So you now have a new fish tank and you intend to put a background to it. I would like to suggest you use Oyama paper - a simple yet cheap material but it last you year in and out with no maintenance at all once it has been fixed to your fish tank. On top of it, if you don't wish to use it anymore, you can easily peel it off slowly and your tank will look new.
1) Buy the required size of the Oyama paper from your regular fish outlet, some Local Fish shops may have the correct height of Oyama paper for your fish tank. Most hobbyists will choose either black or blue color. You may place this paper as background only or you can always paste all the tank's sides except the front with Oyama paper. The choice is yours.
2) Here are all you require to set it up. All simple accessories within your household reach.
3) Measure your tank's dimension using a measuring tape, use a marker to draw its outline at the Oyama paper and either use a scissor or sharp penknife to cut the paper. I will not cut the exact dimension of the paper for the tank's background, but a few millimeters smaller as excess edges on your tank's background will be an eye sore.
4) Pour a few drops of dish washing liquid into the sprayer that has water in it already. The idea of having this mixture is to enable you to move the paper to your required position on the tank. The adhesive film of the Oyama paper without the mixture will prevent you from doing so once you have pasted it to your fish tank.
5) Before you start spraying the external side of the fish tank with the above mixture, please use a dry cloth to clean the side of your fish tank which you intend to paste the Oyama paper with. Ensure that it is very clean and free from sand or dirt as these will prevent the Oyama paper from being nicely pasted and will cause bubbles. Be liberal when spraying the water to the tank but not be so excessive as too much of the mixture will prolong the drying period and the same time, it must not be too little of the solution as this will prevent you from shifting the paper easily.
6) Peel the Oyama paper which you have measured and cut to size earlier on and paste it to the wet side of the fish tank. Pictures below show how easy to move the Oyama paper while it is still wet.
7) Holding a plastic card of credit card size with your hand as pictured above (I think gold credit card will work better he he!), glide the card on the Oyama paper inch by inch to flatten and remove all bubbles or excess water that may have during this procedure. Ensure that the Oyama paper is properly and neatly placed. Wait for it to dry. Don't worry if you found that there were some excess edges of the Oyama paper at the fish tank. We will handle that problem later on. When you're happy with it, take a rest, have a cuppa or nap or even go to sleep and wake up next morning and continue the next step.
8) So you have taken a good rest, here's the next simple step. Trim all excess edges using a ruler and a sharp penknife

Thanks Djay
I was able to pickup quote from the link
"I think if we painted the tank, we'll have hard time to remove it later on. If we used Oyama, we just need to peel it off slowly. Previously, like you I also painted my tanks, but now I have switched to Oyama.
In Singapore we called it Oyama Paper although in fact it is vinyl. Most LFSs here sell it and it is very common they used it as tanks' background. If you can't find it at your LFSs, perhaps you can check it at motor workshops that sell decals or stickers/signages outlets. Ask them the uncut ones. I believe it will be cheaper. I paid just SIN$2/- for a 2-feet length of the Oyama for the above fish tank (60 x 36cm) " |
