Hey guys,
I am facing issues with high phosphate levels in my reef setup.
This is resulting in brown nuisance algae in my tank n not allowing any corraline algae growth.
Can someone provide some info as how to get this down,Don't have
any reactors as such n water changes ain't helping much.Have been
using tap water for top offs as the phosphates in my tap water is
bare minimum..Please advise as it's really frustrating me.
Note:Will phos reactor, macroalgae or gfo help n if yes where can I get them
as not able to find any info on the web.
Regards

A refugium & bio pellet reactor would be best suited. Both will remove not only phosphate but also nitrate. Phos reactor with GFO will only remove phosphate.

first tell what your po4 level and tell your tank info so that other members can help you well.
my 1st suggestion is have sump it will help you also now i think u may have canister filter it can be source of hight no3 which can give food to alage ,unless it cleaned regularly. |

First try to understand the source of phospates in your tank. It could be feed, water quality..etc .
Stop using tap water even though the phosphate levels are low.

@sid: I don't have one.
@Tausey: Macro algae can be got if your lucky from the beach.Sometimes it washes up on shore. I had been to monori this past sunday there was quite a number at some places. Check this link out "http://www.reefdepot.com.sg/AddProduct.asp?ProdID=366".
Thanks,

Try not using tap water.
You could use rowaphos in a prefilter bag tied to the outlet of your overflow pipe in your sump.
Best get a bio-pellet reactor for long time results. Will help with the nitrate and phosphate problems. |

I'm curious...
How many of you are actually using a bio-pellet reactor?
What skimmer?
What size tank?
How many ml's are you using?
What type of livestock in said tank? |

One important note with a bio pellet reactor is it will totally strip your nitrate and phosphate down where it will be hardly traceable. This might be ok with a fish only tank however in a reef tank there has to be small amounts of both for optimum growth of corals. One way of doing this is by a flow valve on the output and the amount of time water stays in the reactor ie: more time the water stays in a anaerobic environment the more phosphate and nitrate are reduced and the other way round.
Thanks,
Ryel |
