I  am  planning  to  buy  my  first  ever  tank  soon.
It'll  be  for  a  Nature  style  Aquascape  with  slopes  and  mountains.

I'd  like  it  to  have  good  front  to  back  depth  and  low  height  for  the  kind  of  scape  I  am  planning.

I  am  thinking  on  the  lines  of:
 18"  L  x  12"  W  x  12"  H
 18"  L  x  12"  W  x  10"  H
 18"  L  x  10"  W  x  10"  H
 18"  L  x  10"  W  x  12"  H

Any  advice  on  what  are  suitable  dimensions  for  such  a  tank?

Also  what  should  be  the  thickness  of  the  glass,  given  that  I'll  probably  have  heavy  rock  in  it...
Will  the  standard  tanks  found  at  LFS  be  sufficient,  or  do  I  need  to  look  at  anything  in  particular  while  buying  one?

 I  would  choose:  18"  L  x  12"  W  x  12"  H  .  More  width  would  give  you  good  depth  of  the  tank.

 Cool,  thanks!
Was  wondering  the  same,  but  can  I  reduce  the  height  to  10",  will  make  the  tank  look  longer  Smile
Anything  to  consider  while  reducing  tank  height?

Hi  Paganwinter..  What's  your  real  name..
Its  cheaper  If  you  buy  the  ready  made  ones..  if  they  have  with  6mm  glass.
cheaper  if  you  can  make  it  yourself.
Normally  these  will  be  built  with  5mm  glass..
If  they  don't  have  the  tank  with  6mm  glass  then  you  can  ask  them  to  make  one..
 Go  for  the  18x12x12  size..

 Cool  thanks!
No  need  for  thicker  glass  at  bottom  to  support  the  rocks  then?

You  need  12'  height  since  some  of  the  height  will  be  taken  away  by  your  substrate.
For  the  longer  look  you  need,  i  think  you  can  make  the  stand  with  a  little  dip  where  your  tank  properly  fits  into;  to  the  level  of  your  substrate.

Yes,  5-6"  thinkness  of  glass  would  be  ideal.

would  it  be  possible  to  go  for  24"  L  instead  of  18''?  That  would  give  more  space  for  landscape  and  ofcourse  for  fish  too   Cheering

Which  plants  do  you  want  to  have  ?.
A  small  planted  tank  is  never  easy  to  handle.
Further  landscaping  options  with  a  small  tank  are  limited.

Ok,  at  the  risk  of  being  ridiculed  I'll  say  it  -  Going  for  a  Nature  Style  Aquascape  -  Carpet  plants  HC,  Glosso,  DHG  or  whatever  is  willing  to  grow  in  the  above  tank  size  with  ADA  AS  Amazonia  New,  36W  PLL,  DIY  CO2,  minimal  ferts...

I  was  lectured  for  half  an  hour  by  a  guy  at  an  LFS  on  why  I  should  at  least  get  a  3  footer...

Now,  Can  someone  here  give  me  a  good  enough  reason  why  a  planted  tank  needs  to  be  large?!?!?!

 @Srinidhi,
 Yeah!   Clapping

 Hi  Vaidu,

No  one  saying  that  a  planted  tank  needs  to  be  large.........even  in  Kokata  people  have  8"cube  also.

But  any  small  size  tank  (It  may  be  Planted  may  ve  Marine)  maintain  is  bit  tricky  to  maintain  in  different  aspect.  Like  lighting,  limited  scope  to  rescape,  small  room  for  fishes  etc  etc.

This  from  my  small  experience.  I  have  24"x10"x10",  18"x10"x6'(h)  and  one  8"  cube.....

Experts  comments  please.  May  be  I  am  wrong.
