Apologies for not checking the thread earlier...
@Emanuel, Syed and Ospark...Thanks..but this isnt my design to start with, so I cant think of patenting it
Its a universal design used in older generation filters(and some of todays filters too) and it has already been done by a DIY expert Mr.Perikarrupan(from Chennai)long ago, you guys can have a look at his filters, deep down the DIY section and his canister was an inspiration for me to build these.
@Vidyasagar..Cleaning process is simple(check the initial posts in thread for pictures of each part)
Unplug canister
shut off and remove valves, leaving in and outlet pipes on tank
Unscrew the lid bolts(doesnt requires a spanner) and hardly takes a minute
Media is taken out and rinsed with water from the tank
Finer filter pads are discarded for new ones
Pump impeller is cleaned
media is placed back
Water is filled to the top in the canister
Lid is secured with bolts
and the reverse of first 3 steps
@Natbox(dont know your name)...heres the list of items and their prices...
PVC pipe(110mm), 4mm thick - purchased this last time, dont exactly remember the price, might be 30-40/foot Rs80/-
110mm dummy lid - Rs40
Screw lid - Rs 60(now I have removed the threaded part to stick the acrylic sheet)
6mm clear acrylic, got a 16x12" sheet for Rs 120
two tank barbs(1/2") for inlet and outlet - Rs30
One plastic elbow - Rs10
3Xcouplings plastic - Rs25
6Xhose barbs(1/2") - Rs60
2XUnion ball valves - Rs150
One PVC tray(110mm) used under the canister lid has a convex bottom - Rs30
Pump and wires - Rs150
And the most expensive part
12xPP bolts n nuts(kept 6 in spare) - Rs240(20each set)
If we consider only 6, then Rs 120 went on the filter.
3xTeflon tapes(10m), I wasted a lot of these - Rs 30
Araldite - Rs60
PVC cement - Rs20
M-seal - Rs20
Total cost - A lil over a thousand bucks!(without media)
Media costs another 100-150bucks.
The reliability depends on the dedication you put in while building it
And even if something wears out/breaks, I can replace it as the parts are cheap and easy to acquire. I specifically kept this flexibility by not pasting the joints permanently.
Smaller filter is working on my tan 24x7 from July last year without a problem. Once it slipped off my hands and its inlet(tank barb) was cracked. The other day I went out, got the replacement for 20rs and it was a simple fix, its working perfectly eversince.
@Mithun...Cant say the best as I couldnt record the process at every step, it could have helped people further. :(
@Bharadwaz..The acrylic comes in sheets. I took 6mm sheet, marked it and went to a decorative wood workshop, the guys there did a fine job of cutting the sheet as precisely as I required. You can also get an acrylic cutter for 20rs and cut it yourself, its a simple process but requires patience.
Thanks to other for dropping by and appreciating my work :)
I hope I cleared all your doubts, if not, feel free to ask again, I'd be glad to help out further.
