 Need  suggestions  on  glass  thickness
 Filtration
 Aqua-scape
 Fishes.

Aquarium  Guru,  L  x  B  x  H  is  basic  way  of  writing  I  think  even  a  school  kid  knows  that.  What  here  we  want  is  some  serious  discussion  on  holding  6500  liters  of  water.  Glass  manafactured  in  India  ?,  max  sizes  avilable  ?,  thickness  I  suppose  not  more  than  12mm  is  manafactured  in  India  currently.  15mm  and  19mm  are  imported.

As  mentioned  by  Madan  thickness  for  normal  glass  for  thise  size  would  be  over  63.6mm  which  is  not  pratical  what  are  the  other  possibilites.  I  have  not  understood  "ensure  Bomb  proof  integrity  of  5  Kgs  TNT  exploding  within  10  meters"  as  mentioned  by  Madan.

Nice  to  see  the  pictures  of  works  but  what  we  want  is  one  piece  front  glass  fixed,  all  sides  concrete.  Built  in  the  wall.

The  tanks  at  Orbit  looks  no  wonder  beautiful  to  that  scale  but  gives  a  feeling  of  three  tanks  kept  together.  And  the  fabrication  used  around  I  wonder  weather  it  is  really  required.  I  dont  know  if  it  suits  the  interior.
What  about  tempered  glass  its  strength  is  5  times  more  than  ordinary  glass.  Has  any  body  used  tempered  glass,  does  anybody  know  what  exactly  is  Nikel  Sulphide  Explosion  phenomena  is.  Tempered  glass  shaters.  What  about  laminated  glass.  ?

Glass  is  tensile  in  nature,  it  bends  under  self  load  if  we  hold  it  flat  and  under  pressure.  If  ideal  tensile  strength  is  calculated  with  the  with  the  height  to  length  ration.  Tempered  glass  will  be  suitable  fo  my  tank.

Can  any  one  help  on  bonding  the  glass  to  conceret.

 Reguards,
 Bansal.

Thats  either  a  pond  or  a  wall  to  wall  depending  on  wether  the  height  is  6'  or  2'6".
If  its  a  pond,  why  use  glass?
If  its  a  wall  to  wall  aquarium  -  don't  you  foresee  any  problems  while  cleaning  the  tank?

15  feet  Six  Inches  I  gather  is  the  length.

Which  is  the  height,  2  feet  six  inches  or  6  feet?

What  kind  of  support  are  you  planning  along  the  length.  Is  it  one  single  viewing  pane  or  is  it  multiple  viewing  panes?

The  image  below  is  a  rendered  image  of  an  public  aquarium  project  we  were  assigned.  (  4  x  11  feet  )  44  feet  front  viewing  panes  X  10  feet  height  x  Depth  14  feet.

While  doing  the  strength  calculations  for  this  I  could  never  arrive  at  a  safe  thickness  for  a  front  pane  over  12  feet  length.

Ofcourse  we  had  to  ensure  Bomb  proof  integrity  of  5  Kgs  TNT  exploding  within  10  meters  of  the  glass  pane  and  not  have  the  glass  shatter  to  smithreens.  The  aquarium  being  in  a  public  place  with  viewers  1-2  feet  from  the  front  glass.

God  alone  knows  when  this  project  is  going  to  materialise,  but  is  was  fun  designing  the  whole  thing  for  a  lot  of  us  here  on  IAH.

 Mr.  Bansal,
Probably  there  is  some  mistake  in  the  dimensions.  Building  a  tank  of  that  size  is  not  a  joke.  However  it  is  not  impossible.  In  case  you  need  to  have  the  two  dimentions  15'6"  and  6',  you  will  have  to  reconsider  the  dimention  of  2'6".  One  needs  to  enter  this  tank  for  doing  all  the  work.  Hence  it  will  be  advantageous  to  increase  the  dimention  of  2'6".  Thickness  of  glass  is  not  very  important  consideration  at  this  stage.  Does  it  need  to  be  constructed  entirely  of  glass?  Location  of  the  tank  has  to  be  considered  before  deciding  about  anything  else.

Using  untempered,  normal  float  glass  for  an  aquarium  15.5  feet  length  and  6  feet  height  I  get  a  glass  thickness  of  63.6  mm.  Sad    Surprised  .

If  the  height  is    2.5  feet,  then  the  glass  thickness  is  a  manageable  17.11  mm.

More  info  is  needed  before  anything  further  can  be  discussed.

I  Found  this  piece  of  New  (to  me)  information  on  calculating  glass  thickness  for  aquariums  with  detailed  explanations.

All  the  Knowledge  you  need  for  Building  your  Glass  Aquarium

You  can  download  the  Glass  thickness  calculator  which  is  an  Excel  file  right  at  the  end  of  the  article.

I  guess  what  you  need  to  use  is  Acrylic,  not  glass.

What  we  really  need  to  know  is  whether  it  is  all  glass  or  only  the  front  is  glass?  Secondly  if  only  front  is  glass  then  whether  the  rest  is  civil  work?
