Smaller discus get accustomed to their environment much faster than their larger counterparts.
As a matter of fact, when I started with discus, adjusting a single adult specimen to a group and getting it started to eat was a real headache. On the other hand, adjusting juveniles to a new tank was smooth provided it was from a good source.
There are few notable observations in this regard>>>
>Firstly smaller discus get a bit nervous if they are housed in a very big tank.
>Secondly the height of the tank placement should be at least at the hip level of the observer. Also note that too much sudden movement near a tank can scare them a lot though normal human traffic is acceptable.
>Thirdly if they are still nervous, reduction of water level and a little bit of non iodised salt helps.
>Fourthly improper water parameters can cause nervousness.Check the TDS of the water (anything above 250 can stress them)
>Do not provide too much hiding places in the tank.
>Reduce the tank lighting to a minimum.
>Sometimes adding a few compatible dither fishes might help.
Try to follow these guidelines and we believe your fishes will fare better on the social front.
