'll  live  stress  free  .

 7.  If  it  turns  out  to  be  a  rocky  setup  can  i  add  another  EHEIM  2042  ??

 8.  What  would  be  the  choice  of  fishes  for  a  non  planted  tank  setup  ??

 Thanks

 EDIT  :  How  do  i  edit  the  topic  of  my  thread  ?   Mods  please  help

 Regards
 Gautham

 Edit  the  'subject'  of  your  1st  post  mate.

 Since  you  are  anyway  not  going  for  a  CO2  setup,  then  just  dont  worry  about  CO2  escaping  out.
 Get  your  two  X  2042s.

 They  are  value  for  money  and  there  will  be  people  who  ll  pick  it  up  at  good  second  sales  price  tag.
 Talking  worthiness  as  you  are  concerned  on  your  pockets.

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Well,  I  got  a  better  suggestion  if  you  wanna  vouch.
 Get  a  bottle  of  FLOURISH-EXCEL,  and  your  plants  dont  need  direct  CO2.  Same  time  use  your  two  2042s.
 Inside  budget  -  Simpleton  -  Worth  it!!
 Talking  about  EXCEL  after  following  this  journal
