 Hi  Team,
 I  have  set  up  a  new  aquarium  of  size  5ft  x  2ft  x  2.5ft.
I  want  to  set  up  a  planted  aquarium  in  the  same.
Note:  I  live  in  Kanyakumari,  So  I  get  lot  of  plants  from  fresh  water  lakes  is  there  any  natural  wood  that  I  can  collect  instead  of  buying?
1.What  all  precautions  should  I  take?  (  i  am  leaving  this  tank  idle  with  water  for  1  week)
2.What  brand  of  underwater  gravel  filter  should  I  buy?
3.What  filter  shall  be  ideal  for  me?  with  little  cleaning?
4.What  kind  of  shelf  structure  should  I  go  for  placing  the  tank?  may  be  some  figures  to  help  better?
 5.Do  I  need  a  co2  supply?
6.What  lighting  will  be  ideal  1  tube  or  2  tube?  I  keep  them  in  a  place  with  very  little  natural  light?
7.Which  online  store  has  lot  of  collections  inside  India  for  filter/co2/lighting?
8.Is  there  some  testing  meter  which  can  do  all  these  tests  (ammonia/  nitrate/  ph)?

 Thanks  in  advance

 Hi  Chandru,

1.What  all  precautions  should  I  take?  (  i  am  leaving  this  tank  idle  with  water  for  1  week)

You  need  to  cycle  the  tank  before  introducing  any  fishes  into  the  tank.  Please  read  through  "Fish  tank  cycle"  in  Internet  and  you  will  understand  why  the  aquarium  has  to  be  cycled  before  introducing  any  fishes  into  the  tank.

You  need  a  proper  filter  to  cycle  the  tank.

2.What  brand  of  underwater  gravel  filter  should  I  buy?

You  are  not  supposed  to  use  a  undergravel  filter  if  you  are  setting  a  planted  tank.  You  either  have  to  go  for  a  Canister  filter  or  a  internal  filter  for  your  tank.  You  can  read  through  the  advantage  of  using  Canister  filter  in  Internet.

3.What  filter  shall  be  ideal  for  me?  with  little  cleaning?

I  would  suggest  a  canister  filter  for  your  tank.  As  the  tank  size  is  more,  a  canister  filter  would  be  best  suite  for  the  tank.  In  addition  you  are  planning  a  setup  a  planted  tank.  So  a  canister  would  be  great  help.

Even  if  you  are  using  canister,  you  need  to  clean  it  every  4-6  months  or  2  -  3  months  based  on  the  bio-load  of  the  tank.

4.What  kind  of  shelf  structure  should  I  go  for  placing  the  tank?  may  be  some  figures  to  help  better?

A  wooden  shelf  would  be  better.  If  you  are  placing  the  aquarium  in  your  front  room/dining  hall,  a  wooden  shelf  with  a  cabinet/door  would  be  good.  So  that  you  can  place  filter/co2/  etc  inside  the  shelf.

 5.Do  I  need  a  co2  supply?

It  depends  on  the  plants  that  you  plan  to  keep.  You  can  grow  plants  without  CO2  too.  But  it  would  take  considerable  amount  of  time  to  grow  plants.  You  can  go  for  pressurized  co2  setup  for  this  big  tank.  Maintaining  a  DIY  Co2  for  this  huge  tank  would  be  difficult  in  long  run.

6.What  lighting  will  be  ideal  1  tube  or  2  tube?  I  keep  them  in  a  place  with  very  little  natural  light?

For  a  planted  tank,  light  is  an  important  factor  for  the  plant  growth.  Hence  you  need  a  very  good  lighting  for  the  tank.  Based  on  the  plants  that  you  are  planning  to  have  in  the  tank,  you  can  decide  the  wattage  required  for  the  tank.

You  bare  bottom  tank  holds  187  Gallon  of  water.  There  is  a  thumb  rule  normally  people  follow  for  the  lighting.  2.5  Watts  per  gallon.  If  we  follow  the  same,  then  you  need  467Watts  of  light.  Now  you  can  imagine  if  one  or  2  tubes  are  required!!!!!

7.Which  online  store  has  lot  of  collections  inside  India  for  filter/co2/lighting?

 Very  very  few.

8.Is  there  some  testing  meter  which  can  do  all  these  tests  (ammonia/  nitrate/  ph)?

There  are  fresh  water  test  kits  available.  But  I  would  say  that  its  really  not  required  to  buy  those.

Thanks  for  the  quick  response  josyjames.  I  could  see  that  you  live  in  bangalore  and  I  visit  bangalore  frequently.  Is  there  some  store  in  bangalore,  where  I  could  choose  these  products?

What  all  plant  varieties  grow  well  in  Indian  environment?  Is  there  some  good  site  that  has  list  of  plants  in  detail?

Should  I  put  the  lighting  hanging  on  the  roof  or  will  I  get  some  stuff  that  could  be  clamped  on  the  top  of  the  tank?

I  am  beginner,  very  interested  in  setting  this  up.  Thanks  for  spending  time  to  get  me  this  big  response.

 @ram  yes  indeed  Smile

I  did  a  little  bit  of  comparison  on  the  canister  filter  and  narrowed  down  to  two  of  the  below  products:

 http://www.amazon.com/Hagen-A217-Fluval-External-Filter/dp/B005QRDCWA/ref=sr_1_2?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1330152794&sr=1-2

 http://www.amazon.com/Fluval-FX5-External-Canister-Filter/dp/B000I1O2PK/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

please  let  me  know  your  thoughts?

You  get  very  good  filters  like  Ehiem  in  India.  Then  why  should  you  buy  it  online?

I  would  prefer  Ehiem  than  what  you  have  planned  to  buy.
